ADAM and SPITFIRES - My first flight on the Flylight ADAM

The ADAM is the latest off the Flylight design board with a few new options. The ATOM 80 powered version is designed for thermalling to keep the overall weight as low as possible. Having the option to retract the wheels made the machine look very elegant. I really enjoyed the handling and it made me want to try and thermal my PeaBee. Ben Ashman has really designed a fantastic wing and trike combination. The ADAM flexwing is a cracking combination and I can't wait to test the Moster powered version.

All my flying buddys get mad i dont do more videos. Truth is one i hate spending hours of editing. I love the peace ,tranquillity, converging with the birds. I had a huge golden eagle Fly over the top of my wing and look back at me. I was playing john denver (the eagle and the hawk) in my headset. Missed the whole thing my batterys were dead! I love the simplicity of flying like a bird.

That is a very interesting aircraft! I’m glad there is a Moster version, as my 220 pounds (100 kilograms) butt naked weight would make the Atom 80 version into a go-cart with a huge spoiler. I will add the Moster version to my list to consider. Thanks Giles and keep them coming!

Hi Zach, I'm glad as well, I'm 86 kgs. I know a few 10-kg pilots and the Moster is more than enough power. I can't wait to try the Moster powered version. I was genuinely a joy to fly.

Great video. I was looking behind you and noticed a Lazair (dual engine, yellow and red) hanging from the ceiling. I owned one of those for about ten years. As I recall, each engine was rated at 9.5 HP but it was so clean and light that it flew wonderfully with the small power plants.

Hi Stone859, yes good spot, that Lazair is an electric conversion by Flylight. I've been told they flew very well. A bit before my time ;)

Thanks for all the videos mate - I wanted to ask if you have any showing a full pre-flight/walkarounds please? I see all these wires and spars and bolts and really curious how often and what gets checked prior to your flights. All the best and catch you on the next one. Cheers. Jim

Hi Jim, I have kept this part out as walk rounds are not always the same depending on the aircraft, even flexwing to flexwing they are different. Seeing as you asked, I visually check all cables ( running a hand down the flying wires), any broken strands is a non flyer, and visually check all nuts and bolts on everything. It's a good thing to get into a flow, I always put the split rings on one side to I can count them. The more you do it, the more you'll notice when something isn't right. Easier to check on the ground than in the air. Aviation is about assurance through checking, even when I flew my paramotor I did frame , engine and wing checks. Most Microlight aicraft have the preflight checks in the Pilot Operating Handbook ( POH). Sorry for the long winded response, but I hope that helps.

Hi Doug, its so good to see you back in the air. Yes the Adam certainly is, it would take smaller vehicle to transport. I know of an ADAM in the USA now, first one delivered a few weeks ago.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 Thanks! Great to be back in my happy place. :) The ADAM looks nice but I need something that will handle off field / bumpy terrain. Something like the Maverick Outlander. Hobby budget is next to nil this year so no weight shift trike for me this year. Probably take a few more PG lessons and that's about it. Well other than burn a bunch of gas/oil. LOL

Nice vid Giles. Watching you come off the runway I think I'd want the spitfire version. As much as I like the Atom's frugal consumption, direct drive and light weight, my weight is too similar to yours and boggy wet grass fields would be a problem

Hi Terry, no licence required for this class, it's a Sub 70. The glider guys have a thing call the while line trophy, it a very expensive award for the wheel up landing, only ever seen one of those and it was a long line on the runway. If I ever had access to a 2 seater, I'd happily take you for a flight.

I would be very interested in you different climb rate (wheels up / down) Interesting vid for sure . I loved flying Adam Atom80 and would own one . Flying the moster ( factory) Adam wing was also fantastic. We are blessed with what we have to fly . Ben flew to Jordan in a microlight many years ago …. The Adam can achieve the same Cruise speeds and Burns half the fuel ! Down side only one seat ..

An affordable, good looking and safe motorglider . What I like about the Pipistrel Sinus but 150kUSD cheaper and you could keep it stored in your garage. This Ashman designer a genius ! Next test with a one hundred Kg pilot same toy engine and one hour's worth of gas. Enough to get to that ridge or thermal. (and back to LZ) Gain some weight GF22 !!!!

Haha, Ben has limited the pilot weight to 80kgs for the Atom 80, the Moster version is the one I really want to try.

Interesting Stuff ... Nice one Giles ;-) PS: ... Is there a 'Plan B' option if the string to put the wheels back down for landing fails ? ... and ... I REALLY don't like the idea of reaching your hand back towards that prop, to check the 'up' wheels mechanism ... it's probably fine (just me being over cautious)

Hi Brian, your concern is valid, however my hand is further awaiting from the propeller than it is when on your back in a paramotor, I did check this. If the string failed, you can pop them back and they lock automatically, it's very clever. The inner doors also help pull the wheels back.

Another awesome video Giles! What flight computer are you using here? Is it expensive? It looks amazing! How are you connected to voice recording and traffic control? Does Micro Avionics custom build the comms for your specific radio and recording?

Hi Hollady, the Oudie 5 Pro is overkill for what I use it for but I've had it from my paragliding days. A phone with Skydemon is just as good. My PM100 is commented to an airband radio, you'll see it in a lot of my content. My headset has been vlog modified by Micro Avionics which can be requested by anyone on ordering. I hope that answers your questions. My next video has a request for Qand As so hold any other questions till then and I'll put them in.

Nice little machine 👌I’m in the process of making my own , I have a degree in structural engineering and access to a full machine shop. I’ll be making everything one it will be way below the 70 kg limit. That wing on the atom looks nice and tight , the wing on these little things makes a big difference . I feel like I’m stalling all the time when I go from the combat t to the fox t 😂🤣20 knot cruise difference feel weird to go slow now. Very nice when they carve like that hey especially when thermaling 👌🇦🇺🍻

Hi Mike, the engine is from the paramotor world and a derivative of the old Miniplane TOP80 engine and uses the same parts. The ADAM was a dream to fly, more silly smiles. Ben knows what he is doing on a design, so may brilliant creations from the Flylight stable.

Your radio calls are a bit different the Sywell, Sywell then RT the Sywell is like safety com yet they have a dedicated fequency? The retract look a bit of a faf but that is probably due to lack of practice.

Hi Algy, yes there was no ATC so all blind transmissions so back to the traffic calls. Definitely lack of practice, it was the first time in anger but was straight forward. I just wished it was a thermic day so I could play with some rising air currents.

Yes, but designed by Ben, Aeros and Ben work very closely on all the Flylight wing designs. It was a Dream to fly the ADAM wing and trike.

Hi Harry, I'm not about the weight limit of the aircraft, just the power plant. The climb rate was only a little better with the wheels up. I'd want to try the Moster version.

Hey Giles great video but I have to ask, in the event of tucking the wheels away,you later find that the wheels won't pop out into their landing position, can you still land it.?

Hi Natural9, there isn't much holding them in and the lock is only on the down(out). You can still belly land but on the Atom 80, the prop spins so you'd end up breaking that. It's a very reliable and proven system, Ben has used it before.

Mas sobre a diferença de consumo e velocidade nas 2 situações.?! Legal também mostra o mecanismo completo do sistema de recolhimento e fixação das rodas de pouso. Me ajudaria muito... A principal diferença entre as rodas para cima e para baixo é o arrasto. Eu voei com a máquina por apenas 25 minutos, mas o ATOM 80 queima tão pouco combustível que seria difícil saber quanto na taxa de queima. A asa Adam é uma asa de manuseio tão doce. Lamento se o tradutor não tornou minha resposta compreensível. Obrigado por comentar.

@@GolfFoxtrot22 I would want an engine/prop combo that could safely max climb at the wings VNE. Went up Saturday, had some ok landings . Past my Pstar so will go up again and if I get a few more good ones than should be cleared to Solo.😀

Any improvement to climb after pulling the undercarriage up?

There was a little improvement in the climb but with the small engine only putting out 16hp any reduction in drag will help the climb. The Moster version ( a future video), it was not that noticeable.

Great video Giles but wouldn't it be a bit of a FAF putting the landing gear down in the event of an engine failure especially at a low level? Is the ADAM and the Moster still two aircraft that you don't need a PPL for?

Hi David, I think with the little airbrake surfaces, they kind of pop out quickly. I think I'd get height before putting them away, I was just on the limit of the power of the little 80cc engine. Yes, no licence required ( Sub70 exempt) the ADAM is even lighter than the PeaBee. It was good fun to fly, I love to try the Moster version.
