[Actual 4K Scan] The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station - Lumière Brothers - 1896.

This beautiful restoration of the silent film comes from a new 4k scan by Institut Lumière, released on the 2015 French Blu-Ray, "Lumière, Le cinématographe 1895-1905." In the U.S. the compilation is streaming as "Lumière!" on Amazon Prime.
Video from 1080p Blu-Ray source, gently upscaled back to 4k to boost the allowed bitrate on RU-vid. Frame rate is 24fps (although it was originally hand cranked at around 20fps).
No cropping out parts of the frame. No interpolating extra fake frames to boost the frame rate. No using a neural net to guess how to fill in the details missing from a muddy ultra-compressed 720p source.
French title: L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat

This is a REAL 4K version of one of the first films ever, and it really looks so good. The Upscaling actually ruins the detail, and I would rather see a film in its original framerate rather than artifically "Enhancing" it to 60fps (If it were a 24fps film for example I want it to stay 24fps as much as possible, and not artificially changed to 60fps). That's why I prefer an actual scan of the film rather than an upscale, which is why this 4k version looks so great.

I know people being scared of this was probably a myth but I can genuinely understand why this would scare people seeing a moving picture for the first time. Viewing this standing close enough that the image fills my vision I still kinda unconsciously want to step back as the train passes. Great shot composition. Film scan+ Upscaling looks so crisp too! Satisfying quality to it and I can almost imagine the sound of the screeching brakes, chugging steam engine and the hustle and busle of passengers
@morganalabeille5004
@morganalabeille5004 Год назад
The stuff about people jumping out of their seats or actually thinking they were going to get hit are myths, but they definitely found it genuinely scary. Probably in a similar way to how people find horror movies scary today. The myths are likely a result of people talking about how it felt to see it and people taking their hyperbole way too seriously.

@andymyers101
@andymyers101 4 года назад
It's not! I would have posted it as straight 1080p but, as I mentioned in the notes, bitrate takes a huge hit if originally uploaded to RU-vid at 1080p. (i.e. the 1080p stream gets a higher bitrate if you upload a video at 4k). That was counterproductive to posting it with the most original detail possible. There are obviously several of points of degradation in the chain - hopefully someday we'll see an upload directly from the 4k master.

I think quite a few people are missing the point. The AI up-res was a breathtaking experience. Not because it was an accurate restoration, or even a particularly cinematic presentation, but because of the temporal resolution (the 60 frames per second). They say the past is a foreign country, and one of the things placing a barrier between us and past worlds is that jerky, flickery motion that is an artefact of bygone technology. It has a charm of its own, of course, and I would hate for us to try to erase it, but what a treat to be able to view those people as if they being filmed on a video camera. Admittedly quite a weird video camera, but the effect was quite transformative nonetheless. I do genuinely pity anyone who missed that about it.
