So glad you're reacting to one of the best Dreamworks films. Hopefully you'll consider checking out more of their work since you seemed to really like this film and Megamind. Other great ones to see are the remaining HtTyD films, the Kung Fu Panda trilogy, the first 2 Shrek films, the Prince of Egypt, the Road to El Dorado, and Spirit (2002).

@CLARISS - Girl.. You spent 80% of this "reaction" (if you can even call it that) looking at your food, instead of the screen... LITERALLY. This was one of the most frustrating watching experiences Ive ever, EVER had.

Clariss in the beginning: Leaning back, eating chips, pausing the video and talking over it. Clariss at the end: Edge of the seat, leaning forward, 2 syllable exclamations at most, completely immersed and at the verge of tears. Yup, this is pretty much why I love this movie.

When I think about it, it actually makes sense toothless would understand "I''m sorry" because hiccup is very apologetic for everything and he probably understands now it's when he feels bad for overstepping bounds Man...every single movie in this trilogy gets me, no matter how many times I see them I get a little teary eyed and even more when I can hear and see people getting choked up. Love this franchise so much

Actually, it’s just cause Toothless straight up understands human speech, the concept of weapons, peace offerings, etc, and shows a great range of anthropomorphic emotions and reactions throughout the franchise. Hiccup often just says little offhand comments midfight and Toothless just understands the whole plan from that.
@ILikeCHEEZ9

One thing I love, is that the dragons act like actual animals in the situations they’re in. During the final test, the Monstrous Nightmare first come out, aggressive and roaring, then he goes around the cage shooting fire at the Vikings that put him in there, and only when he realizes that he trapped, does he start to stalk towards Hiccup. If you watch his eyes, you can see he’s calming down, and can see that he’s not attacking hiccup. Once Stoick smashes his hammer on the cage, his eyes go back to slits and he attacks hiccup from being startled.
@ruKUSS_.117
@ruKUSS_.117 Год назад
For me, the ending was where you realize that Hiccup went beyond the call to save people that didn’t approve of him being different. The cherry on top was when he lost his leg that showed that he sacrificed a part of himself for what he loved and cared about, and at a young age as well. Now he and his dragon both are similar mentally and physically, since toothless in returned protected and saved Hiccup with everything of his being.

This trilogy is one of my favorites and I'm excited to see your reactions to the other 2 movies. I love the moment right after Stoick tells Hiccup "You're not my son" you see him pause and stumble because of the weight of saying such a hurtful and profound thing. You also understand that all he's known his entire life is that dragons are bad and he has the entire village to think of as well. He is just trying to do what he thinks is right, even if we know there is another way, in that moment he can't see it yet. It makes the moment he does see there's another way, saves Toothless from drowning, and tells Hiccup he's proud of him, so much more powerful. ❤❤❤

You mentioned that we've seen this story over and over again, but in this movie it is SO well done. I think primarily because the Dad is so loving. Yeah, he's this big STRONK manly Viking, but you see him struggling to connect with his son and really wanting the best for him. In the standard version of this story, the parents/dad is always like "Well if my son would only try harder" or "he needs X to make him a real man" and while Hiccup feels that pressure from society and especially his peers, I don't feel like his dad lays that on him. Sort of indirectly by being a little disappointed, but also I feel his dad understands that they aren't the same and that Hiccup should find some other way to be a part of the community. It doesn't feel like there's any direct shame in that just that the dragon fighter is glorified and his dad's reputation has made Hiccup have his own expectations. And I find that really refreshing that his dad is so loving about it. He has that moment of weakness when Hiccup tries to explain, but then even on the ship he saves Toothless for no other reason than his son risked his life for the dragon so it must be worth saving. That to me, because you know HE doesn't trust the dragons but he trusts his son's judgment, shows me what a good father he is. So I think that's why it feels so well done. His father is human, and has his moments of screwing up, but in general is loving and caring and doing his best to connect with his son and that to me shines through the whole movie and gives it a different feeling than the "usual" way this story is told. :D

Clariss it's SO SATISFYING to see you slowly get more and more engrossed in the movie. You were just snacking and casual and then you were leaning forward crying happy tears by the end (I was too, I love this movie!). Such a genuine reaction to this and it's honestly what I was expecting. The score is incredible, the story is simple and told well. The characters are not boring at all, and the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless is so much fun. This movie is amazing. What a great reaction, and it's nice to see you enjoyed it. This film (and the sequels) are indeed a wonderful story about making progress through the struggle of being different. As a disabled person I also loved how this franchise actually incorporates disability in the story, without making it about disability explicitly. Now, I not you don't really do music video reactions so if you don't want to do a reaction video I understand but please check out 'To Where No One Goes' covered by Peter Hollens. Great job on your reaction Clariss! I really love this movie and if anyone is interested and is also a huge fan of Pokémon and is looking for a really good fanfiction to read I have been reading this really great crossover fanfiction that crosses over Pokémon and How To Train Your Dragon! Its actually part of an ongoing series called The Trials of Sarah but there is a special book that features the main character Sarah, her godfather Tsukumaro, and all of her Pokémon and Dragons coming together to help Hiccup and Zenna (an OC that belongs to someone else-but the author was given permission to use) and some really cool Fakemon including an Eeveeloution Fakemon that happens to be a dragon type (again the author was given permission to use these Fakemon) but it takes place during the first How To Train Your Dragon Movie and how Sarah, Tusukumaro, all of Sarah’s Pokémon and Dragons and Hiccup and Zenna have to come together to help bring peace between Vikings and Dragons!

What I like about this movie is that it doesn't paint Stoic as some sort of villain, Stoic had every reason to hate Dragons, in his mind they hurt his kid and killed his wife and Stoic WAS ashamed for Hiccup because he wasn't able to kill dragons and killing dragons in this society is far more important then sports, they come in, burn down the village and steal their food, granted they did so under the influence of a Queen, but no one knew this until Hiccup discovered it. It also shows that Hiccup tried too hard being somebody he is not and it also makes sense why he would be that way, it is because it was instilled into him from a very young age that dragons are evil, heck the Dragon Manual shows you how the vikings see dragons and many of them are vicious and dangerous, Hiccup learns this in the show Dragonriders, not all dragons are nice or misunderstood, there are some vicious ones out there. Hiccup was just lucky that the dragon he started trusting wasn't vicious. But yeah, this movie was great, there are some that argue that the red death is a weak villain and to them I say, this wasn't about the villain, it was purely about Hiccups Journey into adulthood and becoming accepted by accepting who he is and walking his own path, not the path that everyone expected him to follow. The Red Death is just there for Hiccup to show how much he has grown as a character and to show that Stoic, for all his flaws, was able to see that and finally told his son that he was proud of him, not because of what he expected him to be, but because he became better then he could have ever expected. And that isn't even mentioning how much character they gave to a roll that doesn't speak a single word the entire movie. Toothless is just the most adorable thing ever.

Phew, so watching this movie brings me BACK. I watched it in my first semester of college, and I was inspired to write an essay about how the film reflected the extremely conservative, Islamophobic, homophobic world I was raised in, and it essentially said to me, "Yeah, they say these things like they're true. But you being closer to right, to love? You're allowed to talk about it there. They're gonna fight you on it, but that doesn't matter, because someday, people will hear you and they will agree, and anyone who tells you that any other person shouldn't have the right to live because they were born in a certain manner they don't like? They're not going to win, because the people heard *you* and that's shit that's worthy of being believed."

I only saw this movie in the summer. Became a favorite. I felt really bad for Hiccup the whole time and really had a hard time forgiving Stoick, even after he learned. Of course Hiccup ends up connecting better with the other mistreated creature on the island. The villagers wanted nothing to do with him and Toothless helps guide him to be the best version of himself. Berk lucked out he was the forgiving type. Stoick really had very little interest in being around his son or even attempting to understand or listen until he thought his son was good at what he does. I mean I get that from the other kids, but I also know they take cues from adults. IMO Stoick needed to learn more than Hiccup did.

Toothless was accepting death, it had nothing to do with him not being scared of hiccup. He was tied up and accepted that he was about to be killed. Idk how reactors keep mistaking that for toothless not being scared, or not taking him seriously. He was most definitely scared, because to him hiccup was just like any other human a killer. He was injured and tied up, how else would toothless have reacted other then closing his eyes and laying there waiting to be killed. Adding that toothless never saw hiccup as weak. The entire bonding montage, as menacing as toothless looked, he was afraid of hiccup and kept his distance.

So... I know that she doesn't say it. I have seen the closed captioning, I have spoken with people who hear it properly. But when Astrid is ranting, I have never heard her say "Bucket". Not hard too guess what I always hear though...

Love this movie and franchise, IMO, hands down the best animated trilogy by far!!! With the next one, there is an adorably cute, live action promo, "Kit Harington and Toothless' Lost Audition Tapes" that you should definitely watch. Kung Fu Panda is great and lots of fun, but Po in particular never really shows much in the way of character development or growth, he just levels up skills. I also feel that while it works really well for the first 2 movies, by the 3rd, having all 3 movies centered around concepts of identity, just gets to be too repetitive. HTTYD, on the other hand is all about mixing it up and really emphasizes, the amount of character development and growth throughout.

Tbh, I think HTTYD is more thought out than Kung Fu Panda. Or at least better written since Kung Fu Panda 3 is one of its weaker stuff cause from the 1st to the 3rd movie, it's pretty fucking solid. Like I haven't really heard anything bad about any in the levels as Kung Fu Panda 3.
