Can't wait to see that 3d printed drive case. I was thinking about doing something similar myself, but couldn't justify the time or money. I had only recently built an 80TB storage server. I can definitely see myself going in this direction in the future.

I am also glad to have you back! There is a lot of information on RU-vid for building a Media Server, but I always go back to your videos because they have the best information- and easy for me to understand. Something I was wondering lately, the old Rule of Thumb of 1 transcoding stream per 2,000 Passmark Score has changed since they revised the testing. Also, a couple of years ago you did some comparison test of AMD verses Intel/Nvidea. I have thought about upgrading my current hardware, but cannot find any test with the newer hardware from all 3 companies. Would you consider doing this?
@tomreidy1237

@@birsp I have a Quadro P2000 doing the heavy lifting. I am just curious how the newer AMD's compare against the Intel chips.
@tomreidy1237
@tomreidy1237 3 года назад
@@birsp Intel w/ Quicksync will beat AMD's CPU's from everything I have seen. However, if you are using a Quadro card or a hacked NVidia card your "bottleneck" will usually be from something else. My Meta Data was killing my performance until I installed a SSD for my OS and all of the Meta Data. That made a huge difference. Another item that isn't explained very well is having the right driver for the video card. I wasn't getting any GPU transcoding's until I installed a newer driver (my system crashed when I installed the most current driver, so I went back a couple of generations and it is working great now). My current dilemma is whether I should upgrade my CPU/MB/RAM to either a newer AMD or Intel system. I am currently using an older i3-6230 (2 Core, 4 Thread) with 16 GB's Ram. I have around 20 clients who regularly watch content or listen to some of the music on my server and my bottleneck appears to be in my CPU. So- the last time Sloth TV did a comparison between an Intel and AMD system the Intel won handedly. A lot has changed since then and I would enjoy seeing what the new AMD's with all of their Cores could do against Intel and their clock speeds.

Dude, that is not for 16x drives, it is for 4+ Storage Shelves such as the Netapp 4246 that has a sas expander built in and can handle up to 128+ Drives on each port.
@SlothTechTV
@SlothTechTV 3 года назад
By itself technically 16 drives is all you'll ever get without sas expanders or different backplanes. By ITSELF with 4 sff8088 breakout cables you can easily add 16 drives. If you want me to speak in technicalities you'd hit IOPS bottlenecks FAR before you would ever get a single port to 128 drives. 16-24 drives is probably the most I personally would ever throw on one of these cards due to the older 533mhz powerpc processor.
@DanielTekmyster
@DanielTekmyster 3 года назад
@@SlothTechTV yeah, I was never able to comprehend why they would support that many drives. Personally I run only 24 drives per port on my 6gbps hba.

Great video! im not sure if its a quick edit but for people like me with a prusa printer it would be nice if you can print the parts in pieces that will fit smaller size 3d printer and just screw it together.

I'm looking to get an IT Mode HBA for my ASUS AM4 WIndows 10 machine in one of the PCI2 slots. How do these work with Windows 10? Are they just plug and play if they are in IT mode? IOW, you just connect the SAS or SATA drives (appropriate cabling of course) and Windows just sees them in Disk Management? Thanks so much for all your videos, and your recent one about your trials and tribulations was great. You're a valuable thought leader in the Chia-Verse!
