One of Adam's longstanding cosplay goals is finding a way to stay cool under his costumes while wearing them all day. He's tried a variety of cool suits and hacked-togethered water-circulation units, and today he enlists the help of engineer and scientist Kipp Bradford to build a compact refrigeration system that he can wear. In fact, the system they build is a replica of the cooling unit in the spacesuit simulator used in NASA's HI-SEAS experiment!

Hey Adam! I've always loved your show! Finally, I have insight on your topic! I'm a Chicago HVAC/R Technician that works on all sorts of wonderful Refrigeration applications across the city of Chicago for medical facilities and plastic injection mold facilities. I've never seen such a small compressor and it was so interesting learning the history behind it's inception. Work has been slow due to COVID-19, but if a chiller at a facility breaks down then we need to be able to help them and expose ourselves in heavily populated plants. It's the most rewarding thing being able to fix a problem for the hard working people on the frontlines making vaccines or producing life saving equipment needed to keep the virus at bay. I'll share this video with some of my teachers and classmates at the 597 Training Center, because who doesnt love Adam Savage's One Day Builds??

One little thing they didn't talk about too much you can see at 38:26 and 40:35. That yellow line is flowing a little bit of nitrogen through the pipe as they braze, displacing oxygen inside the pipe that would otherwise turn to soot and contaminate your compressor oil. On tiny systems like this you just fill the system with nitrogen and let it sit there, on larger systems you want nitrogen gently flowing the whole time.

I know this is a few months old. But when I was in the military. As a m1a1 crewman. They had upgraded the tanks to help cool the crew in extreme heat. As most know there is no cooling inside. So the military upgraded the system to support a cooling vest to keep the teams from over heating inside the oven aka tank. Just hope it keeps you cool Adam.

Adam, from the "finger accident" vid you said something that's been noodling around in my head today, namely "the recognition about how much the stress and anxiety are wearing (wailing?) upon us". I do hope you get around to unpacking that and sharing. That being said, this episode with Kipp was exactly the escape I needed today. It was so refreshing to listen to someone so articulate, yet humble, explaining not just the theory or process, but history as well for the build. Best hour of my day. As many others have already said, please bring him back to collaborate on another project some day.

I want to thank Kipp so very much. He quantified the body cooling needs very well (-100w and non hair areas). I want to make one for my experimental airplane!! This is why I searched and found this video. Super jealous of the high quality tools there!! 40 yrs as an engineer I enjoyed Kipps explanation as clear & accurate, but simplified (appropriately) sometimes. Varying 134a mass flow, compressor speed, and fan speed effects nicely touched on. I installed a few hundred AC systems in VW's back in the 70's then after the MSME, fully understood.

Refrigeration has always been fascinating to me. I remember as a kid and asking my dad nonstop questions about how refrigerators work while he was working on our air conditioner on a summer day in the southeast. I remember getting to the limit of his knowledge, he got disgruntled and said "I dont know! Ask your teacher!" I took that as a challenge... I think it's good to encourage kids to not stop asking questions, even if you can't answer them yourself.

Highly recommend looking for a copy of "The Secret Life of Machines" series 1 episode 5 about the refrigerator. The series came out in '88 in the UK and I am not sure there are any "legit" sources, but Tim Hunkin, the creator and host, has openly condoned sharing these episodes if you can find them. So informative and charming. I'm looking forward to showing these episodes to my son when he's old enough to understand them.

This guy is one of my favorite guests on the show. He communicates in some very similar ways as Adam. I wanted to go to school for engineering but never had the confidence. I like some of the ways that he explains his thoughts and views on theoretical engineerin vs experience. NOT because I want to champion the garage geeks but because I love knowing that there are engineers who are so honestly interested in being creative and have such capacity to do it. Those kinds of people are who I've always been excited to work with. When someone imagines project and then someone can tell them it is possible, it's the engineers who can guarantee that its possible, sometimes. There are people who are simply fascinated by creating and and so many separate moving parts, people. If I were to say, direct a home movie, Imagine the difference if I had a neighbor who was an engineer. It would be the difference between a green-screen background and someone saying, " hey have you been to home depot lately? I think we can do this". I love this show.

I had the idea to make a personal AC suit when I was a kid, almost 20 years ago. I obviously never got to make it, as it happened with practically all of my ideas and projects. It was (and sometimes it still is) really frustrating not to be able to even try to make my ideas reality. We didn't have much money at all then, and my parents weren't really supportive of that kind of stuff. It's great to see it made even now. It kinda gives me some sort of closure.

Did you also come up with an amazing invention then get crushed when an adult breaks it to you that it's already been invented a long time ago? Lol I remember that being so frustrating, but it also made me take more time to learn about history and where ideas originate... my parents always said that between all my siblings I was the only one who wanted a new toy solely to take it apart and figure out how it works. I still do that today honestly.
