@@npoleary Hi sir thanku for giving time to us , my car has android auto ? i didn't try to android phone , but in usb my car show the phone photo on usb ! if try android phone is working ? thank you mate
Ah when I was sent this by Ottocast they only had this device for Apple CarPlay but they have since released the exact same thing but for Android Auto. It’s a dropdown menu before you add to basket 🤓
Excellent. I took your advice and bought the Ottocast wired to wireless converter which works immediately and without fiddling about 80% of the time. I will give this a go and let you know how it goes. I guess the car manufacturers don’t do it for safety reasons, however a simple circuit connected to the odometer output could stop it from working while the car is moving,
And for the older Mercedes where there is a USB media-playback support, I found an USB to AUX-in to hook-up any audio-source to your radio (e.g. external DAB receiver). Maybe you can also give some attention to that too?
Hey Nick, Thank you for the video ! 🎉 I have a USB-C adapter that I use on pc with HDMI input, USB, reader cards, etc. Do you know if an adapter like this works or I need that you use in specific ? Thanks
No worries glad you enjoyed it! Ah I see what you mean, so this adapter uses the Apple CarPlay protocol in the car to make it work. So using one built for a pc wouldn’t do anything. It’ll probably power up and allow USB-C and card reader slots but not HDMI. Ottocast basically use Apple CarPlay to run their devices through it so a car needs to have CarPlay in the first place. However since I covered this, they now also offer one that works through Android Auto too!
Hey Nick I also just reviewed this device. I appreciate your take, considering the device as a source of entertainment while the vehicle is parked. I personally found the device superfluous at best. With all of the required cables, and compromises, I felt it didn't add enough value over just viewing the source material over your cell phone.
Ah awesome! Well over the years I’ve had many many comments asking about how you can playback video content in cars, locally and online. I’ve covered a few devices before, some with their own Android operating system (with CarPlay built in) and some offer wired to wireless CarPlay. Some of the car manufacturers I’ve covered have been very late to the game with offering wireless. So it kind of fit into relevant accessories in a car. On your take, absolutely I guess it depends on the screen size in the car 🤓 For my own car, it’s not that much bigger but I’ve certainly reviewed a few that have massive screens with very good audio systems sometimes with many seats. So from that point of view, then it makes sense.
You plugged it into the arm rest, I have an EQA would I not need to plug it into the usbc port next to the cup holders as this is the one I use as the others did not work with my wireless android dongle
Some cars can, just depends. On Mercedes models their latest multimedia system (MBUX NTG 7 or newer, one with sparkles for the voice assistant) I’ve found works in any port. Anything older needs to be plugged in the cup holder port if that makes sense.
I doubt it would change the aspect ratio set by the car though. This was because Mercedes offered 7” and 10.25” displays as there were two screen sizes. I’ll swing by my local dealer and triple check (if they let me test it!) I’ll comment below this on my findings so bear with me.
Just been to check this out and it’s as I thought. This adapter just allows you to change the resolution of video playback but it still sits within that crop that is there previously due to the different screen sizes they offer.
Hello Nick, I have a Mercedes A200 class 2018, can I install this for my car, can I use CarPlay, my car does not have CarPlay at all, what should I do to have CarPlay in my car, please help me, thanks, I can also use Rage I will give you the car thanku
Hi 🤓 If you have a Mercedes A-Class 2018, that’s the year it changed so it depends which one you have. If you have the one with the touchpad in the middle and it’s touchscreen, then if the person who bought it new hadn’t selected Apple CarPlay you can add it even today. Just purchase it from the Mercedes-Benz app. Yes you will need Apple CarPlay to use this sadly Ottocast products do not give Apple CarPlay functionality to a car. It uses Apple CarPlay to work. Let me know how you get on! 🤓
@@npoleary Ok, thank you, so I have to go to the Mercedes company and they will install the CarPlay for me, and when we bought the car, no one else touched it and it is the same touch screen of the Mercedes company, I will definitely go to the Mercedes company and tell Anna that CarPlay Install it for me, thank you
That’s alright! Dealer’s can’t install it for you, you purchase it yourself on their app: shop.mercedes-benz.com/en-gb/connect/pdp/smartphone-integration/602 This is for the UK though, it depends where you’re based as it might be different elsewhere.
Hey Nick, Thank you for the video, but i live in Switzerland and i cannot order from amazon the "Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite " can you tell me another one available to be shipped here with the audio tuning to set up the delay? Thank you!
Oh really? 🤔 Really sorry I’m not sure what ones are available in Switzerland. I assumed Amazon would be the most readily available! There are Google Chrome cast screen throwers which might work the same way. I’ve searched online to see if they have an audio adjustment, they might do but I couldn’t clarify 100% if they did or not. www.telegraph.co.uk/recommended/tech/best-streaming-devices/ There’s this website (sorry it’s UK based) with the other different types just not sure what is available where you live. Really surprised about the Amazon one! 😕
For pre-facelift A-Class’s the USB-C port next to the cup holders is for CarPlay. But for the newer facelift over the past couple of years, any USB-C port can be used 🤓
Oh on Mercedes? Sadly not, it’s down to the car’s hardware why it’s cropped because it can be ordered with two screen sizes. So for CarPlay compatibility for both it’s cropped at 7”
Sadly I don’t have an iPhone with lighting to test (I have USB-C) according to their website you can though! 🤓 www.ottocast.com/discount/Nick20?ref=NickOLeary
You must have Apple CarPlay as it uses the Apple CarPlay protocol in the car to throw it up on the screen. Just like the devices I showcased last year, you *must have* Apple CarPlay as these devices don’t add it to the car. They just add extra functionality like: Wired to Wireless HDMI port etc Hope that clarifies!
No not silly at all 🤓 So when MBUX first came out on Mercedes there was an option to add CarPlay to a car (it basically wasn’t chosen at factory by whoever bought it). So yes you’ll need Apple CarPlay first as the device uses the Apple CarPlay’s protocol to launch 🚀
Ottocast have a compatibility checker on their website but I can confirm this worked in as many vehicles as I had access to test over the past couple of weeks. But best to use their compatibility checker to be 100% sure. Here’s it working in a GLC: share.icloud.com/photos/045RJEiRvtVeYSUTl0uXYBYAw
No sadly not this device uses the Apple CarPlay protocol in the car to throw it up on the screen. Just like the devices I showcased last year, you *must* have Apple CarPlay as these devices don’t add it to the car. They just add extra functionality like: Wired to Wireless HDMI port etc Hope that clarifies!
@@npolearyAh, that’s a bummer. I would assume that since my Mercedes has the functionality built in, but just not activated maybe this device could unlock it.
No these devices need a running / functioning CarPlay to work 🙏 Ottocast devices quite often just convert wired CarPlay to wireless on most of their devices 🙏
Possibly! Sadly I’ve not covered Audi yet on my channel but I would love to! As I mentioned in the video, Ottocast devices require Apple CarPlay to run so as long as your Audi has Apple CarPlay then it should work. The only thing that makes me unsure is that Apple announced CarPlay in 2014. I’m not sure that would have been enough time for car manufacturers to install it into their cars (it took on average about a year or two). Don’t know for sure if it has CarPlay?
At the time of recording there was only CarPlay but I noticed on their website they offer an Android version too now 🤓 Discount code hopefully should still work 🙏
@@npoleary just bought one with android auto from your link! (code works!thanks) meanwhile i received the carplay version and just tested on my car! works good with my google tv chromecast...BUT i can not change the screen size!! any tip?? only works central console on my A250e
Ah awesome! So the way to test the screen size is, does it fill the screen normally (like when you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto without the adapter) These devices can’t and won’t change the manufacturers configuration. So for example on Mercedes cars, the A-Class with a touchpad will always have cropped CarPlay due to the 2 screen sizes available when it was made. One is 7” and the other 10.25”. As they have to code for both only one is available which is why they have to go for 7” for both. The newer ones are only available in 10.25” so can have full screen.
CarPlay was announced quite a while ago almost 10 years (technically just under) I only started my channel in 2020 so for all of my audience it should be pretty relevant! 🙏 Yes for cars with Apple CarPlay which pretty much every car will be these days. I’d be surprised if a car doesn’t (except Tesla, they’re UI is pretty good)
