Join Dan in this episode as he talks to Anna Jasper, a single mum sharing her journey within the throes of addiction, broken family, single parenting, the loss of a loved one and the realisation of the strength it's taken to get this far. Discussing the universal problem of addiction, the effects it can cause to the children of addicted parents and changing the narrative, to ensure people know that 'it's normal to not be normal' and that the most important thing we can do in life is TALK.
Anna opens up about her (almost) 8 years sober; how she still battled with depression and suicide, but managed to maintain her sobriety at the lowest point in her life. She shares how seeking help has saved her and that she recognised the effect of her behaviours on her young son, before seeking therapy to help them both. Anna shares insight into the life of a 24 hour drinker, parenting whilst having an addiction and coming to terms with the extreme lows whilst being sober.

Menace II Sobriety Live brings the up & coming podcast to the live stage; hosted by Daniel O'Reilly and a special guest, no topic is off-limits. Combining humour with stories and issues which both Daniel and the audience will have experienced, whether first hand or through someone they know. Offering an environment for people to openly discuss their struggles was Daniel's main focus behind starting the podcast, as well as his M.A.T.E group; so now he also brings it to the stage and to the public.
What can people expect at the live podcast:
Join Daniel at Menace II Sobriety Live, as he discusses all things sobriety, ADHD, mental health and more. The podcastwill be recorded live with a special guest, including audience interaction and finishing with an open Q&A.
Daniel will not only be discussing sobriety, but everything life throws at us, and he would love for you to join him. Bring your tissues and your sense of humour, because we have no idea what topics will be discussed, but whatever the conversation, it'll be a supportive environment and may contain some dad jokes.
Story behind the podcast:
The Menace II Sobriety podcast was set up after Daniel faced his own battles with sobriety, ADHD, mental health and certain life scenarios. He set up a M.A.T.E group on Facebook, so that men could support men in an accessible, open and friendly environment. Upon seeing the responses from men around the world to some of the posts on the group, Daniel was blown away by the kindness and support of strangers. This led him to create the podcast, inviting a range of guests from different backgrounds, sharing his own personal experiences & struggles; and now, opening up to the public in a live environment, where people can come along and watch in-person, or get involved in the audience interaction.

Really enjoyed this one, Dan; and I agree what others have said. You are really maturing as an interviewer. Some of your questions in this interview got to the kind of nuance in Anna’s story that can easily be - and is often - overlooked. Great stuff. Keep it up. This podcast is such a help to so many of us.

I relate to you anna so much when you talk about the trauma and survival of your childhood and what we do to block it out when we don’t know that’s even what’s going on . the thoughts of none of it being worth it anymore , single parent pressure is such a subject !!!! I’ve got some stories to tell on it all lol😂 Anna get your own podcast I feel you could be the dapper menace to sobriety for us women ❤

Dan, I want to sincerely thank you for making this podcast and being such an inspiration to keep sober. I got into coke way before I ever got into drinking. I just loved that tenseness, that euphoric rush of energy where your muscles just tense up in the best way. It felt like it gave me the power I needed at the time, and having a good amount of disposable cash, it wasn't very difficult to be sniffing every day. Dry sniffing. That lasted from when I was around 17 to not long after I turned 23. I've always been of a healthy weight, but I had some major issues with my heart at that time and started doing so much I'd go into anaphylaxis, wake up 30-60 mins later, have a fag and another hit on the pipe or another line. I was down BAD. I'm surprised I don't look like a junkie if I'm being honest. But, like Steve-O from jackass I do have a hole in my nasal cavity, and I get AWFUL chest infections now. That all scared me away from it, and I did well for a year, completely cutting out the rock and only sniffing every couple months. Which, from doing it daily, was a huge improvement. I never liked drinking and sniffing together bc I drank to get wasted and I sniffed to get geeked, I fed off the anxiety of it all. But around the start of the pandemic I picked up alcohol a LOT more and stopped sniffing altogether, and bearing in mind I'm a 5"3 woman at about 8 and a half stone. I'd started drinking those 7-8% lagers and ciders, sometimes as many as 8 in a night on top of getting stoned. But I figured since I could get up and do my day, I was fine. I'd never got back into coke except the odd once or twice from 2020 to this year, and from about mid 2021 the drinking gradually became less. Around July of this year I decided to get sober, and I did last until September, but I live in another country now and there's a lot of stuff I haven't sorted out mentally. I got offered coke and bought a gram because.. well.. I'm an idiot and was caught on a bad day. As soon as I got in the door I got straight to it, and within about 4 hours I was making the call for more. This resulted in about a 2 week sniff and rock binge and almost financially ruining myself for it. The last day I did it was the 24th of September this year, and I'm now determined to stay off it. I'm nearly 27 now and I don't want to die early, I saw it as enhancing my life, but I now realise it was shortening it. I apologise for such a long winded comment, I just had to get this off my chest, I've never commented on this page before but I watch religiously because it gives me the motivation and inspiration I need to stay sober. Life can be so beautiful and I'm starting to see the light. All the respect in the world to you Dapper, you've done an awful lot for so many people in similar boats just by being you and being honest, and obviously by being such a good creator and podcast host. I wish you all the best in your journey my friend. Keep on keeping on!

@@francescaemmaj79 awww thank you so much for the kind words! It really is beautiful when we let it be, it's honestly pretty sad to look back at certain times.. it's like.. how did I even let myself get there?! And yea there's so much support available now, so many ways to make sure we stay on the right path. Sending lots of love and positive vibes your way!

You gorgeous, aren't the only one, we all do it, but every battle we've gone through was worth it to get to that point we go why am I doing this to say I need to stop to see we have problems to admit it which SO MANY PEOPLE CANT AND NEVER WILL!!! those moments no matter how mortifying they seem to be we look back on, actually they really aren't at the same time because it's the depths of addiction, things in addition and mental illness that when you're at despair unless you've gone through it no one gets and you'll look back and not recognise that person but you'll want to wrap that person up and tell her she's going to be ok she'll make it through because you'll make sure she will because she is you ♥️ you've got this girl you've got that fire already you've got the main key which is honestly and communication and the fire 🔥
@emilyn9076
@emilyn9076 10 месяцев назад
@@francescaemmaj79 100% agreed! All of those battles were worth getting to where we are now; it goes to show how strong we are that we can overcome obstacles as huge as addiction. And omg SOO many people completely refuse to even acknowledge the problem, it's really saddening bc they'll probably never let those addictions go. It's sad to say but my mum has always been a daily drinker and she didn't even admit to having a problem when she went through withdrawal!! She got out of the hospital and was drinking the same night... I cannot physically understand that level of self sabotage.... And you've worded that so beautifully, I do wanna wrap my old silly self up and tell her she'll get through it, the person I was back then wouldn't have believed that even if you showed her. Thank you so much for the support! I absolutely love conversations like these, and I believe BOTH of us have that honesty and FIRE inside of us that'll help us to win over our pasts! We're absolute bosses and we have the power to do anything! There's no sense looking back when the future is so bright!

Quality podcast all. Would love to be on the podcast to discuss my short journey. I believe I am representative of the majority of your audience. I am a normal lad, who went out on the weekends and gradually got addicted. However: I don’t believe addicts are born addicts. I don’t believe everyone is trying to ‘escape’ by doing drugs. The majority just enjoy doing them but get addicted. I am 3 months sober. Fears for me were how to be sociable, I think your audience want to hear how to overcome those obstacles! Would love to represent the normal 20-40 year old lad who has gradually got addicted due to social scenarios.
