I love the lady's explanation about how it fitted Jim's hand. It explains how Kermit was always such a profoundly expressive puppet. Would also love to see a similar video about the Dark Crystal.
One of the key things that Muppets did differently from other puppets and especially marionettes was that they actually *treated* the felt construction as malleable, rather than just pretending it was a hinge- so rather than just flapping kermit's mouth open and shut, for instance, he would actually scrunch up his hand to convey disgust, letting the creasing of the fabric and whatnot do all of the acting for him
Big thumbs up for the curator. I mean the depth of her knowledge shows this show was her and her team's 'baby'. Nice to see so much passion. Inspiring show and tour.
@@TheSareus No way, she was feeding off of his energy too. He is clearly interested and she is telling him things he didn't know.. she's a museum curator! Everyone is having a good time.
TheSareus Dude the good job of a museum curator is to talk and share their knowledge. She paused repeatedly to listen to his feedback but she’s the expert and she was clearly feeding into Adams energy.
I was named after Kira, from "The Dark Crystal " and his films and shows, were a huge part in my creative growth, and musical inspiration. Jim Henson is responisible for shaping and fueling millions of children's imaginations. Thank you Jim!
This Might've been two years ago, but have you seen the Netflix 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance' thought you may want to know if you haven't heard about it
Oh my goodness they molded Frank Oz's hands for the Swedish Chef! That is just awesome. The whole exhibit looks amazing and it's wonderful to see it through Adam's eyes with his joy and excitement.
Me either! He was and will ALWAYS BE A GENUIS AND A MASTER! I have no qualms in telling you that I LITERALLY SOBBED WHEN HE DIED. Rest in peace Jim. You fans miss you still
Me Either Jim Was Not Just a Great Guy A Genius And Also A Great Legend But He Was A great Infulence For Many People as Becoming Puppeteers And That’s What Kids And Adults Alike Would Really Like To Keep Jim Henson’s Legacy Alive
It’s Adams’ childlike thirst for knowledge, mixed with his love of nostalgia that makes him such a fun person to watch. I hope to meet him when he comes to Memphis with Michael Stevens.
My very first drawing as a toddler was of Ernie and it shocked my mom, because she could tell who it was. I grew up in the 80s and early 90s so I was all about sesame street and the muppets . I even remember watching the muppet babies on Saturday mornings! As a mom now it's been delightful sharing Jim Henson with my kids . This makes my heart super happy! Which is exactly what I needed after watching Big Bird sing at Jim Henson's funeral due to a RU-vid algorithm. I was totally crying my eyes out but then this popped up and I feel much better. I need to check this place out. The magic of Jim Henson is strong and I can't wait to experience it in person. "Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers and me!"
Thank you for sharing. My grandfather was a professional photographer and took professional black and white portfolio head shots of a few of the puppets, including of course, Kermit. I think this was back in the late 70's or early 80's. I remember him telling me how much fun he had working on the project and how surprised he was at the puppet construction.
Steven Kamradt Ahoyhoy There, fellow RU-vidrino. Congratulations. That's neat, I love the nineteen eighties. I also love the Jim Henson puppets, including Dinosaurs and ALF.
@@WesTheHunter YES and Disney isn't stopping there. They've destroyed George Lucas' legacy, Stan Lee's legacies, as well! It shows that their "creativity" is GONE! They buy and suck the money and life out of EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT/LEGACY/FRANCHISE they get!
@@EdsterIII I must say The Special Editions were Lucas' idea so he technically damaged his own legacy, The original trilogy was only so good because so many people poured their life and soul into it. Where as the prequels were all lucas, not that they were bad at all.
Physical puppets are so much more tangible on screen vs digital animations. My kids, being used to digital characters are so mesmerized by puppets. I wish there was more puppet movies again like dark crystal and labyrinth.
Life is like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing. Keep pretending. We've done just what we set out to do. Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you.
Geeksmithing yeah, that and this is a really important "thing" for anyone in the creative industry, Jim Henson is a Legend and anyone should feel honored and in amazement walking through this exhibition. Truly amazing seeing what those people did.
It's sad, but the best example of the two sets of people Jim created was at his memorial service, especially when the performers and muppets sing his favorite songs. On stage, there are about 15 humans, and 40 people. It's amazing.
On top of all the things mentioned about how impressive Caroll Spinney’s Big Bird performance was, it should also be noted that his monitor wasn’t a POV, it was a feed from a stage camera so he was watching himself and judging his movements off of that.
I am so honored that I got to be one of the crowdfunders for this incredible project! Although small, I hope I was able to help in some way! Kermit is my spirit animal!
jeommy kin Thanks! I was in the hospital a lot when I was little and between Kermit & the Muppets and Reading Rainbow.. it got me through a lot of boring days/months! Plus Kermit reminds me of my dad! 😄😄😄 I kinda owed it to Jim Henson to help in any little way I could!
Adam, would just like to say thank you for this video. I know that at my age(70) I could never get to see such an exhibition because I live in UK, to see this knowing you grew up with it and I remember it very fondly and Fraggle rock and my wife loved the Muppet film of Christmas carol. Totally brilliant work done by Jim and Frank to keep us entertained.
I wish they had focused a bit on the characters Jim made for Fraggle Rock, namely Cantus and Travelin' Matt Fraggle. Heck, they should do a revisit of the whole series and characters. If I'm ever in New York again, I've got to visit this museum!
He was a dreamer/inventer/pioneer. He was a dreamer but he s not the only one. Dreaming about a world in peace. Serveral spichies living toghether. Harmonie and love. I feel so much love. RIP Jim. You went waaaay to soon
As much as the CGI muppet Waldo sucked, the idea of real-time puppeteering of a CG character with your HANDS was both ahead of its time and sorely underutilized today. There's a lot of mocap, sure, but there's very little mocap-puppetry actually working facial features or other things with people's hands.
I was misty-eyed for the first 20 minutes but then I lost it when they showed Sarah's and Jareth's costumes. Although I do wish they had Sarah's princess ball gown instead.
This vlog brought back sooo many memories of my childhood. Sometimes you see something like this and when you are young you don't realize how much time and technology and love that was put into making it all. Thank you Adam for sharing this magic with us
Adam's excitement was super contagious. I already love Jim Henson, but the enthusiasm made it even better. I love seeing other people who adore what they are getting to do!
Back in the 80s there was a program for the Mac (an ‘INIT’ if you know what that was) that would hack the Finder so that whenever you dragged a file to the trash can, Oscar would pop up and sing “I love trash!”... fun times... 😜
YES! I was a student aide and ran the Mac lab in high school, and installed that on every computer we had. Didn't tell anyone about it. The next day after a few kids discovered it, the news ran like wildfire and soon everyone in the school was talking about it. A couple of Special Ed. kids spend their whole hour in the lab just creating folders and deleting them just to see Oscar. That's all you could hear coming out of the lab for the next few weeks... "Oh, I love traaaash!"
I loved everything Henson put out. I never missed a Fraggle episode and actually bought the DVD set last year. I saw The Dark Crystal in the theatre and it was the most awesome thing I saw. and to this day I still watch Labyrinth at least once a year. I think I have three copies of it on DVD. Edit: I forgot to mention that my brother couldn't watch The Dark Crystal because the Skeksis scarred the crap out of him.
Although I haven't watched a whole ton of these shows, seeing the exhibit being explained and toured in such an enthusiastic and joyful manner is incredibly interesting and amazing, and seeing Adam getting so enthusiastic and giddy with excitement is truly amazing and so interesting to see!
The deaths of Henson and Mercury hit me hard when I was young. Henson still inspires me so so much. Thank you for this Adam and crew. I love geeking out on all your videos but this one really got to my heart.
Yup. If Adam had been of working age in Jim's time, instead of Mythbusters, we might have known him as one of the best puppeteers of our age. (Oh glorius what-ifs)
I've never watched the muppets or sesame street... but I have watched this 3 times now! Adam's excited energy is so infectious, he truly looks like his childhood dreams are coming true!
This is the best thing I have ever seen. The pure joy in Adams face I know echos not just my own but I'm sure everyone who loved the Muppets and what Jim Henson created
Plus some parts of the animatronics were sold online. The show "Totally Obsessed" has a woman who bought two animatronic heads of Leonardo and Michelangelo.
there could never be enough respect given to jim henson for the amazing feats he gave to children worldwide!!! truly a remarkable human being. an accomplishment beyond words! i am in awe!
Big thanks for making and posting this video. Jim Henson was a huge part of my childhood. This does such a good job celebrating & exploring his work. I hope I get a chance to see this exhibit at some point.
WikdSeafood The (now) 30 people running the Muppets division at Disney, the ones responsible for firing Steve Whitmire. They crap all over Henson's legacy, sad to say.
Adam is the exact right person to properly showcase this exhibit, because his clear LOVE of the muppets, the technical understanding to appreciate the hard work of it all, his experience makes it so that you can really see it through a new perspective
This is still one of my very favorite episodes of Tested. I grew up with Jim Henson influencing my life. If possible I would go back in time and thank him for what he really meant to me. What a wonderful human. I still miss him every day.
I'm kinda glad to see a lot of Jim's work is on display in an exhibit like this one. Cause Jim work with many different people in Hollywood mainly in the 70's and 80's even with his own company. Plus a lot of what Jim did was very helpful for Hollywood even with the animatronic puppets.
Im going to cry like a baby. Thank you! I hope to see this in person one day. Labyrinth and Dark Crystal were my favorite movies when i was a kid and they influenced me so much. I can recite Labyrinth to you script for script from memory.
This exhibit was amazing to go an see. This video does not show it's full extendt and I encourage all to go and see for yourselves. It was one of my highlights of visiting New York
I never thought about how the best pairings of Muppets were always Jim and Frank..Ernie & Bert, Kermit and Piggie, Kermit and Fozzie, Rowlf and Fozzie. They played so well off each other ❤️
Jim was so beyond his time. My Kermit and I will always remember 💗 Thank you for sharing this Museum with us. Not everyone can travel to see this amazing work. 💞 It's not easy being green💚
I grew up with the Muppets and adored the Muppet Show. When the Muppet Exhibition came to Seattle in 2013 I made certain I got to visit it and attended an evening “workshop” where Jane Henson spoke to a live audience. After she finished her talk, I left the auditorium and approached her in an open atrium area. I told her how much my mom and I loved the Muppet Show and showed her an old rubber Cookie Monster finger puppet that I’ve had since the early 1970’s. Before I shared with her my story and adoration of the show, she told me that many people had expressed to her how “stupid” they thought the show was. I couldn’t believe it. I explained to her that my mom and I absolutely loved it and how Jim greatly influenced my life with his creativity and humor. My mom passed away in 2008 and supported my love for Cookie Monster and the muppets. Every Sunday night whenever the Muppet Show would come on, she would yell out, “Lisa! It’s started!” I would run upstairs and sit beside her to enjoy a half hour of craziness with delightful, spunky, and feisty animated characters. I vividly recall our special tradition began when I was 12 to 17 years old. I think my mom would have been happily pleased to know that I had an opportunity to meet Jane Henson and that I got to talk to her privately to share with her how much of a positive influence Jim and the muppets had on my life. Side note: In the early 1990’s, I considered doing puppetry in my mid 20’s but ended up using those talents doing church youth work then later computer graphics. When Jim passed away in 1990, I was 26 and was traveling the country in a Christian drama company. His loss hit both my mom and I pretty hard. God definitely has a purpose. ♥️✝️♥️
I was born in 1996, Jim died six years before I was born. But his works and his shows were part of my childhood. I grew up on Sesame Street every morning before school. My parents had the Muppet Show on DVD along with the movies. I'm 25 as of this comment, and I still get a good laugh out of them whenever I see them. Seeing all this felt so great to someone like me. Thanks again Mister Savage for showing this, made me feel like a kid again ^w^
The Latin-American version of Sesame Street also has their own big bird, Abelardo. He even appeared in an actual episode of Sesame Street. There are also a few other characters like Pancho and Lola. It’s so interesting to see the variations from version to version.
So cool to see that Jim was on the front line starting to innovate with digital puppets. Makes you wonder what the world that Pixar/Disney now fills would look like had Jim had more time to work on it.
As I type this, a tear has rolled down my cheek a very close friend inspired me in many ways and left in awe at times at just how funny, charming and amazing they were, thank you Adam for sharing and reminding me of a dear, dear friend who is no longer here
I'd be perfectly happy if there was a museum strictly for Labyrinth and Dark Cyrstal. See Brian Froud's art and see all of the puppets, sets, and costumes and then take a class on how the puppets are made like the Creature workshop! That would be awesome!
Ever since I watched the defunct tv series on Jim, I have a bigger love of puppets then when I was younger, also I knew half the things she said in the video but I loved all the things I learned!!!
Wow, incredible, still remember exactly where I was when I heard of Jim's passing, I can vividly remember starring at the dinning room table in my house and feeling a personal sense of loss, very few other people's passing had affected me like that up till then, the only other event was the death of John Lennon.
