VRM's get hot, and so can chokes, when they get hot, they are "less good" or make parts of the system throttle to prevent damage, this can harm performance and also shorten the lifespan of the components.
So what can we do to improve that? Well adding some tiny lumps of metal to the VRM should help right?
Let's have a look and see if it is worth it.

somehow neglected , there's a motherboards manufacturer who added a small fan with air duct to convey air direcly to VRM surrounding the cpu . I spotted one them on Ebay, unfortunately sellers removed the cooling system , but I can't remember the brand .
@EliteRock
@EliteRock Год назад
If you'd taken the IR readings from the back of the MB it would have given a precise delta for with/without heatsinks - the MOSFET's metal backs are soldered over their entire area to a ground-plane to sink heat to the MB (a thermocouple placed there can provide _actual_ MOSFET temperature minus maybe a couple of degrees). ETA>> another way of cooling VRM's is a fan on the back of the motherboard, stuck to the CPU backplate (silicone RTV works well, securely attaches the fan but easily cleaned off when needed) - a 90x15mm works well and can be run at fairly high RPM without being audible (particularly if it's a good quality one) - as noted above, the MOSFETS sink a lot of heat into the MB whether heatsinked or not, and the unobstructed back surface is quite conducive to air flow. You can further improve temps by cutting the motor/impeller out of its frame. On my Asus Prime Z390-A it reduced VRM temps (according to HWiNFO) by at least 10°C. This is actually an easier mod to carry out than adding heatsinks. Use a Y-splitter from the CPU fan header.

Good idea, but problem is, that those glue tapes are sliding due warm. And this is risky, because few months later can heatsinks make short circuit on the motherboard.
@michaelthompson9798
@michaelthompson9798 Год назад
I used to add these heat sinks to my original Nvidia GTS250 and other earlier model gpus and they did make an improvement in temps and more so with some case fans blowing air over them. They were cheaper to purchase them back then than they are now in comparison time / inflation etc 🥰👍😇

When doing these mods it's best if large piece heatsinks are used in conjunction with normal thermal paste and some high temp silicone adhesive on the corners to keep them in place! Also I did notice the heatsinks that you used were extremely low profile, generally you want to pick heatsinks that are as tall as possible! I loved the video❤!

I refuse to buy a board with naked mosfets. I bet lots of people have some boards that have high TDP CPUs that run hot on some older AM4 board that has no top down cooler and no air moving around thinking everything's fine and dandy because their AIO has the CPU temps in check. I try to avoid hot spots in all forms of electronics. Like you said, sometimes it's not necessary, but I prefer to use caution whenever I can.

I've ran this motherboard (B550M-K with a Ryzen 3 quadcore) for three years (ie, pushing past warranty) and had the board start crashing, instant power-offs without BSOD, weird pixelated visual artifacts and stuff like that. I play MMOs for hours at a time and touching the MOSFETS and chokes they get pretty toasty, especially the +2 on the side! After realising the motherboard was the problem and the VRM system in particular, I'm finally upgrading to something with a sane amount of phases in the VRM. I would definitely not recommend this thing, even with the custom heatsinks added on (the M-A version has one extra VRM phase at least!). But good on you for giving it a go and giving people a budget option!

I've just come across this, as I have been searching for descent after market VRM coolers, as am not happy with the solution that came with my board as my previous boards the VRM ran a lot cooler but it looks like I'll be resorting to carefully carving up an old p4 heatsink, and shaping it to fit. You may get a better idea of how well the cooling works if you can measure the temps from the back of the board underneath the VRM - as you will know the caps will also get hot, reducing their lifespan if left unchecked...

better with them than without, also, about that temp-gun , the laser is for a distance, at close there is a 1 inch offset, so you should not use it at closer than 1 feet, better chase the most heat on the display than watching the laser, also temp-guns hate aluminum, they usually don`t seem to be able to measure high reflective metals well

7:10 you can actually point the Infrarays towards backside of motherboard ( behind vrm) to get appx. Exactly vrm temp. And do it before adding heatsink vs after to get a conclusion. Also i would suggest running an i9 on h610 motherboard since intel cpus are very powery hungry and generates heat. They will be highly affected by vrm temp.

If the VRMs don't have sufficient cooling they can throttle the CPU. And it can be pretty subtle - after dusting out my cooler I didn't shove the fan all the way into it and the CPU throttled multiple times a minute (5900X on one of these cheap Asus Prime boards - I know, I know, but the board had been a toss-in with a 3600X). Adjusted the fan location a bit and now it doesn't throttle. I should probably go with the cheap solution of these little sinks rather than picking up a better board for a dead socket.

I got problems with my VRMs and I was thinking about getting the tiny heatsinks before I do anything bigger as for example buying a new MB. As soon as my CPU hits 52°C the VRMs hit 80°C and theyre calibrated to throttle power and CPU frequency down when they reach this temp; this results into lags ingame and also cause wrong readings in temp (CPU jumps from 52°C to 206°C). Are these heatsinks worth a shot? I got bad air flow in this stock case so I also plan to install a fan to blow on the VRMs.

What if you use thermal glue on vrm, then use a thermalpad to stick to it, then make a bigger thermal cooler for vrm, like if you have a deffektive older motherboard and you bought a budged motherboard with no vrm cooling solotion. Can you stick thermal glue first on vrm then thermalpad then a bigger cooler? The reason i ask to use thermal glue then thermal pad is becouse on some of the vrms there are capasitors that is higher then the vrm. I tried with just sticking a thermalpad and a small ssd cooler and the temp went down 10c on vrm just with the small cooler.

But i have heard that the heatsink should NOT touch the capasitors around the vrms, this might couse a short circut? is this something you are familiar to? i have done this before, worked great, but what scares me is the new motherboard lga1700 has 4 capasitors a little higher then the vrms.

Please do next time use thermal paste

Much the same result as those who cram fans in their case in every spot possible; not worth the dough and trouble.

Note: The adhesive on these most of the time ISN´T thermally conductive. Thermally conductive adhesive tape is expensive and you won´t get that sort of material with few alu heatsinks for 4€... As it is, you actually isolated your VRM, not helped cooling it down.

Can add glue or not sir?

thermal glue would be okay

You should measure temperature of backside, where VRM sits…

Thanks I realise that now but some people have said that thicker boards will give incorrect results due to extra pcb layers

Hi, Mike. I think I'd try making a monoblock that covered the CPU and VRMs and water-cool those bad boys. 😂👍💦

Recycling the hot air of your cpu to « cool » your vrm is a bit weird

the hot air from the cooler is a lot cooler than the VRM temps so it will cool them
