I used to think that the best way to draw people into the faith was by making it as trendy and contemporary as possible in its liturgical expression. What I’ve come to realize since then, is that, except in really rare cases, this approach, in the balance of things, has the opposite effect.
And it isn’t hard to understand why. The most obvious criticism I could make about it is that it excludes large portions of faithful Catholics and that’s because popular contemporary culture isn’t real culture - it’s consumerist culture.
All the fixtures of what we think of as culture, like food, language, and music, are actually just biproducts of what happens when people are bound together by something radically communal - which is often worship - which is why the word cult appears in the word culture.
But pop culture is something that is packaged together for its marketability and then consumed individualistically. It’s antithetical to what culture is and it doesn’t bring people together, it separates them in their own unique identity based on the products that they happen to prefer and consume. It’s fundamentally individualistic.
That doesn’t produce inclusivity except by accident so when we draw inspiration from pop consumer culture for the way we worship as a community, it’s always going to exclude someone who doesn’t find whatever pop culture persuasion that has been chosen, attractive.
Even if you pick the most popular music or personal style of communication, there will always be some people who are repelled by that and, as a result, think that what they’re rejecting is the Catholic Faith, when in fact, it’s just one particular attempt at shoehorning some trend or preference into the Catholic faith. They’re rejecting a current of fashion and mistaking it for the faith.
If they’re going to reject the faith and they reject it for what it actually is, then that’s their culpability before God. But if they reject the faith because I substituted Gregorian chant with 80’s style power ballads, then it’s I who am culpable for that rejection. And that’s a scary thought.
And for us Catholics, the one thing we have in common and the one thing that draws us together is the Catholic faith as it has been preserved and handed down from each generation going all the way back to Christ himself.
That’s the thing we have in common that draws us together but when that is substituted for some personal preference of the priest or the music leaders, then you will inevitably and unjustly exclude people from their own faith.
You will compromise the only thing that we can all say we are here to partake in and turn it into something that only a portion are there to partake in. So the very last thing that we can say about that approach is that it’s in the name of inclusivity or in making it more attractive.

Pope Benedict XVI (2008): "The notion that priest and people should look at each other while praying appeared only in the modern era and was completely foreign to ancient Christendom. After all, priest and people pray, not to each other, but to the one Lord. That is why they look in the same direction while praying; either to the East, as a cosmic symbol for the Lord who is coming, or, when this is not possible, to an image of Christ in the apse, to a cross, or else they simply look up together, as our Lord did during his high-priestly prayer on the evening before his Passion (Jn 17:1)." For twenty five years I played the guitar at Mass thinking it would help bring young people to the church. But it didn’t happen. The Faith goes back 2000 years and Vatican II failed in form and substance to meet the challenges of the modern era. Losing the Latin Mass was the single most destructive thing that happened to Catholicism. Having a pope who continues the attack on tradition only makes the whole situation all the more sad.

@@elliottfunkhouser4486 God I sure wish he was lol. Unfortunately if the Catholic Church is wrong, then so is everyone else. From my point of view as a former atheist converting to Catholicism, it seems that either Jesus keeps his promise that the Church will remain the pillar and bulwark of the truth, against which the gates of hades will not prevail; or we were all wrong about Jesus and should not be Christians at all. The only alternative is that we're in the end times, I guess; that the Church is declining as prophesied and the world will soon come to an end. But that's the theory of last resort, something to retreat to when all other suggestions have failed. I don't think the Church has quite reached that point, and I have to take a long view of history. The Church has had many disasters in its two thousand year history. For it to suffer a few schisms, to endure a dozen or two bad popes, and to lose a few battles with modernity, wouldn't mean it's lost the war against hades. Since the hierarchy, unity, authority, and reach of the Church haven't collapsed yet, and since we're seeing a revival of enthusiasm for orthodox Catholic faith and tradition among the youngest generations (including myself), there's still reason to have faith that Jesus will keep his promise in the long run.

As a bi-ritual (Vetus Ordo and Novus Ordo) diocesan priest from Spain, the fact of the matter is that 50+ years of postconciliar liturgical abuse can no longer be considered “abuse.” In other words, consented abuse for half a century is a feature, not a bug… While you make a point about fraternal correction of people who may unknowingly be abusing the liturgy, ever since Traditionis Custodes and its (false) Dubia, total war has been declared on the traditional Roman liturgy. Niceties are now sadly more of a luxury in times of (relative) peace. But we are now in a state of declared total war. And while more traditional Novus Ordo will now suffer ridiculous prohibitions, let’s be honest: it’s glaring proof that it was never designed to be “traditional” in the first place. The Novus Ordo is anthropocentric. Period. The Vetus Ordo is Theocentric. Period. The two rites have different underlying theologies. There is no getting around this. And the time is fast approaching where their coexistence will be practically (as well as “officially”) incompatible. So, each and every Catholic, will have to ultimately decide: man-made worship of our wonderful selves… or divinely inspired liturgical worship of the One and Triune God who created us in his image and likeness, and redeemed us in his image and likeness.

The real question is: If this is Christs Church, how come that this church promotes inferior rites, bad morals, false sacraments and tolerate heretics, apostates and schismatics as an act of charity? Christs Church is infallible and undefectible(=DOGMA), she cannot err, teach error, contradict herself, give bad morals/liturgy/sacraments, she cannot espouse heresies or consists of heretics or apostates and suppress ppl faithful to tradition. That's impossible! Where is the UNITY of (the Catholic!) FAITH within your church(one mark of Christs Church) when the vast majority of churchgoers does not even believe in the Eucharist and a hierarchy that tolerate or participate in pagan worship? I highly recommend to watch: "Can This Really Be The Church?" by a traditional father also my playlist: "Lecture - About the Church" explained by a traditional bishop, "TRADITION", "MODERN ERRORS" & many more stuff... My old parish had a priest who did stuff pretty interestingly. He was a great fun-loving guy, and his greatest flaw was he would tend to drift during homilies and blessings, but he was very attentive and reverent to the liturgy. For the Liturgy of the Word, he faced the congregation, but once it reached the Liturgy of the Eucharist, he said the rest of the Mass ad orientum. Essentially, preaching to the people was meant to be face-to-face, but once Christ was present on the altar, it became necessary to face Him and minister to Him that way Edit: watched farther and Brian said exactly that! I think this is a beautiful, and the right, way to celebrate the Mass

A lot of folks still seem to think Vatican II created the “novus ordo.” One should at least read “Sacrosanctum concilium” to see what was actually called for, like Latin and Gregorian chant. You may notice that in the bishop's letter, he only requests it. He didn't decree it with any canonical weight. Hi Brian! I'm about halfway through the video and I decided to pause it there to share some thoughts. I agree with you in the fact that those of us who follow the Traditional Latin Mass shouldn't go full "Rad Trad" and call out these disgusting (YEAH, I SAID IT! DISGUSTING) liturgical abuses like the one I saw from the "Mass" you're talking about, as I found it from a link off of an essay that was written partly about it. I got to just about that new age yoga-ish word vomit from this priest and I felt so disgusted that I closed my browser window and deleted that from my viewing history because I don't want Google to suggest more horrific videos like that to me. What I saw in those few minutes was bad enough. I cannot believe that "Masses" like that exist, and I used to happily attend them. I mean, that introduction should have been red flag number 1 for me. Then that broadway-esque showtune song to start the whole thing? I was saying to myself in horror "What the heck is this?!" The attire from one of the gentlemen there too! I bet the guy was wearing flip-flops in that church. Beyond disrespectful to our Lord. That was before the aforementioned hippie manifesto by that priest. Only about 6 minutes in to that production and I wanted to cry, throw up, and cry again. I couldn’t understand how these people and anybody else who follows that can call that a valid Catholic Mass. They are woefully ignorant, and honestly my problem was ignorance as well before being invited to my first Latin Mass. I didn’t know any better and on top of that I wasn’t encouraged to find out any better either. I was just pretty much encouraged to accept the Novus Ordo as my Catholic faith. After going on 7.5 years and counting of attending TLM, I can say that I have only attended 3 Novus Ordo “Masses” and I was thoroughly disgusted with all of them. The liturgical abuses, the lack of modesty from the laity, the blatant disrespect given to our Lord at the tabernacle, etc… it was heartbreaking. If calling the liturgical abuses out when we see them is wrong, we have to find the best way to do it right because if we do nothing we’re just as guilty as those who do these horrific acts themselves.

Christ and the apostles didn’t talk that way. Neither did the saints. I’m sure some people took it too far, and maybe a more assertive tone turns some people off initially. But the only way the liturgical abuse stops is if people stop putting up with it and make a stink about it. I think Catholics have wanted to be charitable and trusting for a long time, and our silence on these issues has led to more of the same, and worse. Anyways, I’m just a regular guy and I’m no scholar. But that’s my two cents.

I just wanted to mention here that I recently listened to Fr. Ripperger/exorcist about Gregorian chant. He reports that it is a tool they use to exorcise demons. When someone comes to him/them for exorcism they sometimes ask that the person first listen to Gregorian chant 24/7 - to play it very low so that they can hardly hear it - in their homes and they are given some prayers and often they don’t have to see him. I have been playing Gregorian chant in my home during the day very low (sometimes so I can hear it) to protect and cleanse my home. There is a wonderful you tube that chants the St. Benedict Prayer in Latin while a Priest prays Latin prayers. Awesome and effective. I have taught myself to chant along with them and have been led to pray for Priests (under the direction of my spiritual director). Just a tidbit. I also suggested to a therapist who works with veterans who have serious PTSD (which my son did before he died in the military) to suggest that they listen to Gregorian chant 24/7 in their homes.

Nicely done, Brian, as always. I would like to add that the reason the priest faces east, that is faces God along with all his people, is because that is exactly what a priest does. It wasn’t until I began learning about the Traditional Latin Mass that I understood some of the most basic liturgical things. Many liturgical scholars criticize facing the people because it obscures the actual role of the priest.

Thanks a lot. What I came across, as defense of the facing the congregation, was idea that as soon as there are more people gathered in His name, Jesus is among them. Thus, not anymore distant God, but very close one. Adding the Idea we should see Jesus in our neighbor, I can see, where does the urge for cirular shapes of many new churches come from. It was only when I attended for the first time the TLM, I got the feéing of being present at the calvary. Before that, I was taught that the mass is unbloody representation of the one sacrifice, but struggled to find the fact resembling in the liturgy. Surely can be I got older on the meantime. My bad I haven’t asked when I was younger. :-) Anyway What answers would we get to the question: What is the mass? Reminds me now about the research on belief in real presence. Unfortunately, when I ask this question my close ones, they are reluctant to answer, because they feel I ask this as a allknowing, teststyle where you get ridiculed when answering incorrectly. That is why Your video hit the nail perfectly. I have got to work on my diction. God bless You

The modeling of the priest is so crucial. Outside the rubrics of TLM, how reverent a Mass is, of there's opportunities to actually pray, is based on the individual priest. We had a holy priest in our Novus Ordo Mass who did the best he could with what he had (NO rubrics). He didn't rush through anything and once Communion was distributed, he would stay kneeling in front of the Tabernacle for the duration of the Communion hymns. What a difference it makes! Now we have priests who just go to sit in their chairs and wait out the hymn. Not a lot of people stay kneeling praying after receiving Our Lord bc why would they? Example comes from above. If the priest doesn't see a need to pray silently in the presence of the Lord, why should the rest of us? Ad orientum I think has the potential to save Novus Ordo Masses. That and bringing back the altar railing.

Attending Orthodox liturgy the last year has been very special in part because the priest is obvious he is facing east/altar, which means he is facing God, while he leads us in worship. During the scripture reading or homily the priest faces us. I also love that during the part of the worship directed to God, all the able bodied believers stand because servants stand in the presence of the master. During the homily we sit since our attention is now on a human priest teaching. When that ends and our attention switches to worshiping God, we all stand in the presence of our master.

I prefer Ad Orientem for a variety of reasons, but I do not think using language like "the priest's back towards God" is helpful. The tabernacle could be moved to be in the middle of the altar and the "problem" is solved. That even resembles Temple worship more. I do not think the point of Ad Orientem is to "face God" as if he is placed in a certain space within the church. It is to lead and join the people in worship, to focus our attention, as you said, and because we are not there to see an entetainer.

I remember many years ago the priest of our parish explained to us, during a homily, that the reason the priest faces the people is so that during the consecration we can all look at the body of Christ and adore and worship, and when the priest brings the eucharist back to where we can't see it any more then we bow our heads along with the priest. When understood in this way (I think) it changes the way people view versus populum. Because of this explanation I have never have had an issue with versus populum, and to be completely honest was surprised to find out a few years ago that many take issue with versus populum. During that same mass you could sense the impact this homily had. Even though I was still a pre-teen when our priest said this homily, I remember that very same mass everyone in our parish went from putting their heads down during the consecration to looking up at the body of Christ and adoring. Same goes for the chalice of the Lord's blood. P.S. My mom believes the same thing about moving the Tabernacle to the middle of the altar.

I am not against it at all. It just has to be done right and for the right reason. What that priest gave is, in my opinion, a good reason. Having God "in our midst" is an argument I can get behind. I prefer it Ad Orientem for historical reasons, but I do not think it is the only correct way.

We are all in different stages of our journey to union with God. I am in a very different place as an older gramma from where I was back in the day. Jesus does not get upset when each one of His children do something different if it brings them closer to Himself, Jesus. Jesus does not care which direction the priest faces. When the priest faces the altar, he is leading the people, and the eyes of the faithful are drawn towards the Tabernacle. In Versus populum, facing the people, the priest is behind the altar, and he becomes the focal point for the eye. So in other words, the bishops do NOT believe in the resurrection of the One True God which is an absolute for Catholics since it is in all 4 of the Catholic Creeds. The chief foundational fundamental of a person believing in an absolute principle is acting by practice towards that belief in a manner ACCORDINGLY. A person who does not do this has an empty character and lacks any credibility to their status of affiliation with said belief. If you believe in something. You WILL practice it, not BAN the practice of IT!! The only time a person irrationally commits that action is when they are either literally insane, or *deliberately attempting to destroy the very concept* of said belief. This is a universal principle of logic that applies to every person from all walks of life, by the very nature of their existence.

@jend9559
@jend9559 2 года назад
When Christ encountered the sacrilege in the Temple he did not invite those people to better understanding as he did in other sinful encounters. He swiftly and fiercely chastised them. Why? Because it was not just a regular sin. It was a grave offense of sacrilege. The priests that commit these sacrilege on the altar know exactly what is proper and they choose to do their own thing. It is a deliberate sacrilege. And for this reason, I do not agree with this tepid invitation response. The response should be as swift and decisive as Our Lord modeled for us himself. A priest is held to a much higher standard then the guitar player that doesn't know any better. The priest is culpable for the abuse and for not teaching his flock and leading them to sacrilege and scandal.

Most especially since the laity began their efforts by first addressing the offender, then writing to the Bishops, and have yet to see correction. Why wouldn't we experience the consecration of the Eucharist in front of us if His sole purpose is for us? The whole mass is the CELEBRATION of the EUCHARIST. The Eucharist is for us, not for Himself. If God wanted us to just pray to him, not for the sake of our souls, then we would still be having only the Jewish praying tradition. So in that case: I think that having only the latin mass with the priest giving his back would actually be against the purpose of the Eucharist. Be sure to review Cardinal Sarah's exhortation to all priests universally to begin celebrating Ad Orientam when he was Prefect for Divine Worship. Sadly Pope Francis removed him from that position shortly after that exhortation, but I think the Ad Orientam orientation and Pro Populum disorientation is more serious & important and problematic (respectively) than we might all realize. Traditionally, the Tabernacle, where Jesus is Eucharistically present, Body, Blood, Soul & Divinity, is behind the altar. Also, from the Scriptures (in Revelation) we know that Jesus is to return from the East. Ad Orientam is sometimes referred to as Ad Dominum (to the Lord). And the Crucifix is usually located behind and above the altar. Almost all of the most ancient altars in Rome were designed architecturally for the priest and congregation to all face the altar. However, you are correct that was not always the case. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (one of the 4 major basilicas in Rome, the architecture and practice for the main altar was & is with the priest pro populum. (I believe the other 3 - St Peter's, St Paul Outside the Walls & St John Lateran - originally the priest faced Ad Orientam.) Certainly the norm is for churches to face the East. And I think the Orthodox Churches are more stringent about this architectural practice.
