"For Kids" does not mean "wholesome and pure." It means "For Kids." And kids need to know the deep stuff, and it's best shared with them when told in a simple story. Like Star Wars.
Another one for Hot Take Tuesday! It's a been a while and it took me a while, but thankfully, I feel great about the outcome of this video. Here's to more depth!

I might just be a nerd who decided to read the books and doesn't look down on the prequels like half the damn planet. But I think complex star wars is very much a good thing. They don't have to be as complex or mind boggling as a Stanley Kubrick movie, but you can still tell a military thriller and it would work, even if you decide to be morally grey. So, while Star War is meant for kids, I think kids have more credit than we think. And this was a good video.

You've managed to put into words exactly what I love about Star Wars but haven't been able to express. I'm highly impressed and grateful.

"This is how Star Wars wins. Not by complicating what is basic, but simplifying what is true." Bravo. With those words you perfectly distilled the essence of not just Star Wars, but the elementals of reality (ex. aphorisms like "A stitch in time saves nine" or "There's always a bigger fish' are common sense metaphors that apply both universally and individually). That deserves a sub.

Being "for kids" is NOT being "stupid" or "harmless" justified. Ancient storytales for kids are not playing pureness or "soft SFW" censorship. That's why they're ALSO interesting and attractive, giving lessons without ridiculous "taboo" restrictions.

You've made me see that the order of magnitude of branching plotlines directly matches the order of release, and I find that so fascinating... Also "location that destroys locations" is funny but also actually gives me chills remembering what it was like to watch the deathstar destroy *A PLANET* when I was a kid

Yeah, I was seven when it came out. In 1977. I was part of the target market. Not news. Gen X knew it and loved it anyway.

When people say "Star Wars is for kids", it's almost always to defend bad writing in Disney Star Wars.
@KyleKringle
@KyleKringle 6 часов назад
@@Dr.Metalblood I guess I've not realized that because I haven't watch new Star Wars. Outside of the Clone Wars and the Sequels, I've haven't seen enough new stuff to even hate it. I've seen the reactions, but that's it. That's probably why I didn't think to mention this.

Just because a piece of media is digestable for kids, that doesn't mean it's target auidence is kids, like you're implying. Just because kids can understand and pull enjoyment out of a story doesn't mean it's inherently a kids movie. That's why the term "family movie" exists. Take the Incredibles, Puss in Boots 2, or Toy Story 1-2. All those movies can because digestable for kids, yet that doesn't mean they have to be infantile in what they say, as all those movies have greater meaning to the adults in the audience that the kids will miss out on. This goes with star wars too, the kids will be focusing on the cool battles and wants the hero to win, but they're never going to consciously pull the deeper meaning out of the movies. This all feels likes a post-hoc defense aganist all the shitty Star Wars shows and movies which are just infantile, or blantly poorly constructed for the tired defense of "it's for kids" comes rolling out. Just because a piece of media is digestable for kids, does not mean it is then inherently targeted towards kids.

@@AlexMoffet I think we mostly agree on the issue, but perhaps there's some terms that need nuance. I'll grant you this. I wouldn't call Star Wars "a kid's movie." In the same way, I wouldn't call Iron Man (2008) "a kid's movie." But at the same time, I find it difficult to describe these examples as "family films." Any descriptor is going to have a connotation that limits the genre or subject matter of a story. "Teen movie" means it's a high school comedy. "Guy movie" means it's action flick. "Chick flick" means it's a romcom. "Adult movie" means it's X-rated. These sentences aren't absolutely true, but it's hard to deny that people tend to feel this way with each given descriptor. Same when I say "for kids." I don't mean to say that Star Wars or even most Disney products are infantile, or somehow inappropriate for adults to partake in, and I believe I sufficiently nuanced that out throughout the video. My argument wasn't that because Star Wars is easily digestible and that therefore means it's only suitable for kids. George Lucas' intent to have the first Star Wars be "for 12 year old" is something I took into account, despite the joking dismissal. Obviously, an extremely violent movie can also be easily followed and understood by a child. The reason we don't show that to kids, however, is because preserving most of their innocence is a necessity for raising them right. In the full clip from the 40th Anniversary Celebration, Lucas went on to say, and I'm paraphrasing: "here are some of the things you ought to know before entering deeper in the real world." That was George's intention with Star Wars, and I sought to highlight his success in doing so. That's ultimately what stories are for: passing down wisdom without passing down the failure that first gave us that wisdom. And I would never *ever* use the excuse "oh it just for kids" to hand-wave poorly made movies and shows. Kids deserve the best stories out of all of us, and if most adults hate a certain project, then it's most certainly bad for the kids.

The whole Starwars is for kids argument is from george Lucas, because of fan backlash for how annoying some fans thought jarjar was. I thought jarjar was okay, but he wasn't a funny character when I saw the film at the age of 10. Starwars is no longer for males at this point. And it's not even good.
@KyleKringle
@KyleKringle 4 часа назад
@@aaronmoravek Correct. "It's for kids" is a bad excuse for poor execution. That said, Star Wars is still meant for that general demographic. And to your point, C3PO had some funny moments but they were actually endearing as opposed to Jar Jar's "peeeyeewsa" which was pointless and annoying

@@KyleKringle George made the prequels to sell toys to boys, it's essentially a giant toy commercial. Now we have a 100 million dollar series with women that don't allow boys to be born in their society. Boys = bad.
