How do we save the planet if we can’t protect our own people? In the Brooklyn neighborhood of Sunset Park, the community is coming together to fight gentrification and rising housing prices. Watch as Adan Palermo tells us the story of his work to protect their vibrant culture.
The World We Need is a book offering a vivid look at the people protecting America’s communities against environmental degradation and racism. The Story of Stuff Project is partnering with Grist and The New Press to produce a short video series highlighting four phenomenal activists, the third of whom is Adan Palermo. You are an inspiration to the world. Rents and homeless are used to displace working communities across the world. Don't give up we are with you 👍💯

In Australia renters have barely any rights -owning a property is everything - therefore it is easy for shady activity as well - this is one of the worst countries for money laundering through real estate! It is hard to build community in this situation because you are either in or out -....

These stories are more common than one would think. I'm glad they're being told though. They need to. We need them to.

By the time I have the money to visit New York, there won't be anything to visit. I want to eat where the various communities eat, I want to buy the groceries where they buy their food, I want to ride the trains they take to work, I don't want plastic made stuff, tourist attractions, it's not where people live.

This is interesting. They finally decided that gov't dependence leaves them wallowing in misery and decided to get up and do what needed done for themselves. AND they are concerned about being displaced by outsiders and ideologies that don't foster community and pride. In short- they became conservatives. 🙂

They are anti-capitalist and environmentalist, so not very conservative (shown in video). Also I don't know where you got "gov't dependence" from... the reason these ethnic enclaves exist is from the OPPOSITE of government support (anti-foreigner & anti-immigrant policies and ideologies). These places were made as they wanted to support each other socially and economically. If you'd like, look up and read about ethnic enclaves and specifically the “Puerto Rican problem” in NYC from 1945 to 1960
