this is more a reflection of why did they get married in the first place? statistics should be, theres a lot of spontaneous superficial marriages that are leading to divorces, and even then some may not because of denial

Adam is wrong about the divorce rate. It’s over 50%. And he neglects to mention it’s 70-% if you marry someone who already has children. And it’s even higher if your between the ages of 18 and 25. And also he doesn’t mention how many people who do habitate, which is something that started in the 60’s. And also kids are dating at a much younger age which will lead to marrying young which will lead to more divorces..just sayin.

My parents got divorced when I was around 6 years old, and before that every day they would be yelling and screaming at each other and sometimes I would hide in a closet with a cat because they scared me. And I would hide in my moms room and lock my dad out while she smokes, he would somehow unlock the door and come in just to scream at her for no damn reason and one time I told him to knock it off and he punched me in the chest (he was drunk at that time but still doesn’t make it right). So divorce can be a good thing for children, helps them get away from their parents screaming at each other and maybe away from an abusive parent in general.

Yeah, my parents acted the same way, always screaming and fighting with each other while my sister and I would hide out somewhere. We begged our mother to leave my dad for as long as I can remember, but she didn't want to be "a failure of a wife" so she didn't until we where 18 & 19. We need to get rid of this awful stigmata that toxic marrage is still better than divorce.

I was honestly jealous of all the divorced parent kids in my school! My parents stayed together and are still miserable, angry, depressed. As a product of a 'good marriage' (on the outside) I am completely and utterly against marriage as an institute and will never subject myself to that! If I find someone compatible that I love, I can date, exchange rings, throw a party/reilgious ceremony, co-purchase a home, set up a will to leave them anything after I die, and do pretty much all the important stuff I value.

@LDT7Y
@LDT7Y 4 года назад
@@runningsrage5895 Exactly! My parent's have wasted their lives trying and failing to force things to work with the wrong person and (now in old age) the realisation has really hit them hard. Both had the chance to be with someone else that would have made them happy, and they refused 'on principle'. I never want to end up like them. It's horrible to watch now. Some people will argue 'there is no right or wrong person for you' but I strongly disagree with this. Everyone is a mix of different traits and needs a partner that has traits that matches theirs (or at least enough of them to make it work). Too many people decide to marry on the basis of one specific trait (appearance) and ignore everything else. That trait matters far less as you get older, and other traits matter far more. You can also cosmetically fix that trait these days, so it's far more important to make sure you match in other (harder/impossible to fix) areas.

Everyone is saying "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" But, honestly, if the relationship is toxic, the home life will be toxic, and the child will grow up in a toxic environment and become toxic. And, yes, child psychologists will say that divorce is bad for the children, but maybe that's not divorce's fault, so much as the way we handle it? The stigma of coming from a "broken home"? How some parents will, intentionally or not, drag the kid into arguments that the parents shouldn't even be having in earshot of them? The polarization in the house? I think that every civilly divorced couple with a kid should say this, word for word: "We both love you, we just couldn't love each other anymore." Make sure the kid spends enough time with both parents, just not in the same room if you know there's going to be a fight. Divorce may not be the cause of all the mental scarring we attribute to it. Maybe it's just the way we handle divorce and all the stigma around the concept of divorce. Is there a way to commission scientific study on this? If so, tell me! I will pay money for a study done and I don't care if I'm wrong. What I will be mad at is if they completely dismiss my idea and say "That's ridiculous, no one cares anyway!" Because I care. I want to KNOW, will a child have better mental heath if they have parents in a toxic relationship that stay together for them, or parents that divorced out of a toxic relationship and don't have any fights around the kid and make absolutely clear that this whole divorce thing has nothing to do with them? Of course, the control would be a kid who ha parents that are still married and are in a healthy relationship, but that isn't the case for everyone. And, just on a side note, if I were a kid who's parents are staying in a toxic relationship with each other for me, I would feel really bad and I would think that I was the one making the suffering happen, which, if you're in that situation, is completely false. You're not the one making the suffering happen, the stigma against divorce is the one making the suffering happen.

I was only 4 so it wouldn't have been as much as a shock to a child who was say 6 but I was never scarred, we lived with my grand parents till I was about 7 then my mom re married and rented out a house of our own. I live a happy life now and don't even hate my sperm donor I just don't care about him, he was never a parent to me but I guess that's the problem :/

But they still had dinner almost every day at the table and talked about their day. Sometimes my father would go up to the cottage and do his thing on the weekend, while my mother needed her space but they never stopped loving each other. Now they're old in their late 50s and relaxed. 29 years last June and I'm getting married later this month. I told my fiancee we're shooting for 60 years, my grandpa and Nan were married for 57 years but unfortunately for the last three years she was living in a care home but that didn't stop my grandpa because he bought a house next door and visited her almost every day until she passed last November

@bemusedbandersnatch2069 4 года назад
Yeah but at its core marriage is just a societal contract to bone with the intent to make babies and you do generally want a contract for that. Children are expensive and infanticide is frowned upon after all so you want to make it crystal clear that if you bone that person and the two of you make a baby, you two will be paying for it. As long as you've legally agreed to do that in a marriage ceremony witnessed by your community--traditionally a ceremony in which the man promises financial support while the woman promises fidelity--you are free to bone. The advent of birth control and paternity tests have made marriage much more a testament to twue luv than it used to be.

Just about to say, if your parents divorce, they're most likely protecting you from future trauma. It's a good decision. As I know from experience it sucks at first and you feel like you're living two lives, but then you remember your parents fighting and how some of your friends have parents that keep each other up yelling at them. In the end, it's not gonna completely ruin your childhood. It's probably a good call.

Well, coming from a child of a divorced couple, my parent's divorce is one of the best things that ever happened to my siblings and I. I'm happy my brother was young enough when they finally separated that he won't remember the years of unhappy marriage they had. The arguments were explosive and at one point my parents got physical with each other. They tried to stay together because they asked what I, a ten year old little kid at the time, wanted. I can attest to this, same thing for me but I actually begged my parents for them to divorce from a very young age. It definitely took a huge toll on my developmental years as a teenager having to deal with the dysfunctional marriage. Even to today my parents are just starting to go through the process after starting it over 5 years ago starting with a fake restraining order on my mother that made her homeless in the streets with nothing from a 25 year marriage together. Going through a process of the first 2 years of trials, my father, in order take the upper hand, was able to embezzle everything made from the marriage and delay any time due to the US justice system working slow cause of having 3 hearings a year, him canceling them of course. its finally reaching its end and my father will finally have justice done, with many criminal charges that will be placed on him.

Each person has the right to half of the patrimony both people have at the time of the divorce, unless you made a previous agreement otherwise. In the past for sure that meant the (usually) stay at home wife, as part of a society, would get half the stuff the husband worked for. Which seems fair, since the husband and society would usually presure women not to work after marriage.

because it turns what should be a negotiation between mutually accenting parties into a venal winner takes all scramble and that winner is inevitably not the couple but the legal fraternity. It probably makes the woman far more greedy than she otherwise would be, having another party there, in her ear. And with women being more suggestible, this is a recipe for the creation of a monster. "but you can get this, and this" .. "oh you think that he was being fair, but was he reallly fair with you" .. It's true that it's so much harder for the man to get the kids, even when the mother is unfit. This is something that feminism actually aims to fix. Modern feminism is trying to show that 'traditional gender roles,' like the one that says the mother is naturally more nurturing than the father, are not actually correct. It brings both parties to an equal, where they can be judged solely by merit. It's a long way off from actually being equal in real life, but it will hopefully move that way for everyone's sake. A friend of a friend of mine literally had a hatchet thrown at him by his crazy ex, and she still has primary custody. Not sure how that one happened, other than that he doesn't actually have proof that the incident actually occurred. Female abuse to males is another travesty that needs to be taken seriously as well. Men aren't believed, which is just plain wrong.

TBF, alimony is being awarded less and less because most people have had careers before (and after) being married. That said, men still often get a raw deal having to continue paying for a house they don't live in, pay for children they seldom or never get to see, and even when a court rules against the mother, the rulings are difficult to enforce because sending the mother to jail or making her pay a fine would adversely affect the children.

For the people who are saying that divorce is bad because it "harms the children": My parents were divorced when I was around 4 (currently 18). My mother is manic-depressive and is very reluctant to take any medications prescribed to her. This makes her VERY unstable, thus her actions are unpredictable and oftentimes dangerous. If they had stayed married, there is no telling as what more damage she could have caused to myself and the rest of our family. Think more outside the box next time.

whateverworksman Actually in a lot of cases divorces are very traumatizing for the children involved, this may not be a reason to not divorce at all, but this is certainly a reason to handle the divorce well, with as little fighting as possible (especially in front of the children) and with normal contact and cooperation in the upbringing of the child after the divorce. No matter how failed the marriage was, ex partners still need to be able to talk to each other, be able to be near each other and agree on decisions in the upbringing of their child if they don't want to traumatize it. Your scenario is probably quite extreme and doesn't compare to most cases, divorce is indeed bad for the children, just in some cases like yours the parents staying together might be worse.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: American divorce rates and the great accessibility to divorce is the one thing i am most proud of in American society. Back when divorce was damn near impossible and extremely frowned upon, people would be trapped in abusive or unhappy marriages all because they were pressured to marry off quickly and women in particular would go from being under the ownership of their fathers to the ownership of their husbands. "my great grandparents were together for 75 years! they made the rough times work!" your great grandfather beat your great grandmother and she couldn't leave.

Granny was orphaned with five younger siblings to feed and house, Grandpa actually had some land he owned. He married for comfort and pressure from ailing parents to hurry up and marry, without knowing about the kids. She was like 15 and said she was 19, he was 21. They are still married and their never has been abuse. She is not even five feet tall, he’s almost six feet. She wears the pants in the relationship. Not all pressure marriages are bad. @m.ivyluna4632
@m.ivyluna4632 6 лет назад
Matias Mendes plus love is a horrible reason to get married. What many people call love is actually just lust. You fall in and out of lust and love easy enough. That pops up in the average intro to psychology class. It’s well known. Long term relationships will have times when they don’t want to be near each other. But this is not a reason to devorce. “I’m not happy” is such a self centered way to think about a relationship. A marriage is not about what MakeS YOU happy. It’s about what is best for your spouse and your family. If you have a drug problem and your spouse is a good spouse then will bug you about it. This will not make you happy. Everyone knows that your parents will SEEM to make your life a living hell growing up. Then one day you look back and realize they loved you and WANTED to make sure you were safe and happy. And they did not let you go out drinking out of love, not to make you “uncool”. In the same way a good spouse does try to help you become a better person. But being told “your not perfect” is never pleasant. You will not be “happy” if your in the wrong.

Not really, i mean, yes, i have a lot of objections to marriage as an institution, but both marriage and divorces are judicial processes that can be made really simple if the parties involved are mature about it and the system is flexible. People should be able to get married or divorced at will, the problem, in my view, is exceptionalizing these things so much in any way. Either by viewing marriage as infinitely sacred or infinitely stupid.

I agree. The biggest issue in today's world is impatience. We need everything NOW. When we want internet we simply double click an icon on our desktop, and when it's not working we throw tantrums that would make a 2 year old blush. We expect things to working when we want it to be. Things must be in stock at supermarkets. Sold out? Then that poor 15 year old cashier is going to get an earful and a fist in their face for something they can't control. This applies to marriages too. When people becoming unhapy in a marriage, they don't work on fixing the relationship.They don't take time any more to work through their problem. Instead anger and resentment just builds until one or both of the parties snaps and suddenly divorce papers are being spitefully shared.

The largest cause of divorce and separation is financial reasons that lead to arguments. Marriage counsellors know this as a well known statistic. often issues in a relationship can be traced right back to issues with finances. The idea that divorces are to remove a person from a violent or abusive relationship is a good one, but not the usual cause of divorce in modern society. Many countries have a requirement that couples visit a marriage counsellor before divorce to solve issues that have nothing to do with violence for this very reason.

You're forgetting quite a bit and making a very complex issue seem mundane. Financially divorce can be very devastating to both parties and if children are involved it can have a major impact on their lives. Divorce can be a better alternative to an abusive relationship but most causes for divorce are avoidable with counseling. My wife is the child of three divorces and it really tore apart her family...
@zilvoxidgod
@zilvoxidgod 8 лет назад
Except the divorce is NOT what tore up the family. If people are ready for a divorce, the family already fell apart. It's already a bad situation for kids to be in. A home that involves your parents constantly fighting isn't a safe or happy place to be, and is borderline abusive even if none of it gets directed at the kids themselves. The financial issue is definitely real, but it's just as real for single parents who were never married. The issue isn't that divorce ruins your financially, it's that legal costs are almost as absurd as medical bills, and there's no where's near enough support for single parents in our society. That problem could be addressed without trapping people in abusive or unhappy relationships. Counseling isn't a solution unless people *want* it to be, and if people don't want it to be, suggesting counseling is selfish. People's romantic relationships don't revolve around anyone but themselves - not even the kids. And our society shouldn't be built in such a way that kids *need* two parents living in a single household in order to grow up happy and safe, in the first place.

Adam! Take out the Myers-Briggs test! And psychoanalysis! NOW!!!
@ianknight4962
@ianknight4962 8 лет назад
Why? I mean, I see why you might dislike personality tests, people put far too much faith in them. At most they should be seen as a suggestion for a therapist's approach to a patient, but not taken too seriously. But Psychoanalysis was great. Freud set down the groundwork for modern psychology. Was some of his theories batshit crazy? Yes, he lived a long time ago and we have learned since then. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle believed in magic and ghosts to the point of donating thousands to Spiritualists. But some of Freud's work on the field he named Psychoanalysis is key to our understanding the mind. For example, it was Freud who believed what we experienced as children, whether we remember it or not, would have a much stronger effect on the outcome of our lives that that which we experienced in adulthood.
@Gtank74
@Gtank74 8 лет назад
While the Myers-Briggs test is an invalid test, it is highly reliable so I don't disagree with you there. However, modern psychoanalysis (psychodynamic therapy) has been shown to be just as effective as CBT (the current posterchild for evidence-based treatment). Not sure what you mean here.
@Jaqen-HGhar
@Jaqen-HGhar 8 лет назад
The problem with people saying the MBTI doesn't count because people who retake it get different results is that it's only meant to be taken once. If you retake the test you can game the results. It's like the cube game, any test or game that depends on your subconscious can only be performed once.
@YouJustGotAnimated
@YouJustGotAnimated 8 лет назад
MBTI isn't bad and neither is psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis, like someone already said, is pretty effective and has helped. MBTI is just a way of showing how people think, but many people misuse the test and analyze where MBTI has strictly said it shouldn't be analyzed.
@sadgiraffe1914
@sadgiraffe1914 8 лет назад
@Brandon Ottinger Or it could be that people simply change. Your MBTI type isn't the same as your hair color or gender, it's a fluid thing. More of an idea than a scientific theory. And nobody is arguing over the validity of whether someone is introverted or extroverted. The MBTI is not scamming people or making any big claims. Being an INFJ for example just means that you prefer less friends, intuit more than sense, feel more than think, and judge more than perceive. That's it. Nothing deeper. It makes for good conversation and often times people find similarities between each other, but I don't think anybody takes it too seriously. It just gives you an idea of what someones personality might be like. It's more accurate than the retarded "What Star Wars character are you" personality tests, or astrology, but it's not the theory of gravity either.

Actually, studies show that 75% of divorces are due to "boredom in the bedroom." Most marriages nowadays are based on sex, so couples split because their "spark" is gone. Reagan, a former actor, passed the "No-grieves Divorce" Law due to Hollywood's multiple couples routine. Now, being single isn't a bad thing. But marriage isn't something to rush into. And when you do get married, remember divorce is evil. It doesn't just break up a couple, but families, friend circles, and even communities. Marriage is for life. Don't make a promise you can't keep.

***** People seem to forget that "marriage for love" is a relatively new concept that has only been widely put into practice less than 200 years ago. For most of human history people didn't marry their "soulmates". They married for other important things like money, land, power, prestige, and family. Things aren't black and white. Marriage isn't for life because like all other relationships it can grow or fall apart. Marriage isn't necessarily anymore meaningful than any other relationship. It's just a title you put on a couple and couples get together and break up all the time. Things aren't so black and white. You may think you've found your "soulmate" but time changes people and relationships and evolve into something that isn't good for either party. So no. Marriage isn't for life. Marriage is for the duration in which a couple can still hold strong positive feelings for one another. Whether that is a day or a lifetime, staying with someone you no longer care for is torture and unhealthy for all people involved.
@percyross7612
@percyross7612 8 лет назад
***** My whole point was that feelings change. You may believe and want to spend your whole life with someone but time changes people and emotions. What you wanted before you may not want now. You don't "marry for life". You marry for the duration of your affections for each other. Why would you tolerate someone in a marriage if all feelings of romance is gone? Marriage is just another fancy title for a couple. The "until death do us part" is just a formality at this point. It use to mean that the couple literally could not break up unless one of them died. Now it's just tradition.

Yes, but the problem isn't that Divorce is inherently bad - it's that the legal institution and the courts that oversee Divorce are corrupt. There are two kinds of court in American law - courts of law (who are meant to follow the law down to the letter) and courts of equity (who are meant to be 'fair and balanced' to both parties). Divorce courts are Courts of Equity; in theory, the courts are meant to ensure that both parties receive a fair settlement at the end of the proceedings, but in reality the court has no legal accountability (attorneys are allows to openly collude with judges, officials have absolutely no oversight or certification, judges are selected from existing divorce attorneys and people are functionally allowed to openly bribe judges to settle proceedings in a favorable manner) and people are incentivized to openly lie about their former partners for a better settlement. Look - if your marriage isn't working out and your marriage needs to end, then sometimes Divorce is the best way to go. There is absolutely zero shame in needing a divorce and we shouldn't be embarrassed about it. The problem is that we need to reform the courts and official that oversee marriage so that a Divorce proceeding can actually be a amicable proceeding rather than a two-three year grudge match where you're encouraged to lie about your former partner, bribe the judges and navigate a labyrinthian legal code just to move on with your life.

Adam leaves out negative information when it is about minorities. The Black Panthers charged into the California State Legislature fully armed while the legislature was in session. The Black Panthers did a January 6th riot before it was cool. California passed its first gun control law and, for the first time, made it a felony to come into the state Capitol building while armed. Context: This all happened in 1969. 1969 was only two years after the Watts Riots in Los Angeles caused 34 deaths and one year after the nationwide riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The Black Panthers took the rather extreme political stance that black citizens should be armed so that they can fight against racist police. Given the context, this was more or less a pro-rioters stance. Hypothetically, if BLM today tried to take over a state capital building somewhere without strict gun control laws like Kentucky and if the affected legislature passed more gun control laws in response, would that make the state legislators racist?

Oh, I know, right? Children would be much more comfortable with their parents screaming at each other on a daily basis, or their father frequently beating up their mother, than have divorced-yet-happier parents. Obviously. (that was sarcasm btw!)

+ChevaliersEmeraude this only argues for divorce in violent abusive marriages, where the husband should end up in jail. Most of the time people just wanna sleep with other people. THAT ruins the kids.

Oh yeah, I'm sure they would rather be abused and beaten then raised by a single loving parent. I live in Miami and the divorce rate is high here and at least half of my friends are divorced and there all fine because the parents not being in a relationship doesn't make a kids life miserable

good for them. i'm assuming they got divorced because they were unhappy, so getting a divorce is a smart decision. don't be sad. a lot of couples have better a better relationship and stay great friends after they get divorced. even if they don't get along well after they get divorced, all it means is that the divorce was a great decision, because if they don't get along after the divorce, imagine how unhappy they must have been by the time they decided to divorce.

Depends on the people. I don't like it, but since my divorce my child is happier. Not because Mommy and Daddy are separated, but because we're both happier and make sure we work together for her. 2 people being dipshits OUTSIDE the marriage is a different thing. If people would grow up and own their responsibilities, it would be easier.

im also the child of a divorce and it honestly wasnt that bad, to be fair i was 4 when my parents got divorced and all i remember of them being together was fighting and violence. im glad they are divorced they both ended up happier and i got two christmases. win/win. its also better for them to be happy and divorced than miserable and together.

having divorced parents, i already knew this without the facts. when i was really young, i wanted my parents together again. but i ignored or just didn't realize how much of a good thing for me and my parents that divorce was. now my dad is happy with my step mom and my half brother on the way, and i love my mom all the same.

Sour grapes if I was ever heard it. It's call the best of a BAD situation. Hint the word BAD! You morons act as if your parents divorce was like going to Disneyland. You might be able to guard your own emotions in fantasy but it's not fooling anyone else around you.

Kids can be scared by living in an unhealthy household. They could learn that an abusive relationship is normal or that marriage is meant to be miserable. My mother got divorced when I was young, and I think I turned out better because of it. A child shouldn't be raised around an alcoholic, drug abuser.
@thelivingscribe4515
@thelivingscribe4515 8 лет назад
That's ridiculous. A dysfunctional household is worse for the kids. That's how kids grow up emotionally damaged and stunted. If the problems start early enough, the children can start developing Anti-Social Personality Disorder.

DairunCates I admit that. I'm not using any personal evidence of my own because I'm not the average person. I don't handle emotions the same way. What I'm speaking of is the general psychological effects. Here's a collection of studies from the American Psychological Association. www.apa.org/about/gr/issues/cyf/divorce.aspx

Isn't "undoing" a marriage called an "annulment"? Those people wouldn't NEED "no-fault" divorces if they didn't keep rushing their relationships... so many of my friends are married a year after high school, to the person they've dated for months! A lot of them don't even have steady jobs!

My mom has divorced three times, and I can say you become numb to divorces after the second time of losing you're father figure. Anyways, women can be the cause of the divorce too (keep that in mind). She divorced them after she drained them of money and I can't leave her for my father figure because she my real mom and they aren't my biological fathers. Personally I felt like you should have talked about the women too because they can also cause a bad marriage.
