I wrote the script for this video one week ago. In that time, Adam Wainwright beat both the Orioles and Brewers to reach 200 wins. NEVER question the power of the Jolly Jinx. Congratulations to Waino!

I don't see how that one win to go from 199 to 200 means anything. We put too much importance of multiple of 5, 10, 100 etc. Its basically just 0.5% better than 199. He should retired before the end of the season, as otherwise that 200 wins will always have a mental asterisk in people's minds.

I'm kind of surprised that you didn't mention Albert Pujols' chase to 700 home runs last year, because that's probably the most relevant example of a player coming back for one final season to chase a milestone. Even well into the 2022 season, it didn't look like King Albert would hit the mark, but he caught fire and finally did, and then retired satisfied after reuniting with his old club and catching his whale. Waino, Albert's teammate for 8 seasons and friend for many more, saw how successful his chase went and decided to go around one more time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I really hope he gets there-he's been pitching well the last month or so and just picked up that win against the O's.
@BondandBourne
@BondandBourne 8 месяцев назад
I was just thinking about Pujols going after 700 home runs. Then again prior to going back St. Louis, none of us were thinking 700 was possible for him. Once it became clear he had a chance, he at least said he was retiring regardless if he reached 700 or not.
@mattforbes221
@mattforbes221 8 месяцев назад
I don’t think Albert was chasing 700, I think that was more about the storyline of Yadi, Albert and Waino (oops) walking off the field together. The conversation wasn’t “oh man as long as Albert keeps going he’ll get 700” it was “man that would be cool but cmon there’s no way”

I will always remember Chipper Jones' final season. He was a machine till the end, posting an OPS+ of 124 in his age 40 season. It was good enough for him to maintain his career .300/.400/.500 slash line. I remember attending a bobblehead night that honored him during his final season, and he hit two home runs that night. He had one of the better final seasons I can think of.

1 bad season in the end doesn't erase the success he had in his incredible 18 year long career. Did Griffey Jr's last 2-3 seasons tarnish his legacy? Heck no!
@T_K7
@T_K7 8 месяцев назад
Junior wasn't blatantly chasing counting stats though, and if you talk to people in the area it's not terribly hard to find some who are still upset with how he ended his career, despite Seattle clearly not playing for anything in 09-10. I don't follow the Cards but Waino does look to be leaving a blemish on his career, not because of erasing past success but rather because he's ending on a large (if unimpactful) string of failure.

The Cards were relying on Waino to be the ace of the pitching staff... which was not ideal. And the poor play from the Cards hasn't help either. He also lost a couple years to injury (TJ in 2011, tore his Achilles batting in 2015), and was hurt to start 2023 as well. There were also times in recent years that he had velocity woes, but he bounced back from those. It would have been cool to see him go out of the game with Pujols and Molina, but Waino is also a competitor. Going for 200 makes sense - he would be the only the 3rd pitcher in club history to win 200+ games pitching for only the Redbirds (Bob Gibson 251, Jesse Haines 210). Most Cards fans will remember Waino for the good stuff, including getting # 200 if it happens.

Greinke needed 118 K's to reach 3K and while that was a stretch to start the year, I decided to make that my 2023 journey because well the team as a whole, while not this bad, wasn't going anywhere so why not maybe see history. Well, the Gman is 1-15, has the lowest run support out of all pitchers, and somehow Wano has more wins than him even though he is the worst in multiple other stats. I was at the Stl v KC game and it was sad seeing Wano get rocked, he didn't deserve that. And Greinke won't reach 3k K's this season, and I highly doubt he comes back next year for what will be the remainder sub 20, depending how many more he gets in 2023. But I did see history though, for the first time ever in MLB a team has won 2 games by walk-off balk in the same season, oh yeah baby KC setting not great, and not bad, but just huh neat records. I also was at Greinkes only win v BAL and go check that statline. Topps Now made a card of it, and it was a sub 2 hour game, the first ever for me, which was neat.

I think the biggest part of this is that so many baseball players just want, more than anything, one more chance. It's why Dave Stieb came back out of nowhere in 1998. He pretty much knew it was going to kill his chances of getting into the hall of fame, but I don't think he cared. I don't think any of these guys cared about how their last season went. They just wanted to get out there and do it. The hell with decked out baseball reference statsheets and constant positive WAR seasons, the only people who can truly say "it's time for this player to retire" is the player themselves. We are people. We're weird. We can act in ways many others consider out of the pocket. Let us stay that way.

If he gets to 200, it will be the definition of, “I’ve won, but at what cost?”

It would be pretty friggin’ funny (but also touching) if he pitched a perfect game as his last game.

@@default0467As long as the game's not in Cincinnati, because for some reason he doesn't pitch well there, he should be fine.

7 scoreless innings last night to win his 200th in a 1-0 game. Crazy. 😄

Cardinals fan here! It's for one reason. The pitching substance enforcement... it is the only thing that reinvigorated his spin rate a few years ago and thus, it kept his career sustianable longer when his velocity collapsed, but breaking stuff was still strong. This enforcement this year is collapsing his spin rate so now he is just a low velocity, low break pitcher, AKA, done. Sad.

So shorty after this video was posted Wainwright Succeeded in getting his 200th won. He then immediately said he wouldn't pitch any more games and has retired.

We’re hot trash this year. Waino’s chase of 200 is the only thing that keeps me going this season. As hard as it’s been watch my all time favorite player struggle, it’ll be worth it when he gets to 200

How could you do my boy rickey henderson dirty like that, bro had an ops+ of 100 from age 37 to 44, an almost full season at a 128 ops+ aged 40 (438 AB, .315/.423/.466), and stole 257 bags (47 per 162 games) at 78.6% success rate, almost .400 obp (including .410 and .423 seasons, 5th and 7th in the NL) led the league in walks and steals aged 39, and had only 2 of the 8 seasons with -war (-0.1 and -0.6), and in the whole span he put up 9.4 war. only him, kenny lofton, and davey jones have careers over 37 with 8+ war, 400 games played, 75 steals, and OPS+ >= 100 edit: also jose bautista had a 102 OPS+ in his last year with positive war (0.4), and jeter only put up 2.1 WAR in 452 games at 37+, including a last season where he had -2.2 wpa (37+ total was -0.9 wpa), and only had 4 rbi in 51 playoff ABs, including 18Ks to 3 BBs and a -7.5 championship wpa (Also he literally got to 3000 hits when he was 37 and then played 350+ more games anyway)
