Adam Savage's Knights of Ren Cosplay, Part 1

For last year's Silicon Valley Comic Con, Adam invited prop builder Darrell Maloney (aka Broken Nerd) to San Francisco to spend the week collaborating with him on his cosplay. Their idea: to create the Knights of Ren characters that were only briefly seen in The Force Awakens. Darrell kicks things off with his 3D modeling of the helmets, and brings the prints to the cave for a packed week of building. Let's follow along!

there is no amount of money or jewels i would pay to just have a simple conversation with him much less an item from the show. My favorite part about him is that he never seems to show off in a sense the money or value something cost. Despite in my opinion being one of the coolest people on this planet, he always carries a sense of humbleness with him.

Lol right. Like half way through, Adam comes back from the fabric store with two arm-loads of fabric for the project. I can only imagine how inspired he was walking around in there searching for the perfect pieces/patterns.

Depending on the plastic/resin, the particulates may not be that bad, but spray paint is pretty much always bad

PLA (that was used for the 3D printing) is a bioplastic and is both biodegradable and non-toxic.

Tested Website and Tested RU-vid are different Things. They were probaly on the Tested Website but only for costumers wo bought Premium membership. And so now they also here for all people even without Premium

I think I know why it went up yesterday. His Knights of Ren cosplay was done for Silicon Valley Comic Con in 2018 and SVCC 2019 just started yesterday. He's probably walking the floor, giving a talk, or signing autographs as I write this.

You knew the term without ever thinking about it. They call men “Tailors” if making men’s clothing. Seamster is a term I’ve not hear of. Maybe it’s a term given to those who make unisex clothes.

Using a sewing machine is pretty easy once you know the basics. It looks complicated, but its mostly just making sure thread is threaded properly

It’s amazing how 3D printing takes cosplaying prop making to the next level imagine what the old school cosplayers had to do to get those results I imagine super time consuming and it being very expensive.

There are filaments compounded with metal powders or wood and many other things. I just felt smart and had the idea to 3D print the wax models for lost wax casting. Turns out, products for it already exist. So, if you want to cast something very complicated, 3D print it in wax and then lost wax cast it. Maybe it helps someone out to know that the tech is out there. :)

The Kendo garment is called a gi (gee, g sound from get). It’s a traditional martial arts uniform used in karate, judo, etc. the front wraps left over right, that’s why you are seeing the tie hanging off the front. It used to tie the front together and should be inside he front, not showing on the outside.

not sure if Darrell is reading the comments but grab yourself a filament run out sensor and if firmware is available to have auto resume on power outage you'll love it. Also, you can measure the height on the print that the filament wrapped around itself and broke you can sink the model into the bed in cura or whatever slicer you use and only print from that point up. This will allow you to glue or join the two pieces together without reprinting the whole model a second time. Great job on the helmets and other bits though!

The way that I’ve gotten sleeves to turn out pretty okay is to line up the seam with either 6 or 12 o’clock on the armhole seam( armpit seam ) and then make sure to flatten what is left of the seam allowance to allow for even and non bumpy sewing.

But when you’re flattening our the extra seam allowance fabric, flatten it out like an open book, not one way or the other.

Darrel needs to seriously consider run-out sensors for his 3d printers if he has not already. It can be a life saver for when things don't go quite as planned for those super-long prints.

i like the idea of using the tape instead of pressing the seams for the under jacket edge. Although be careful when taping, if you are going to be sewing through it. Some tape glues transfer to the needle an can get everything all gummed up. ( i managed to total 3 needles trying to sew 4 inches of glued velcro into the fly of a pair of work trousers :( )

The fact that Adam just about finished half of the soft parts for the Monk costume before Darrel even began painting the hard parts just goes to show that making a 3d printed piece is 90% sanding and prepping and 10% painting and finishing.
