In this video I add some weld on teeth to a bucket and try it out with some grading work.

As an excavator contractor I primarily use tooth buckets, you can rough grade just fine with a tooth bucket. Finish grading as you already know comes best from other equipment. Zero reasons for a smooth edged bucket.

Never used a tooth bucket or a mini skid for that matter. Smooth buckets work just fine in the clay where I live. Smooth buckets are nice for ripping grass and weeds out of the ground. Tooth bucket looks like it would be nice for loosening up dirt for grading.

Pay no attention to the haters. Your teeth help separate the debris from the dirt. One of my favorite you tubers is Andrew Camarata and he pretty much always welds teeth on to his skid steer buckets. Good job on the teeth. Love the channel cuz u take the time to explain what u r doing and why. Good luck on your future jobs.

There's a reason the teeth are only held on with pins. It's a fail safe. If you hit something too solid. The teeth just break off at those points. Instead of breaking the welds or the whole bucket or the tooth itself. Now. With this particular machine... I guess it's not that big a issue. There isn't that much power behind them. But if you use this bucket on your new skid steer. Be careful. Especially when grading... They're also made to be changeable. They make several different types of teeth. Hardened rock specific ones. Blunt rounded ones. Longer ones shorter ones. There's all kinds of teeth. And they are usually all interchangeable... Well. They were until you welded them on. Lol.

I'm still looking for a tooth bucket for the other skid. I have a big swale job with that machine. And I have a harley rake for the big one too that I can't wait to try out!

Shawn, here where I live with all the chert and chert rock you're not going to be able to dig very fast without teeth. Also many times to dig out a basement with a loader you'll wear out a set of teeth. Most everything around here that I have seen has teeth with the exception of a box blade yet most of them have teeth you can drop down to help break things up if needed.

They really have made a difference in how the machine digs.

Where did you get those tooth shanks and what model are they?

I got them from my local HE supply house, Wilson FInley. I called and asked for skid steer bucket teeth, so I'm not sure what the model would be.

Those are 23 or 230 style flush mount teeth. You can see it’s stamped on the actual tooth in the video. If it’s 23 or 230 or 2300 they are almost exactly the same just a different part number.

Do you have the size or number for the tooths?

What welder are you using? 110v or 220v?

This is a lincoln 180 promig on 220v. It's good for little stuff like this but overheats very quickly after a few short minutes of welding.

You shouldn’t grade with a toothed bucket. Plus the clean out and piping will freeze in the winter.

I see my contemporaries doing amazing grading work with their tooth buckets! I have been very impressed so far with what a tooth bucket can do compared to a smooth bucket. Our frost line is very high here in NC, plus our pipes don't hold water. I'm not sure where the basis of your comment is coming from? Perhaps you live in a northern climate?

Hey Steven - I thought about that but I ended up with a harley rake. I found a parts rake and refurbished it. Check out that video.
