Adding detail to Metcalfe Terrace houses : Elvenhome 166

Gosh darn N scale. My wife sees tiny kitties and freaks out getting all teary eyed about how cute they are. I see a quality N scale settup and get the same way 😂❤

A thoroughly enjoyable episode - I simply love the detailing, it becomes such an absorbing exercise but I suppose the challenge will be in deciding when enough is on the verge®😉 of becoming too much. Super work.

Hi Stephen. Good to see you back again. I've ordered some Beehive chimney pots from Smart Models for my Metcalfe kits (they're not listed in the More section - naughty). I, too, have ordered all of the Dad's Army wagons from Buggleskelly (aka PhotograFix); let's hope they can be persuaded to produce more N gauge rolling stock.

Love the house details, really helps bring the scene to life. A new project… intriguing.

There is only one thing that stops the Scene from looking real, the trees are not blowing in the wind. (No idea how you would get around that). But it shows the quality of your work that is the thing that gives it away.

Hello Stephen. You’re obviously very close to reaching completion, although I’m sure you’ll always find little projects to refresh your railroad from time to time. Congratulations for a very nice layout, you sure have put a lot of effort in and the end result is a credit to you. Just a suggestion to add even more interest, have you considered putting in DCC Concepts shuttle board to take your trains up to High Elven and back? Thank you for taking the time and trouble to record, edit and post all of your videos, it is appreciated.

Hi Stephen, I love those tin baths! You have managed to get some lovely details in the backyards and although time consuming worth the effort. The chimneys look so much better than the Metcalfe one’s and I’m really thinking now that Metcalfe kit’s are the way forward for me but adding other details makes them so much better, like the Scalescenes roof tiles sheets as well as the chimney’s just gives them a more realistic look and saves hours of cutting out if you’re making Scalescenes models! As for those bikes amazingly small but look so good nonetheless and do add those lovely details. I’ve used some of the Vollmer brick sheets for something I’d done a long time ago and the texture really did bring them to life, I’d completely forgotten about them until you mentioned the cobblestones. I saw the video from Tom regarding the Dad’s Army wagons and they are on a very early Christmas list for Mrs Exehaven and my children to get for me! Exehaven hasn’t been touched at all in the past few weeks as there are lots of other things that are taking up my time. The garage project is nearly complete at least and then I can start moving unwanted stuff in the cabin into the racking in the garage. Nice video Stephen, the row of houses looks very effective. I agree with you about some items need to be over scale. The florescent lights I want to build for my station canopies will be slightly over scale...Simon

Hello Stephen Nice update on the details, but I think we all know its the details that take the time up, making mountains and scenery can be relatively quick. Hopefully I will be getting some of the Buggleskelly vans too, its a great idea to do 'non-authentic' wagons now and again just for fun, I've also ordered a Rapido G Fawke's Gunpowder van, hopefully due in the autumn. Hi Stephen - Love the houses, they look magnificent and just keep getting better with what you are doing. I prefer the grey chimineys, not at all keen on the Metcalf ones. I am lately getting fed up with the amount of adverts i get online for HO and O gauge trains, hardly anything at all for us N Gaugers. Not seen any steam trains advertised of late let alone for Southern Railways, seems to be all this modern stuff they are interested in now. I can get 3d prints of trains for my area but cannot get any chassis to fit tham as they have all been discontinued. Seem to get stumped at every angle as I try to progress my collection. Anyway less of me and keep the updates coming.

Agree the Metcalfe Cobble sheets are very one dimension - wish I'd known about the vollmer textured cobbles - would have been handy to use in Blackwood Parade - ah well - the Metcalfe cobbles will just have to do !. Challenge accepted: I've been working with 0.3mm brass rod, and can definitely see it - so that's an immediate more than 2x improvement in getting closer to scale. I was also thinking about hair, which I see someone else has mentioned - there seems to be no shortage of it here, catching it should be a breeze! I've got 0.4 outer diameter 0.2 inner diameter brass tube, and have seen that 0.3/0.1 was available, so hair could be threaded through that if attaching at the end proves troublesome. All that said, the added detail of the lines at 0.75 brings life to those back yards, looks good :)

Hi Stephen, so disappointed there are no clothes pegs! Houses looking really good but i think the canal area is now the jewel in the crown, looks so good. Would there be any trees in or around the houses in those areas at that time? Interesting, 2MM fine scale, now that is a discipline and a half, all the best.

I’ve heard using human hair for short lines crazy glued in place. Should only take an hour to work out.
