Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Wire Storage Solution!

Adam tackles a shop shelf build that he's been putting off for a long time--finally reorganizing his loose wire storage that sits above his Sortimo hardware boxes. It's a chance for him to implement his philosophy for a storage system that houses and dispenses rolls of wire--that doesn't mount the spools along a dowel. As you'll see, it's a solution that's as elegant as it is satisfying!

Thanks for the kind words about the Detroit Fox! For years (decades) until my recent retirement, I was the chief engineer at The Fox, and quite proud of the work we did to restore and maintain the country's largest "movie palace". When you and Jamie were there, attempts were made to go through channels and offer you a tour of our archaic technology (live-front slate switchboards, huge ventilation fans, air washers, etc.) but it was not to be. Often such offers never make it through the gauntlet of officialdom, and we were too polite to approach either of you directly, as you were obviously busy. Que sera, sera! But if you ever have any questions about the building or its 1928 technology, you have but to ask. Stay safe.

We had a similar set up behind the front desk of electrical shop, where I worked as an apprentice electrician. I don't know if you'd need it. But we had a *1 meter ruler* stuck just above our cabinet, at chest height. To measure the lengths of wire the customer asked for.... Plus we had a thin whiteboard strip under each roll. So when it was replaced. You change the number to whatever amount was on a fresh roll. 10m/25m etc.. And changed it as you cut lengths off for the customers. It's hard to judge what's left on a roll, because of how it's wound. You don't know when you're close to needing a new roll. Just a thought.. Great video as always.

When is the library ladder build coming? I see the wall storage going higher and higher!
@BenjaminStaver
@BenjaminStaver 3 года назад
Oh man! The ladder would need to be hinged in the middle so that it could go around the corners of the single track running all the way around the room. That would be fascinating to watch him build since it would test the limited space of the cave.

I wish I was as happy about anything the way Adam is happy about finding a better way to store his spools of wire.
3 года назад
Love the solution but I think I've got one thing to add (that you may not experience for a while). With the wire tail dispensing holes you absolutely have a nice clean point to grab the wire and pull just what you need however as that spool unwinds the tail's natural position will change from where it uncoils, this will make it more difficult at points in the spools life to dispense wire. Also when you replace the spools with new spools if the thickness of spool is different you may wind up finding that the holes are not in a useful position for a specific spool you shelve. My solution would be to remove the holes but in place leave a slot the entire length of the shelf (or many slots along the length like a dotted line). This way the spools can dispense as needed, you can still have your tidy tails and you don't run across the problem of the holes being misaligned.
@MB-zj3er
@MB-zj3er 11 месяцев назад
I had the same thought. If you could make a bar with eyelets that move back and forth that might even be better, and they could be moved to accommodate different spools as you change them out.
@dominikw.4752
@dominikw.4752 3 года назад
I think it is a good solution. However, I would cut away the bottom edge of the troughs so that dust can fall through. Otherwise, a lot of dirt will quickly accumulate in it in a well-used workshop.
@Chungustav

@pixl3l

Agreed, or/and allow troughs to be lift-out removable for thorough cleaning.
@michaelzdanis3979
@michaelzdanis3979 3 года назад
Since the fronts are clear, and the spools lift out easily, shouldn't be too hard to run the vacuum over the troughs every once in a while. With the open bottoms, the stuff from the top trough will drop to the second, from top two to the third and so on. Think they'll still get dirty.

I think about this sometimes, is there some easy to implement solution beyond discipline that might also be useful in itself to justify it's existence taking up space. Especially for shared spaces where space/utility ration needs to be high. Such as putting sloped facades on top of everything, or lots of rubber snakes to teach identification, or gluing down plastic sleeves that have expensive cards in them.

My college radio engineering shop has all the spools of wire we needed on vertical rods and pipes depending on the size all the way up to 2 foot diameter reels. And then one day we got one extra 3 foot spool of heavy coax cable for a rooftop satellite dish (for a Pacifica news feed) with no where to put it. After a week of tripping over that we just said screw this and ran the wire up to the roof even though the dish wasn't getting installed for a month (the dish had to live disassembled in the back hallway). It was satisfying to throw out the empty spool.

Adam, you need only two more things to make your wire storage perfect... Attach a self adhesive ruler to the edge of the each shelf. That audio match of the saw spinning down at the end of the first time lapse was awesome. Nice work, Norm!

*this might have been addressed on a previous episode but how is your shop set up (within reason) to deal with the possibility of earthquake damage?* *other than the mess and security how are things stored and separated that reduce any potential hazards that night result?...just curious*

Any time I improve my storage in any way, I get just as giddy as Adam does. I know that feeling. I know it well.

I thought of this wire storage scheme also, but did not think of the wire feed hole. Thanks for that. Just needs paint and decoupage.

Cool idea! Perhaps using a long piece of brush-type weatherstripping to hold the tails instead of holes in the palstic would get you a little more flexibility with the type and number of spools. Would also be easier to feed through the tail when replacing a spool.

Adam wouldn't I be usefull to design ur shop around a scaled down potentially cubic shipping container. Like draws, boxes, cabinets all stacked on top of eachotegr on top of a wheel sleds that all have corner connectors locking it together like shipping containers. It would mean every component of your shop would be modular and like Lego's. It would also mean u can convert an Infinite amount of vertical space into horizontal space which of u think about it is the ultimate goal of shop infrastructure.

What goes into a "hat repair and maintenance" box? I own a variety of hats and hadn't thought to create a maintenance kit 😄

Adam, thank you so much for inviting us to view the Craftsman Builder struggle. If it even is. You make it look so easy. Saving my life with every episode you put out man. Thanks for giving us hope. Giving me hope.

Anyone else suddenly notice John Carpenter’s “The Thing” hanging from the ceiling and impulsively shout a warning to Adam, before realising it was just a harmless prop?
