Adam Savage simulates extreme WWI air combat by putting "lasers" on Peter Jackson's WWI planes! Subscribe to Discovery Australia for more great clips: bit.ly/DiscoveryAustralia
@@jonathanallard2128 Nah. The style of SW is definitely based on WW1-era battleships, weapons, artillery and airplanes. With Han Solo's blaster literally being a WW1 Mauser C96 and the stand-in dogfighting scenes in the draft version of New Hope being archival footage from biwing dogfights. There are some individual WW2 elements, but most of it screams WW1.
If they made a televised sport out of simulated WWI plane dogfights with different teams and planes representing different cities or places? Oh I'd watch every week.
I was thinking the exact same thing😂 We know he already has the fedora....makes you wonder if hes got the houndstooth, satchel and umbrella. I wouldnt put it past him.
I musst think directly about indiana jones 3. Jones senior: "junior i dont know how to say it to you but they got us" after he destroyed theire own tailwing😂
If you haven't seen it the documentary ''They Shall Not Grow Old'' directed and produced by Peter Jackson is excellent. He managed to bring to life the grainy old film footage adding colour etc. He added sound and employed lip readers for example to fill in the blanks. (None of the original footage from WW1 has any sound.) Totally worth a watch!
@@Gunny1971 Mass scale electric vehicles that don't require gas to run, not polluting our cities anymore, possible redo of people that are paralyzed and have other disabilities thanks to Neuralink (and its really huge, medical chips from universities have like 100 electrods, neuralink has 3078), and most importantly SpaceX - he awakened tens of commercial space companies that are helping improve life on earth massively and SpaceX alone after Starship is completed will make it possible to leave mining our beautifull Earth alone and don't pollute her anymore thanks to space mining. Also colonizing Mars will increase our chances of survival as a species. Thats a lot of things lol.
This needs to be a competitive sport! 2v2 or 3v3 simulated dogfights. It would be a dream come true to see that in person, and even better that people aren't actually dying.
This NEEDS to become a competitive sport, imagine air force pilots from all over the world gather to do this type of competitive re-enactment almost like the olympics mixed with the red bull air race
It's awesome that they are keeping this part of history alive. I know it was for fun and that's why the 'lead' their shots but that was awesome! Thank you Mr.Jackson for preserving those historic planes
I was coming to ask if they have to lead their shots and what kind of telemetry is involved in that since lasers are way faster than bullets. Do you know?
The closest film to that was ‘Aces High’ which starred Malcolm McDowell. It did an okay job at portraying just how dangerous & ultimately short the lives of the aircrews in the early days of air to air combat.
you can build them in your garage :) or under a tent, including most the engine works on them. . . and the complete specs and plans are out there. . .there is also a lil uptick in the 1/6 builds and such, not the full sized plane but still able to be directly piloted.
I had the Fokking pleasure to work with Peter Jacksons team in NZ on the Hobbit premiere. From everything I experienced from a ground level workers POV, I would have jumped at the chance to work with them - and I would have to commute from 'straya! From the geeking out seeing the back of house of Weta workshop, to the infectious enthusiasm of the craftspeople working on various aspects of his projects, he established a creative empire in his own country. Bezos and Musk can claim 50yo achievements paid for by other people, but a guy with mutant muppets and seagull threatened zombies created an opportunity for creative expression with a kiwi flavour. kudos to my ANZAC bros!
The Fokker had three wings because they're also shorter. The engineers wanted shorter wings, but in order to keep the same amount of lifting force, it had to have the same amount of wing area, so they decided to have three wings. Short wings mean it's way easier to roll, making it much more effective in combat due to its high agility. I think it was a very slow plane though
To those new to WWI Aerial Combat the Triplane would have dived from very high , with the sun behind him , into the top of the RE8 and unleashed his Machine Guns at the pilot, gunner and Engine . But they probably couldn't stress the wings like that.
Aside from the fact that lasers can't take into account ballistics, these pilots really were just flying in a very simple flight path. Not really "dogfighting". Looks looks super fun, what an experience
From the video they didn't do much in terms of energy fighting or even turning much to "shake off" the pursuer. I don't know, maybe most dogfighting tactics were developed in ww2? And yes I would love to see immelman 😆
@@Bunny-zn7ke probably, but that can only help so much you still need a way to prevent mid-air collisions so risky maneuvers would probably not be allowed, it would be just like this..
I'm a licensed private pilot and glider pilot. These old aircraft are notoriously difficult to fly and the maneuvers performed in aerial combat are far more complex and disorienting than you'd think. You need specific training just to perform solo aerobatics... now imagine doing what is essentially uncoordinated "group" aerobatics in temperamental and difficult to control powered kites....
As I build my own 1:1 SPAD XIII, I'm discovering that at least SOME of the Fokker fuselages construction departed from the wood beam and wire bracing that was de rigueur in that era (as was the case with the SPAD), and went instead with a welded steel fuselage frame. And of course, that technique became more and more prevalent as aircraft design evolved.
That laser tag system should be fun while it's mounted on a FPV flown model aircraft :D I would play that all day long! Wicked video, so cool to see those old birds in the sky!
Wow, this is crazy and awesome. I would be anxious about betting my life on one of those old privately-owned planes performing maneuvers through the air.
in reality all those fuselage hits from behind and beneath could go through the length of the plane and hit the crew and engine but in this simulation count as non-lethal.
Also an engine hit isn't really lethal. They could just glide down - depending on which side they landed on, they would either be captured or could be up flying again the next day.
Wait this is Masterton. My hone town that I grew up in. I basically lived on that airfield and learned to fly there and helped build one of the hangars.
There has to be a work-around for this. Motion tracking camera inside/near the tip of the barrel locking onto infared reflectors? The problem I supposed would be making the proper calculations
Adam and/or pilot died in a first round so they could never learned to work as a team. Fokker pilot could probably land with broken engine and fly again. So i think it's the Fokker pilot that won.
@@mikeyoung9810 Yes. And I think that the RE 8 crew not learning to work as a team was actually a factor here. They did get very little training before going to combat.
