lol, what I would give to have my “feeling off” days of playing piano to sound like that beginning. It sounded amazing. It reminds me of something I read a while ago- apparently, there’s a pretty good correlation between when a basketball player’s feeling “hot” and how bad they play. The more “hot” a player was feeling, the more risky shots and missed plays they had. Conversely, the players who said they were playing really terribly tended to play their best- they tried harder, focused more on fundamentals, remembering things that helped them in the past. I think our emotions lag behind us sometimes, and have a lot of other contributing factors besides just how good someone’s doing at that moment. Anyways, great playing and great podcast, keep it up!

Love this episode and the analysis of everything! Super apologies if this comes off as rude, but I was wondering if you guys used a heavy de-esser on the video? There's a kind of lispy quality on all S's that I don't normally hear from either of you. Wonder if it was just audio correction pushed too hard? Or maybe my speakers are just blowing up, haha.

Some great nuggets of advice about spacing in this lesson. I also kinda like it when things get a little chippy between Adam and Peter. You get the sense that they are actually friends who don't mind ribbing each other occasionally

Space is important for sure. I wish I could remember to do this. My piano teacher in high school used to make me sing my solos. His point, that I have carried with me my whole life, was that you don't need breath to play the piano. This creates a tendency to play nonstop and be too busy. If you sing your solos, you HAVE to have space where you take a breath. That naturally creates space and phrasing. Sorry guys... audio quality was off on your voices on this one. I still listened to the whole thing though! Thanks for putting this content out. I love it.

Put in space, for sure, and avoid the equivalent of "run on sentences", especially since the spaces let other sounds pour back through into the whole show (in the video I hear some nice bass sounds come through). Also, it's a very good thing to get used to really good quality phrasing, regardless of length, especially using the same kind of real "swing" feel to eights, and to consider use of things which might not automatically come to mind, like vibrato (note that greats like Freddie Hubbard will definitely use vibrato at times; this kind of thing might not dawn on piano players, but wind people should serious review the concept). Rhythm and phrasing is far, far more important to improvising than is immediately obvious. To me, rhythm and phrasing imbue "life" into the notes.

Peter is SPECIAL! You could be having the worst day of your life and Peter could play something that could turn it all around in mere seconds. Also, is there an email I can send to the Open Studio staff for suggestions and complaints? I can assure you that the email i send will be brought up at the next OS Staff meeting. :) Its very positive, to the point with zero butt-kissing. :)

This is a good episode... Peter isn't leaving very much space in the conversation, and in the stretch after 21:33, I started to get really annoyed, but then I recognized that over-eagerness to interject like it was in Aesop's Fables🤣. Whether you meant to or not, that's a good teaching method. Jazz isn't quite so 2nd nature to me, as other styles, but the goal is to make it more a part of that 2nd nature.

Great vid guys, Respectfully, I feel like neither of you leaned into the concept of question and answer in this space. This is a conversation and no one likes to hang with the cat who never shuts up... The fastest way for me to slow my self down and get inside the music is to sing my lines internally, like Peter was doing, but along with he phrase not after (though re-singing the phrase you just played is a great thing as well). If you really keep up the singing it makes it obvious when breath is needed as well as bringing forward that which for me is the golden goose here. Did I just ask a question, or answer a question? We all do this naturally with spoken language... You gotta shut up and await the answer if you wanna have a conversation
