Rabbi Griffin provides a dynamic answer to one of the most asked theological questions! What does the vision of the sheet mean in Acts 10? Does Acts 10 teach us that we can eat whatever we want? Is it even about food? Did “Jesus”make “all foods clean”? Did Acts 10 eliminate the kosher laws and therefore erase two whole chapters of the Bible?
This is a clip from a special class by Rabbi Mordecai Griffin on the basics of Judaism. In this clip, a member of the class asked Rabbi to explain how we can remain kosher in light of Acts 10. Rabbi Griffin takes the opportunity to explain the vision of sheet and the meaning behind Pete's meeting with Cornelius.
A teaching by Rabbi Mordecai Aaron Griffin.

If people would read the whole chapter, rather than just a few verses, they would not be confused about the meaning. The problem is folks let others read the Bible for them. Great video teaching!

But The Bible says Peter was hungry. God will test us, but he doesn't temp us and that's what's being implied when applying your explanation to that scriptural specification. I'm not denying that Peter was initially perplexed by his vision, not having full understanding of what God meant until he entered Cornelius's house. But, I'd be wary of teaching that God's gifts in visions are tests in which you pass by resisting temptation.

HaShem may not test us directly but He certainly allows us to be tested. See the story of Job. In the case of Peter, however, it was more of an illustration. He used his hunger in order to initiate a conversation about saving the unclean gentiles.

He was talking about eating bread with unwashed hands. Not about eating forbidden foods. Eating pork and so forth is a sin.

@@LapidJudaism You are wrong sir. Yeshua always had deeper meanings than your surface interpretation. It seems to this Christ follower that you are a modern day Judaicer. Christ's church rebuked your types as well as the gnostics in the 1st to 3rd centuries. The only sins are the violations of the moral laws (10 commandments as expounded upon by Yeshua in His sermon on the mount). The New Covenant negates your re-insertion of the burden of Jewish dictates regarding diet and circumcision. And please do a video explaining how you throw out the writings of Paul, Luke (Paul's Gentile Doctor) and Acts to sell your Lapid-ism.

Romans 14:20 - "Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats."
@LapidJudaism
@LapidJudaism 2 года назад
Paul is not talking in his letter about eating non kosher food such as swine. He is talking about permitted foods (permitted by HaShem). Moreover, what one can and can not eat comes from the command of G-d. Therefore it is the work of G-d. So, obeying G-d’s Word does NOT “destroy the work of G-d”. That would be ridiculous. Finally, neither Paul, nor any man, has the authority to change the Word of HaShem. Please contact us if you would like further help with this passage.

You stumble because you nullify the Word of God by the words of a man (Paul’s letters).

During Peter's vision the Lord tells him, " Call thou not unclean that which God hath cleaned" I am convinced that not only is God letting Peter know that He is opening up salvation to the gentiles as well as jews but He is speaking about Peter's soon meeting with Cornelius and his guests specifically. Cornelius' messengers are just arriving at Peters' house. When that Lord said, ".. what God hath cleansed" He is speaking in the future and past sense. I believe that the reason that Cornelius and his guests recieved the Holy Spirit before water baptism is because they had already been cleansed having been baptized by John the Baptist whose baptism was sufficient for a time to spirituallyl cleanse a soul enough to where they could then recieve the Holy Spirit.
@LapidJudaism

There is no indication that Cornelius and his family had visited John the Baptist. Please refer to the video Acts 10 Explained on this channel for clear understanding of this passage and what it is teaching.

@@LapidJudaism Thanks for your reply. One of the reasons that I came to the conclusion that Cornelius and his guests had been baptized with the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins by John the Baptist is that repentance and baptism for the remission of sins is the N.T. type of the O.T. cleansing of the temple in preparation for the entrance of the Spirit of God. In the O T. the cleansing was accomplished with water and blood. During the N.T. water baptism the Holy Spirit circumcizes our conscience, removing the guilt from past sins, and restoring to it its original childlike sensitivity to sin. The shedding of the Lords blood at Calvary made John's baptism effective for all who had been baptized of him. Also it's important to understand that the Holy Spirit will not enter snd occupy an unclean temple.

Shalom Robert. I appreciate your explanation it it is incorrect. Your use of terms such as N.T., O.T., and Calvary indicate that you are approaching the topic from a purely Christian (Roman / Gentile / non bIblical) point of view. Even the idea that things are “new” in this time and that spirituality is somehow accomplished in a different method than in the “old” is inherently flawed. This is aside from a complete conjecture, without ANY supporting evidence whatsoever, that Cornelius was “baptized” by John. So here is the bottom line, I encourage you to ask HaShem to help you see things through the lens of Judaism because that is the correct one. Your Messiah is a Pharisaical / Orthodox Jew…not a Christian and there is absolutely nothing “new” in the New Testament. Second, start watching the videos on this channel. And finally, visit ArtScroll.com and buy your study materials from them. Be well and thanks for the interaction.

Isn't it true that Jewish dietary laws (and other laws) were primarily designed to distinguish the people of Hashem from the surrounding nations? If that's true, and if it's also true that Peter's vision in Acts 10 was primarily designed to show that Hashem now accepts gentiles (other than as proselytes to Judaism), wouldn't it follow that the outward dietary restrictions that symbolize Jewish distinctiveness are no longer needed. What about Mark 7:14-23 where Jesus declares all food clean?
@LapidJudaism
@LapidJudaism 4 года назад
To your first question: no. Leviticus 11:45 makes it clear that the purpose is holiness. As for “Jesus” making all foods clean.....he never said that. It was added by the translators. The Messiah did not nullify any scripture.

Excellent explanation and insight. Thank you and God bless you. If anyone would like to find the historian’s reference-I was able to find the reference in Josephus’ works under The Jewish War, Book 4, Chapter 9, line (582) which reads “(582) and the last was erected above the top of the Pastophoria, where one of the priests stood of course, and gave a signal beforehand, with a trumpet at the beginning of every seventh day, in the evening twilight, as also at the evening when that day was finished, as giving notice to the people when they were to leave off work, and when they were to go to work again.” Fascinating! Although I agree with his is explanation of the Gentiles, I have always understood this passage to be eluding to that, to say it is not talking about...or in his words...."has nothing to do with food" is misrepresenting the purpose of the vision. Jews who were in Christ now had freedom from the bonds concerning food in the law. This vision illustrated not only that there is now no partiality concerning nations, but there is also freedom. To suggest food is not part of that freedom is irresponsible.......was Peter to rise and and .....kill....what? Gentiles...to do what? eat them?? No

Completely understand your point of view. It is shared by many AND it is 100% incorrect. The kosher laws are eternal. To break the Law equal to sin. If you "messiah" teaches this, then he is a sinner, he has broken to whole chapters of scripture and he is the picture of the false Messiah described in Dt. 13. It was a metaphor for Peter. What did Peter say was the meaning of the vision in chapter 11. Did he EVER mention food? No. Why? Because the Messiah isn't a Law breaker nor does he teach other to sin.
