Nice video. I would have liked to see the connection between the new duct work and the actual tie in to the main return.

Exactly. I was wondering how this return air vent tied in and how the air flowed through the filter.

@@supaman881 "Jump ducts". This is interesting. I wasn't aware of these but it makes sense. My 2 story house with vaulted ceilings in the Southwest has terrible duct design. It's so inefficient but I don't have any room to change it without major reconstruction.

@@mtbbiker6401 Same here. I'm in Corona, CA with all three bedrooms upstairs. Only the master bedroom and downstairs TV room get descent air. I had an HVAC tech come inspect it and he said my return is too small for my 4 ton system but recommended adding "dampers" to the plenum that feeds all of the ducts to try and balance the air flow. Doesn't seem like the proper solution if the return is too small.

Nice job framing in the vent intake boots. Could have used zip ties in addition to tape on the end of the ducting. You must have a return upstairs already. I need to do something similar on a 70s vintage home which was built only with heating, no return up high so AC recently installed doesn't work as well upstairs as the hot air has no where to go. I will be jumpering (3) bedrooms and maybe a hallway together and then running down a wooden chimney chase which is only used for hot water heater exhaust now to a lower attic area where I will tie into the main return.

I have seen a lot of register boxes with the fiberglass inside. The boot in this video had no insulation inside. What is the difference between the register boxes with insulation inside them and the boxes with only the metal? My register box has the fiberglass inside of the box and it got a little moldy. Thanks
@santosecheverria6672
@santosecheverria6672 Месяц назад
You might want to get rid of those fiberglass boots that you have and highly recommend you replacing them with the boots that’s shown on the video. They are more efficient and the diameter of the boot where the duct connects to will give you more airflow instead of the fiberglass boots. I’m sure you have a small collar on them as well as a small duct because you can only go so big with those fiberglass boots. Also if you do get those metal boxes all you gotta do is wrap them around with an extra layer of insulation to prevent any condensation. 👍🏽
@davidserpa6738

Should use a panduit strap at the boot to secure the duct to that boot.

Does it matter where to put the return duct in the bedroom? I'd hate to draw in cooler air from the ac vent, I'm not sure if there is a distance you'd want to keep it from, or better to put one near and exterior window or sliding door

@wattsupwiththat1463

Defiantly need to separate the supply and returns. Supplies are better placed near a window or exterior wall. Returns close to the wall so they draw air from the the supply when the door is closed and from the hallway when the door is open.
@rbnjr
@rbnjr Год назад
If added returns don't go thru a mechanical filter assembly then one must be added for each return? I have UV lights at the evaporator but seems like additional filters might be needed.

I need to do a similar project. All three bedroom have no return to the house. Question... can all three bedrooms be connected to one main return? All three of the bedrooms are at the end of a hallway. Hate to make a return hole for each on that hallway. Can these returns get joined together by "Y" ducts?
@KentSchneeveis

Hmm... that's a good question. If the main return was big, like 3 X the size of a regular return I bet that would work fine.

Nice job! Dumb question - when you're up there, you're just keeping your feet/knees/weight etc on the studs and reaching to where you need to work? Did you put down a plywood board or something to perch on? I need to get up there. so far have only been brave enough to peek through the cutout! Thanks!
@KentSchneeveis

Yes, that’s true keeping my feet on the studs one must constantly be mindful. However, there was some plywood up there. It’s important to screw it down. Not a bad idea, for future maintenance workers. I made the mistake of not screwing it down, and it will slip!

Hi - Im not sure about all the details. The HVAC company installing the new heating/air conditioning system asked the home owner to add return air for the bedrooms. They were the brains on the job. I was merely doing what I was told. Ask Valley Heating... www.valleyheating.com/

Can the boots be installed without adding pieces of wood? I would think the sealant would hold it plus the grill on the other side with screws would also hold it right?

I was just connecting the bedrooms to the main part of the house where the furnace is. That was the idea. So the air in the bedrooms could return to the intake of the furnace. That’s what the return air vents were all about. I hope this answers your question. 🧐
