UPDATE 2023! : To access Publish to the Web in Drawing you mush now go to File > Share > Publish to the Web. This is a new update to the Drawing User interface in 2023. Thanks to @dontknowwhattotypelo for bringing the change to my attention.
Perfect Tuto, explaining non working possibilities first, then solutions. Why is there an impossibility to use the link from images stored on the Google Drive ? Is it a security limitation ? Because it is so annoying to not be able to use them ! Seriously, what a nightmare to do something so simple et very useful.
This worked great but there is a black line underneath the image (I am assuming Google showing users this is a linked image), is there a way to remove this, is this something new they have introduced or have I done something wrong here?
Hmm, that doesn't typically occur for me. It could be browser based perhaps. Maybe something like safari might do this 🤷♂️. You could try changing the font color to match the background.
@@yagisanatode using Chrome version 129.0.6668.71 on a MacBook and even changing the font colour to match the background does not remove it. I am using the HYPERLINK method and no matter what image I use it adds it annoyingly.
I published my google sheet as a webpage, it works great on pc, but the hyperlink doesnt pop-up when viewing in ios on the iphone. you click on the image but nothing happens. any ideas?
Unfortunately links and menu items don't work in the Mobile App. You can try replacing the button with a checkbox and onEdit() trigger though. Hey Yagi - got everything working almost great. The hyperlinks and images are all working perfectly on the sheet itself. The issue I'm having is when I publish it as a website and then embed it on my website, none of the image links are usable (no links pop up to click), except for the text links. Do you know of a solution?
Website exports can be notoriously unreliable with with Google Workspace and Microsoft files. While they can provide minimal XML/HML conversion they are definitely not designed for it unfortunately.
Awesome! Super helpful. Thanks! Only challenge is I have all of my images etc on Dropbox rather than google drive and it appears they don't want to play in the same sandpit. Do you know of any other way around it without me havign to transfer my whole dropbox to google drive? TIA
My understanding is that Dropbox (and, I guess Google Drive) is not intended as a content host for websites. Perhaps a workaround, that I have not tested, might be to retrieve an image using the Dropbox API and then convert it to a blob in Apps Script before saving it to a file in Google Drive.
You could apply the same principles as the tutorial below to extract the image thumbnail for the selected cell: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a_bVdiosOQ4.html
@@TechnoEveryday All good. You can actually sort your Google Drive by type (image) and a bunch of other selectable parameters. This will generate a URL with the custom search that you could bookmark. It might be an easier code-free workaround for you.
This tutorial worked great! One issue however, whenever I try to follow the first example with PNG's, the transparent background turns black. Is there a way to prevent this?
Hi Yagi, any idea why the links don't show when exporting to pdf? I've been using an image from a google folder option. It all works great on google sheet but no links when exporting... TIA!
I followed your steps. I get the image in the cell but it doesn't link to anything. Did Google come up with something which doesn't allow us to add a link to an image anymore?
What sort of URL are you using? What are the sharing permissions for the URL that you are using?

@@yagisanatode Thanks for replying. I did a Google Drawing button, published it and got the URL. I've inserted that URL, just like what you've shared in the video. I guess when we publish the image, it is deemed public, right?
@ Are you publishing from a Google Workspace Domain account or from a shared drive? Sometimes the admin can turn off sharing. support.google.com/docs/answer/183965?hl=en-GB You can also test this by going into Incognito mode on your browser and pasting the URL to see if it is accessible.

@@yagisanatode Yes, Workspace Domain. I'm the admin though. Any resources to turn the sharing on? But I got a share link. That means it is on, right? And also, I have published a few Docs before and I had no problem with that.
Hey thanks for letting me know. I've just reviewed all the approaches again. Good news, they still work. I think you are referring to the missing 'Publish to the web' link in Drawing. It has been move to File > Share publish to the web.
