Add Bluetooth to an old amp with the Logitech Bluetooth Adaptor

A quick & simple video about sending Apple streaming music to a HiFi using a bluetooth receiver. You can buy the Logitech Bluetooth Receiver on Amazon: amzn.to/1SiSXfD (UK) amzn.to/1Mt7LmY (USA)
This video seems to have caused a surprising amount of confusion. The number one question asked by probably a dozen people in the first hour was - "Why didn't I use Chromecast Audio' The copy and paste answer is as follows: "My family streaming music subscription is with Apple Music (which doesn't have a Chromecast app) and I wanted to auto-connect whenever the HiFi was powered up, so Airplay was also out of the question".

Things have gone a bit weird in the comments - Probably a good time to turn off the laptop now and watch some TV. I'll check in again in a few days. Please try and have fun and enjoy things in the meantime.

This video will no doubt be a little bit too basic for many subscribers to this channel...but it is a simple how-to video for everyone else. Not everyone knows how a cheap bluetooth audio adaptor can be to play Apple/Spotify/Pandora streamed music back though a decent HiFi system - this video has been created for those people who want to see this demonstrated.

With a similar setup to my Denon receiver, when I attach the red and white RCA plugs into the receiver, nothing happens. Do I need to substitute a digital plug or optical plug?

Thanks Techmoan. I have been listening to my RU-vid etc.music through my iMac , iPad or on a Samsung TV which has fairly decent sound for a TV. I haven't used my Hi-fi for a few years. I want to try out putting everything through my TEAC amp and Tannoys without spending a fortune. I watch your vlogs anyway, but when I input "connecting analogue hi fi to usb/bluetooth devices you popped straight up! Great channel, keep it up!

+Techmoan Thought about buying one of these myself, opted for one that APT-X capable. Glad to see it's working well for you though, gives me an idea of just how the Logitech one worked (wasn't sure if it had a pairing button and on/off switch you had to use every single time you wanted to connect to it; which wouldn't have worked for me because I had a need for a device that would all me to connect wirelessly to an audio system thats main head-unit is stored in a closet.)

I'm impressed with how quickly it picks up the connection, I use a Bluetooth headset for music and you have to press play on the unit to connect. I have a couple of AV conversion boxes using USB power and recently bought a USB hub with power switches so I can switch them on and off manually, one hogs an HDMI connection if left on and they do get surprisingly warm.

Somehow I missed this one when you first published it. I'm glad I finally did see it, because it makes listening to music in my garage/shop much more convenient (obviously I've bought one). I used to plug my iPhone into a 1/8" stereo jack to RCA plug adapter that led to my old Yamaha stereo receiver driving a pair of those old Radio Shack Minimus 7's. This gets to be a bit of a hassle, especially if I get a text/call. I have the Logitech box powered by a switched outlet on my receiver, so all I have to do is turn on the receiver and open the Pandora app. When I leave the shop, I just turn off the receiver. That's it. No messing around with cables or turning on/off casting, like with Chromecast Audio, something I had considered before seeing this video. A friend of mine has one of those, and it's better than nothing but is kind of fiddly to use. Thanks!

These are cool gadgets. I will probably get this and hardwire a power supply in my car to get Bluetooth streaming back on my factory fit stereo in my car. The only reason I didn't use bluetooth for my hifi is that I have had issues with it stuttering, then the music changing pitch/speed so that it can "catch up" - I rely on music for my own personal therapy and find that sort of thing during a track can completely wreck an evening, so I went down the Chromecast Audio route as I use Spotify for music streaming. Granted, I have to tap the relevant buttons on whichever device to begin the casting, but it has been so reliable that I can forgive it for that and for what the system is used for and how I sometimes use my tablet, the automatic connection whenever power is present wouldn't work for us, but it's encouraging to see you have the perfect solution for your own household. Nothing can be said to turn me away from thinking it is brilliant that it is possible to stay comfy in your seat and browse through thousands of different artists and albums. I actually have such a setup in my bedroom rig and the main system in my lounge.

This video is now 3 years old or so.... and those older bluetooth receivers reduced audio quality because the data had to be compressed to fit onto the bluetooth bandwidth. Nowadays you can buy a bluetooth receiver that has a DAC (digital to analog conversion) chip with the aptX coding protocol, which upsamples the digital music file and increases the dynamic range and signal to noise. In short, with this new bluetooth coding protocol combined with a DAC chip, you get the advantages of bluetooth streaming at near CD quality.

Interesting. Can you recommend a particular product? Also, do you know of a way I can use my Bluetooth headphones through non Bluetooth devices? I'd assume there would be some sort of receiver that could be used, but I am unable to find one. I have Beat's Solo3 wireless headphones, and would like to use them to listen to my guitar playing through my guitar amps. The amps don't have Bluetooth capabilities however. I received the Beats headphones for free when I bought my computer, but really don't have a use for them since just use a Bluetooth speaker for listening to music. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm surprised Apple doesn't have some sort of receiver for using their Beats headphones for devices that aren't Bluetooth capable.

Hi Techmoan, thanks for the video, very useful. I think I'll get one for my stepdaughter who does gigs. At the moment she has to plug in her iPhone or iPad into the PA and therefore keeps needing to go back to the PA, to select her next backing track, often turning her back on her audience. I'm hoping with this, she can Bluetooth her device to the PA and within reason not be confined to standing near the PA during her performance. Thanks

Regarding the lack of power switch, I think it is not necessary. This little device and its charger are quite well engineered, and take almost no power in standby. When I did tests for it, My samsung TV, Sony Stereo and Logitech BT receiver together pulled less than 1.5 watts when in standby. I currently have it hidden on top of my "drywall" ceiling, coupled with a little amplifier board and feeding some celing mounted speakers. Its a great solution for streaming ambient music.

I'm also a person who lives with a number of Bluetooth receivers. I have one for a 2.1 speaker setup on my nightstand to fall asleep to, and one in the car as my sony deck was slightly before the time of bluetooth. One thing I should stress, it is worth your while to make sure that you are using AptX. This is a special codec that must be supported on both the receiver and the phone/tablet. Most high end androids support it (as well as some midrange/entry level like the LG volt) but none of the Iphone/apple products support it. Also do a little research and try and get a receiver from a good company. If you go to cheap you are liable to end up with badly put together units (noisy headphone jacks) and audio DACs with tons of line noise. I still use a pair of earbuds but with this setup I save a ton of wear and tear on my headphone jack. Oh also these days android phones are supporting built in media servers. So say, your PC or laptop is hooked into a nice speaker setup, just use that to wirelessly transmit your music collection on demand. You can use a number of music players but I just use the media player that is built into windows.

Have the same BT box and although it doesn't support aptX just SBC, it's sounds okay. But found out I'm using my computer just too much in my room so I'm not really listening to music from my phone there. However it's a great companion in the kitchen with an older Aiwa tape radio while cooking. :)

I use Apple TV, but this way is a good solution for people who have a separate stereo system to their tv/hi fi. A USB plug would be a good addition, since some people may be using this with their computer system. Great video, TM, a good solution for a problem which your wife won't use, as she won't be bothered to turn on all the appliances and she will just use her iPad speaker, like my wife does, despite me buying her docks, Bluetooth speakers and all the rest.

Bluetooth audio is much more cumbersome, complicated and limited than AirPlay in my experience so it’s really interesting to see you have a different experience! I absolutely hate it when a Bluetooth speaker is connected to one device and I want to switch to playing back from another device. With AirPlay all of that is effortless. Of course, it’s nicest when an audio device supports all three, Bluetooth, AirPlay and Chromecast.

I read your comment regarding Chromecast audio and obviously using Apple Music, it wouldn't be a solution. Personally I have all my music ripped and added to Google Music and Chromecast audio was the perfect solution for me, it also supports Spotify. Bluetooth audio compression wasn't good enough for my ears at least using a reasonable priced receiver and the fact I can hand off to the Chromecast and have my ipad free to do other things with audio is another bonus too. Audio quality when you turn on High Dynamic Range is superb.

A great idea; SO great, that I did it myself. However, being a cheapskate I went for a Bluetooth dongle costing less than £2 delivered, from Hong Kong. It takes its power from a USB socket that happens to be on the back of my TiVo box, and connects straight into my NAD amp. Now I can listen to Spotify on the iPad through my hifi. Fab! A couple of caveats: If I power down the iPad then i have to reconnect with the dongle. I think this is an iPad 'feature', tho. This particular dongle will only connect with one device at a time. Finally, once I got this all set up, my Spotify kept on stopping, buffering etc. No good at all. There seems to be some conflict between the wifi and the bluetooth (both using 2.4GHz band). Luckily, both my Virgin router and the iPad have a 5GHz wifi option. Once this was selected, all problems disappeared. V happy. Thanks for great videos, Mr Moan. Always a 'must-see'.

I might actually have to look into this for my surround setup I have in my back media room, but then again I can just cast the local audio from my Android phone to my Roku HDMI Stick, and most of the streaming services I use also work with my Roku minus SoundCloud, or at least I've yet to find a ROKU app for it lol!

I searched for a similar solution, and landed on the Nyrius Songo Tap. Fantastic little Bluetooth device, works in a very similar manner as the Logitech, but also offers the ability to "tap" an NFC enabled device and bind to it immediately. It does allow for multiple devices (I believe 8 in total), as well as including optical output (yes, I am a nerd). My only real complain has been that as I have two, I am frequently connecting to my stereo in the bedroom, instead of the living room and vice-versa (I guess this speaks to the range, but can be an annoyance).

Neat. I have a Google Chromecast I've connected up to a receiver, which does the same job over the wi-fi. I wonder if there would be any quality difference between wi-fi and Bluetooth. But it's great that older A/V equupment can be modernised this way.

How much "real world" bluetooth range does it have? I'm thinking of getting one so I can bluetooth from an android box up by my projector across the room to the hifi by the screen but I can't tell if the range will be enough, the bluetooth built into the hifi only has about 1.5m range(if that) as I think it's bluetooth 1.0. I know the range on my phone working with the android box can reach as I have used my phone as a remote control for the android box and I have used another bluetooth speaker with the android box. Hopefully 6m+ is good.

I use an old Android cell phone to stream music from Shoutcast via WiFi. I connect the cell phone to my receiver using a phono to headphone jack patch cord. Works great! Obviously not a wireless connection though. I wonder is a bluetooth connection would provide higher sound quality?

Dear Techmoan! I've a question for you... I watch your videos since a long time, and I always see these cool looking labels in your equipments. I mean the labels what in this case said "IPAD" on your switch box for your amplifier. Could you please make a video what tool you use for makeing them?

Hi, thanks for this video. Can you get this type of device to output through USB (not RCA) to a DAC headphone amp? Thanks.
