I did a poison ivy last comic con, I couldn't get the skirt I liked so used a scarf over my lap to look like a skirt. Worked really well with my wheelchair for my first try doing an adapted cosplay. Because I could tuck it in. Also popper fastening corset instead of laces so I can do it easier myself
This might be adaptive but I’m not sure. I had severe sensory issues with adhd so it doesn’t easily get off my mind and would cause a panic attack. So when getting into cosplay I had to test fabrics in stores, or if in second hand store buy clothes even if baggy to then that alter to fit to your liking at home. Also my favorite hid fidget buttons in my wrist cuffs or pockets for my social anxiety
your adaptive designs make me so much more optimistic about possibly needing a custom chair in the future. ive done cons unaided but it was always exhausting and i needed lots of time to sit on the floor instead of actually enjoying the con.
I'm happy to help and I hope you find something that works for you! I've done cons unaided, with crutches, and with my wheelchair and I could never enjoy cons to the fullest without my chair.
Oh, the thing about magnetic buttons reminded me that there is a thing called a button hook which helps to fasten (or unfasten) buttons. I believe they used to be popular in the Victorian period (everything had buttons back then) but they are still available and may be a good option that some people may not be aware of.
Thank you for mentioning this! The little adaptive tool I'm holding in this video that helps me with zippers has a button hook on the other end. They're very helpful!
You're probably the first person I've seen to actually talk about adaptive garments for disabled cosplay and i think thats awesome. I don't have a physical disability but my autism sometimes makes it difficult for me to wear costumes no matter how much I want to, so finding materials that have a texture that doesn't bother me can be a challenge. And I really struggle with laces (shaky hands 😅) so seeing that shoes like that exist was mind blowing for me I need to get some.
There was a period of my life when I needed adapt undergarments and my mom had to hand sew snaps onto store bought underwear. I can’t tell you how happy it made me to see a brand as big as Kim K’s making underwear with adaptive closures.
I have a g tube and never considered having to adapt a cosplay until seeing this video. I don't cosplay often, but hope to do so in the future. This video has me thinking maybe I should learn to make and/or modify some cosplays to be able to access my tube port more easily.
Thanks for sharing your story with me! Being able to adapt my own clothes has opened up a lot of possibilities for me and I hope you can find the same freedom too!
I've always seen cosplayers as geniuses for the different materials you end up using and the amazing designs, from the most simple to the more complicated. Finding ways to adapt a costume to your own needs is something that fascinates me.
Thank you so much for leaving this comment 💖 I remember about an hour after I first posted this video I got a really nasty comment about my acne. This video was posted years ago and I still remember it. I wish it could be more accepted, Maybe I'll film more videos wearing tank tops for us!
Simplicity patterns has a few adaptative design patterns to ease access to medical ports or chest devices, i never used them but i heard from other disabled people (i have autism, so my adaptations are only sensorial) that they work nicely, hope your content reaches more people
Thats cool. Im new here. I have chronic low back pain with centralized hypersensitivity, so being too hot or too cold or uncomfortable makes the pain worse. Would be cool to see designs with hidden interior pockets to hold medical devices like tens machines with a power pack, ice/hot packs, and sensory aids while the garment is a breathable natural fabric/blend.
One of the adaptions I do is picking characters where I can incorporate headphones into the look as an autistic with sensory processing. I'm now also starting to consider more how a wheelchair will effect what I'm wearing as Im in the process of getting my first wheelchair for ambulatory use.
I actually never thought of the wings on the back of the wheelchair that's so smart. I've also heard of pants that do up at the side instead of the front so the button isn't hurting the waist?
I made rainbow brite (points to anyone who remember that vinaltage character 😂). Anyway, I struggle to carry everything now and I found a large horse toy at the local tip. I ended up making a little float on wheels, that then allowed me to make a storage area for things I needed to take with me, but struggled to carry when using my stick. With all the rainbow fabric, it's quite popular, even to those who don't know who she is. 🥰
I did a panel called "secrets to making an accommodating cosplay" (its on my RU-vid channel) and we had a section on picking fabrics with heat tolerance in mind. It's something I see a lot more often in the craftmanship space. For example picking natural fibers that are more breathable when creating a costume. I agree I don't see it much in relation to managing with store bought costumes though
If you're looking for power wheelchair cosplay inspo than I recommend @chrysmuu on Instagram. All my tutorials on my channel are for a manual wheelchair, but people have gotten some of the wheelchair back decorations to work on power chairs, and of course designing costumes for sitting is gonna be similar. I LOVE my zipper shoes, they help with my poor grip, and also so I don't have to spend time bent down tying shoes (which hurts my spine), it's a small thing, but it makes my day easier!
i dont cosplay that much but i did adapt one of my favorite jackets to have a bigger zipper because the one it originally had was really hard for me to grab onto when my tremor is acting up
One way you could do big long wigs is maybe soak them in some sort of glue so that it's more like an elaborate headpiece than an actual wig made of hair
@@ColleenCosplay I keep seeing these videos of someone making resin corsets out of fabric on my for you page and that would be super cool to do with synthetic hair
@@funtimegenshin6973 sorry, I have two cosplay capes shorts. I referring to the part 1 video where I show some wheelchair dance choreography. Modifying the chair would make it difficult to do any back bend choreography moves in my dances
