Any idea on how this Breton tune got its English name somewhere? And how it got popular?

My guess is that dro is wren in Breton. Dreoilín is its Irish name and comes from the word draoi meaning druid: the wren was the sacred bird associated with druids. The words are dryw and derwydd in Welsh and, I suspect, the Breton words must be very close to this.
