6.3’ tall tank of a man that calls himself “Beast” the middle of a cattail swamp wielding a machete. Carries pistol in case he meets up with a “crazy”. You’re awesome.
Great video Dan! Ive done this once, I found that manual hedge trimmers work really good and speed up the process. Hardest part is just sitting there looking at cattails all day lol.
I hunt public land in MS, federal lands associated with flood control....watersheds, rivers, creeks, channels, wet - dry - wet - dry ...miles of swamp (yankees call it "marsh" lol)...Dan taught me TWO things that made a big difference to my hunting: First, bucks will do CRAZY things to get away from people. I honestly did not know three years ago that bucks would walk/swim miles out into swamps where there is ZERO food. I always focused too much on FOOD instead of SECURITY. Dan changed that for me. Secondly, to be successful *consistently* you HAVE to go where other hunters either can't or won't go. I know look for places with deer tracks, but no BOOT tracks. It works. But it's HARD WORK. I'm 53. I pray I can stay fit enough to keep doing this many more years. Thanks Dan!
Good luck getting away from people. I hunt in MS too. I used to be able to get away from people but can’t do it anymore. The use of GPS has made it too easy. Some of the hardest nastiest places I used to hunt now have treestands everywhere.
Guys who find success on the ground follow those same principles. Commit to one trail, see the deer at 90 degrees, draw and shoot when the deer gets past you. It's awesome knowing you can do it in all sorts of terrains and habitats
Hey Dan, you have taught me alot of tricks. But i have a tip for you that will make your marsh hunts easier....instead of using a machette to clear the cattails try a bill hook or brush axe. The curved tip will bite into the cats instead of glancing off....works great. Fiskers makes a nice affordable one. Called the 9 inch brush axe.
So what you’re saying Dan is we should look for the pink ribbons on the cattails in the swamp? In all seriousness, great approach. I’ve been doing some winter scouting but am not a fan of leaving tracks in the snow. Makes it too easy for others to follow
I LOVE hunting private land it’s like a cat and mouse game. I always have other hunters not familiar with the hunting area try and follow where I go in the woods to try and find out my hunting spots. I lose them off my tail every time LOL
Dan how long after you find a buck bed and sit in it to see who what when why he is there can you go and hunt the bed? How long would you give him to relax after your scent is in it? Seems to me he would smell it and abandon it for a little while after because of my scent being there
Love the info you put out. If a shooter does not come through the first hunt, how many more times would you hunt this set up? Do you need to be more concerned on calmer days that your scent will pool around you more?
I only hunt a set up like that one to three times a year. Unless I have good intell that a buck is there. Like maybe a hidden cell cam monitoring the trail.
Well, all I can say is, we don’t have to worry about the snowflakes taking our hunting spots. They think all the food comes from the stores...lol...and as far as them using a bow and walking to your stand, thats to much work. Great Video Dan.
A couple I hunt would be, low access parking with deer bedded high by the road, and small public pcs over looked cause of hard access or little to no signage showing it as public. Another may be entrance that crosses a river,
The Hunting Beast the by the road option and the crossing the river option are the only options that you mentioned that I haven’t looked into yet. Many of the spots I hunt are hard access; .25-.75 miles straight up a steep cliff followed by .25-.75 miles back in from there. I have found that these areas get totally undisturbed in archery, but some pressure from the back side during gun season drives. There are definitely some creek/river crossings I know of that I should check out, just might need a kayak or small boat to cross, they’re too deep to wade. Really gonna try to find those close to the road spots though. Haven’t hit on one of those yet.
Got an honest questions I notice the handgun in your pocket, do you carry while hunting in the swamps? I probably will next year just for safety reasons since I'll be along most of the hunts
Yes I agree , public land is crazy, I find alot of poached deer and hear lots of bad stories and have met some very angry people , thanks was just wondering
Hi Dan, my family and I are gonna be going through Wisconsin to Minnesota it would be a honor to meet you! First week of June we leave. Any chance we could have lunch? I’m sure you’re super busy my wife is on Facebook maybe we could reach out from there, set something up? TTYL
@@cantgetenoughoutdoors3258 Best to let me know a few days in advance... I have been scheduling a bunch of speaking engagements and such, but if im free, I might take you up on it.
I’ll be in touch and try and figure out what day we’ll be in Wisconsin is your face book name hunting beast too? I’m not good with that stuff but my wife is. I’ll try and figure it out, April’s my wife’s name.
Eberhart has this method detailed in some of his old books. No disrespect but has this ever worked to take a mature buck? I ask before I go out and try to do the same thing in the alder swamp.
I have not killed a mature buck yet doing this... Its worked on small bucks, and if digging a hole in a field worked for shooting 2 big bucks, i don't see why this wont.
@@thehuntingbeast agreed. I think half the reason the average bowhunter sits up in the hardwoods on the field edge is they wanna see a mile in every direction. This seems like it could work simply because it's counter to that frame of mind.
Dang it Dan! The reason there are more people doing this stuff is because you are telling everyone how to do it! I appreciate and use the info you provide us.......but knock it off!!!!😜
there's a channel out here called interesting news that's showing a lot of your videos didn't know if you were alright with that or not maybe you already know this.
