As a mechanic myself, I don't get a chance to work on a lot of project cars. Your run of the mill car has boring powerplants. Thanks for filming a teaching video. Keep up the content sir.

You will note they weren't exactly the same. In the first one he demonstrates the flywheel locked up with a spanner. In the second take the clutch and pressure plate were on.

At 5:38 the chain is not on the right position on the Exhaust camshaft, the light grey chain link should have the Mark in the middle, actually at 5:55 you recognize that...change camera view and at 7:20 the mark is back again in the right position. Great video to explain about SR20, but keep in mind to explain those minor mistakes otherwise someonelse can have some problems :) Nevertheless the Nissan engine manual is always a must have.

Alberto, you just totally skated right by the explanation of those trap doors in the lower sump of the pan. In hard cornering, those little trap doors prevent the oil from going to the sides of the pan and starving the pickup. Without those trap doors and those baffles you’d get a significant drop in oil pressure when cornering. Kind of important in a drift car.

@DodgyBrothersEngineering
@DodgyBrothersEngineering 6 лет назад
There called gates AKA as traps. As you point out they are design to stop surge by stopping the oil rushing away from the pick up tube, while still increasing the oil capacity.

When torquing the exhaust cam should you not have the spanner on the exhaust cam as well instead of intake so it doesn't over stress the timing chain ?

well done BIG BOOST ... quick question on the lack of use of locktite on the tensioner bolt and nut...... I m wondering if you can or should locktite them
@ALBERTOBIGBOOST
@ALBERTOBIGBOOST 6 лет назад
pokythornes I’ve never used thread locker on those bolts on the sr20. They are already a pain to remove sometimes without it. If you add thread locker it might cause it to strip the bolt head removing it since its a allen head
@spiriteddiscoveries3903
@spiriteddiscoveries3903 6 лет назад
I use loctite medium for these, just a dab on the first 3 thread pitches, its kind of like rocker stoppers in my opinion, but not necessary haha

I noticed you said the stock tensioner is hydraulic. Once the engine is running, does the stock Nissan tensioner create additional tension on the chain beyond what it exerts on the chain guide when installing it? I installed a stock tensioner but have not started the engine, only rotated the crank pulley manually. When I rotate the crank pulley, there is no slack in the chain, but when I am approaching TDC (1/4 turn before TDC and 1/4 turn after TDC and the same for Bottom Dead Center) if I stop cranking, I can pull a considerable amount of slack from between the two cam sprockets. I have 20 pins between the sprocket marks and the 10 / 12 o'clock dowel configuration. Is this slack normal at the points I described, or does the tensioner continue to apply additional tension to the chain once the oil has entered it? I can see it has extended and is pressing against the slack side chain guide. I just do not know why there is slack in the chain at the points I described.

Love Big Boost. Another trick I like to use is with the vacuum lines spray a little hair spray on them to help them seal and prevent them from slipping off. After spraying them give them about 12 hrs to set. Works every time. Keep up the great work Alberto! Subscribed for future content

Quick question. When you flip the motor on the engine stand while the head is attached do you need to bleed the lifters afterwards. I’ve heard if they’re flipped upside down they can get air in them

Alberto BIGBOOST so is refreshing the same stripped out block 5 times. I know it's not your engine or car. I'm really surprised he hasn't had the head studs bumped up a size so it doesn't need them unreliable threadserts. And have it sleeved and o-ringed by now.

Sorry to say but it is not a cam position sensor, it is a CAS (crank angle sensor). While the two are directly related, they are not the same thing. One is for determining the position of the cam, the other is for determining the position of the crank. I also note that you didn't re-check the cam chain tension once you rotated the engine. Rotating the intake cam gently clockwise will put the slop back in between the two cams. Without this step there was no point to rotating the engine. Think you will also find the first one is probably classified as crank scraper rather than a windage tray. Since its primary function is to shear the oil off the spinning crank, the second one is definitely a windage tray.

Good video.. I just cant see how that timing chain tensioner will be better than the original one. like when the engine warms up the tension will be diffferent or when the chain wears slighty in a few years. there are loads of aftermaket parts for these engines but a load of them are crap and ruin engines but not saying that brand is bad.
