Been reading a lot of history books, and have constantly been procrastinating about what AD/BC/BCE/CE means and how it works. Ahahah, thank you for this!
Thank you for this accurate explanation. A lot of people believe that BCE and CE have "officially replaced" BC and AD, but they haven't. They have been "officially included" as labels in the numbering system. I'm an historian and still use BC and AD for my publications.
I don't know why I went searching B.C. and A.D. today. But after an hour or so looking at different sites and articles, this 6min video has answered my question and helped me understand far more than all those sites combined! I thank you!
This is such an Amazing Channel. - I failed in School and Dropped out of College due to Mental Health Issues. I'm now a Middle Aged man in my 30's, and I'm re-educating myself on just about everything I missed out on. Thank you so much for this! I love your channel!
I have to explain this every semester (I am a professor of ancient history) and from now on I'll just use this video. I'll confess that I still think it's strange and sad that college do not come into college already knowing such basic information.
I have been searching for this for a long time, no matter how much I read the art history timeline it was never clear to me how this thing works exactly. Thanks for clearifying this, make more videos like this.
Every time I see "BCE" & "CE" I read that this person possibly cares more about their own politics than actual history, science, & truth. I'd like to ask them how they feel about changing the names of the months or even the days of the week - since many of those also originate from ancient religions.
@@carlpeters8690 you do realize that you proved your original accusation in relation to yourself. The idea and use of CE/BCE was presented by Christians and used by Abrahamic religious scholarship. Dionysius Exiguus made an error with the calculations of AD and BC. Furthermore the months have been changed before by the additions of new ones (September for example was the seventh month) and naming, the weeks names have also changed names (French for example still uses the Roman god names and English the Anglo-Saxon god names for example). On another note we could use the date for 2024 as 5785 as the creation of the world date.... or 1445 AH (Anno Hajiri)....
@@andrewhannam. It seems you either don't understand or are misconstruing my objection. I'm (mostly) with Lindybeige and Metatron on this one. (Whenever I add links to their videos my reply disappears so you'll have to look those up)
Great explanation, thanks! I've been watching Roman Empire from Netflix and it was annoying not to understand when the events took place =| This was good, now I have better understanding.
Thanks for this informative video, and thanks for clear speaking with a decent pronunciation that is easy to understand by whom their native language is not English.
On the Apollo 11 plaque it says "Here men from planet earth first set foot upon the moon July 1969 A.D." So even nerdy types get it wrong occasionally! 🤓 🤣
I was taught this back in the 80's by my mom when she introduced me to Greek mythologies. I'm glad it's the samething you just posted 😊. Now, I can tell my kids the same thing. Thanks man.....very educating and clear. 👍👍👍💯
Thanks for the explanation. You made it So much easier to understand. So what else would they be offended with? Days of the week or months of the year. These were also named after pagan gods and deities. It has religious affinity. Should we prepare for new names to replace them? If BCE & CE are anchored on the same events that necessitated BC & AD, why bother with the change.
@@s3renity690 ok... So what about days and months named after pagan gods? Are they ok with paganism? Does paganism align with empirical scientific proof judging from your comment. (This isn't an attack on your comment by the way.) One day there would also be a cogent reason to challenge the alpha numeric symbols we use because of their religious affinity ... At least these aren't christain. 🤔🤔🤔
@@ziizee4614 The reasons are mostly historical; that dating system was in common use in Europe for many centuries, and European colonization spread their calendar around the world. While religious belief has faded somewhat in the modern world (although it’s still probably more prevalent than you think), things like dating systems are pretty hard to change since they’re so ingrained in a culture. So no one changes it. Academics have made a move towards BCE and CE as a way to keep the dates but simply remove the religious component. I feel like most people who refer to the months or days don’t think about the pagan gods, that is if they even know it’s associated with them. In addition, it’s hard to imagine anyone to not think about Christianity when they say “Before or after Christ,” ya know?
@@tylerantunes2066 No they dnt the majority of scholars do not believe he existed the Historians of his time mentioned nothing of him & Judaism doesn't believe in him
Just came here again to learn, I was reading an encyclopedia full of terms like this, I decided to download this very informative video, thanks :) All the best mate 😊👍
@@StradaleF430 we can say the same thing with other characters like budah or Muhammed. But who had more power over the years Christianity or the world? What language is the most common English or Arab. You see it I'd not if it's correct or not, the reason is used is bc the people who invented this years are the ones who conquered the world and who shape the world, and that is not bad. That is how history works
I love history, and i alway reading a book about history, my friends know that i have a little knowledge about history, and when they ask me about the letters BC,AD,BCE and CE i only knew the meaning but i cant explained what is the difference of it, only the BC and AD, now i know what is BCE and CE stand for, thanks a lot😁
The emphasis about AD is highly appreciated which had mislead me to be "After Death" since my high school subject World History is very enlightening aside from knowing their new designations as BCE and CE...
excellent video. I think the AD, after death confusion was odd how it came about considering Jesus is not dead but lives. He died for our sins and was resurrected three days later.
Very good explanation...thank you so much.. I did know about this concept.. and thank you for correcting us about AD as after Jesus was born... I used to the same mistake as u told in the video by referring AD as After Death... Thanks a tonne for such a good knowledgeable video... - With Love from India... 😃😃😄😄
So spiritual people created our current system of numbering years, and they honored the source of their inspiration with lettering system, BC and A.D. And people who hate that religion, or don’t like any religion at all, want to keep using their system, but strip away any credit to their inspiration. Got it
if there is no year "0", wouldnt the timeline be incorrect? after "birth of christ" it should count 2, ,3 , ... and 3 years after the birth of christ would be "ad 4". or is it? appreciate the video though. thx
@@felixf4378 maybe you should watch the video till the end. there is no placeholder for the year "0" because there is/was no year "0". i take back the timeline stuff because proportions are right if jesus was born in the year 1 BC and has had his first birthday in AD 1. so the no-year-zero-problem just affects you if you want to measure years across his birth. sorry kinda want to get it right.
right, and how about those people who were born the same year with christ? weren’t they born on year 0? the timeline’s confusing and i believe it’s mathematically wrong 🤔
I'm 42 years old and glad I finally learned thisand although I had somewhat of an understanding of how everything worked I didn't know 100% and this video explained it perfectly!
It's honestly childish if you ask me. They don't like to use AD or BC yet if they had to explain when and why the counting started, they still have to say it is from the supposed birth date of Jesus. People are just silly.
So they wanted BCE & CE in order to avoid mentioning Jesus…and yet the “fixed point” in time for the calendar remains the same…the birth of Christ. Those are some smart people whoever started that nonsense.
I am currently reading a very source-laden history of Hellenistic Astrology. The author uses BCE and CE, so I was getting confused. Now I am ever more curious about ancient history and philosophy as a result of my readings so far. Very nice presentation and visuals. I look forward to watching a few more of your videos or so. Thank you very much!
If you’re under 12 years old that’s understandable. If not & you just now figured this out🤦♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️... wow. Terrible pathetic teachers or you didn’t give shit at school & tuned out sentence longer than 2 seconds. How hard is it to understand “AD” after death (or year of the lord) & “BC” before Christ.
@@wildcat8797 I mean, you yourself did just say that AD is after death, which the video explains is not true. So you can't get that mad when someone doesn't understand the concept.
I think we need MAIA - Make America Intelligent Again. There was no A.D., woke, Marxism, commies, etc. when C.E. came into use and there was no A.D. prior to 525 C.E. LMAO!
thank you so much this explained very many things, and i thought AD was after death but now i know i was wrong and i also did not find this my teacher sent me the link because we were talking about AD 79 i am 8
While you gave a good explanation for the terms BC & AD as well as CE & BCE. However AD is the first letter from two Latin words i.e. Anno Domini (in English Year Lord) an expression meaning "In the time of our LORD." The reason for the change to CE & BCE was not to get it out of the religious realm it was to deny the importance of Jesus CHRIST. However Common Era has no real meaning while BC and AD is actually why there is a divide been ancient time and modern times it is the reason for the growth of recognition of the individual and why cannibalism, murder and slavery were wrong. It started the decline of in not only cannibalism, murder and slavery but in God-kings, starvation and poverty, in other words everything Progressism and its love of the State is trying to bring back and increase. This is why "taking it out of the religious realm" is only an excuse and not the real reason.
I though it went bce: before Christ existed BC :before Christ ... then it went ;CE :christ existed and then Ad: after death This cleared up alot of things ... thank you...
Honestly, I don’t get why people are using the new ones when they’re still using it for when they believe Jesus Christ was born I’m not a religious person I just think people are so sensitive nowadays
