Addition Facts That Stick Review: How It Works & A Look Inside

Addition Facts That Stick by Kate Snow is one of my favorite math resources and incredibly effective! See how this 6 week program works, how it's scripted so that you can teach with zero math teaching experience (with pictures of every activity).
I'll walk you through a week, answer common questions, and show you how Kate goes beyond memorizing math facts to teaching kids how to mentally figure out math problems (addition up to 20) by visually regrouping numbers into 5's and 10's. Soon, they see the 10 frame in their minds and know how to regroup numbers so well they can do it in their heads.
The first day of each week there's a scripted hands on lesson using the 10 frame and counters, plus a new game.
Day 2-5 you'll play the same game and do a worksheet from the back.
That's it! We paused our math curriculum for 6 weeks to work on math facts and it paid off BIG time, making our other math so much easier for my then late1st grader.

We use Singapore and have the same thing. I love that they don’t focus on memorization, but at some point he needs to memorize the simple facts 🙈😂 going to try this!

I'm looking for a program to adapt for a visually impaired student and it is such a huge help being able to see inside the book in detail!

I actually have these and now I have confidence to do this with my kiddos. Lol!!! I’m also going to get the curriculum for them as well. We just need something that’s going to work well for them and allow them to grasp math well.

I know how it is to have “extra” curriculum around i intend to use, haha! Totally relate. This one will be well worth it!

We do MB level 1 and I feel like I’m missing so much in terms of math facts! So once we finish her book in a few weeks, we are doing this. lol I’m so glad I found this video!

The author of this also created a math program called Math with Confidence. It's amazing! My son loves it.

Hi this book looks great. I am planning on switching math curriculum for my 6 year old (UK year one, so I guess that's US Kindergarten) and was looking at Math with Confidence First Grade. Should I get both or is all the material in this book taught in Math with Confidence First Grade? I'm tempted to buy both but could do with your opinion as you're familiar with both materials. Thank you.

If you buy first grade math with confidence most all the games are in there. I haven’t done a side by side look to see if every game from addition facts that stick is in there, but I recognized so many from addition facts that stick we’d already learned. I think Kate Snow has also said you don’t need both. MWC has a lot more games in addition to addition facts that stick, and 2nd grade has new fun ones too. But no, I don’t think you’ll need both if you buy the 1st grade level. The only reason I’d buy both, is if you want to possibly do a 6 week review of math facts ever or if you have another child not using math with confidence.

How did you print the worksheets? I have level 1 and waiting for Addition facts that stick. I will be using it for 2 kids

I made copies of the back pages using my printer. It would have been easier to print if I had the digital version as well, but i just made copies of the physical book to save money.

Do you think it would be too confusing to use the ten frame used in this curriculum and then going back to the standard ten frame afterwards? Or would it be easy to swap out the ten frame used here with the standard ten frame? I hope that makes sense!
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Год назад
I think you’d be fine, we’ve used both! But I like Kate’s best because it’s easier to visually see for some reason. Her reasoning is it is helpful in teaching kids to “read” the 10 frame right to left just like they read words. Plus the big black middle line is visually easy to see too.

Also, is this available in a downloadable format?

This looks great. If I used this now as a way to really reinforce these facts, do you think it would then be easier to start Singapore Math, or is this best used with MWC?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Год назад
I think using it before starting your Singapore Math year, or as a break with any math curriculum, would be perfect! I wouldn't do this at the same time as another daily curriculum or it will feel like a lot of daily math. This also has a lot of the same games as MWC curriculum and same strategies, so families who use MWC already don't need to buy this. Some do, mainly for review. And yes, it also comes with a PDF option if you prefer.

I just purchased both the addition and the subtraction books. Can I teach from both books each week or stick with just addition for 6 weeks and move to subtraction the next 8 weeks? I don’t want to confuse my 7 year old daughter but if they can be taught congruently, that would be wonderful. I was just wondering how it was actually designed to be taught.
@LizBlueandHazel

I would do addition first, then move to subtraction. The subtraction methods use addition so it seems important to do those first. For example for 15-8 they might say 8 plus what is 15. They’ll also learn to solve by getting to the nearest 10, by saying 15 minus 5 is 10, minus 3 more is 7. But with the first method addition will help them figure out subtraction.

Did you just copy the pages since you did it with 2 kids? Or is there a pdf for just the worksheets? Thank you
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I made copies for 2 kids! So our original book actually isn't written in and ready to be used with my 3rd and 4th kiddo down the road. It helped if I made copies one week at a time so it was done but I wasn't juggling SO many loose pages at once. You can buy a pdf of the whole book instead of the physical book, not just the worksheets though.

Can I use this prior to starting kindergarten or first grade math
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel 7 месяцев назад
I would not use it prior to kindergarten as it gets hard quickly. It may be fine to use before 1st grade, depending on your child. A lot of people like it to be a summer review the year after 1st grade. Everything in here is taught in 1st grade Math With Confidence (for teaching math facts). So if you did this first, then they may be bored or fly through 1st grade Math With Confidence afterwards. I do not plan on using this with my current first grader who is using year 1 Math With Confidence unless we need more review on addition. I did have great success using this with my oldest first grader about half way through his 1st grade year. He was then 7.5, and we were struggling with the way Singapore Math was teaching me to teach him so I paused Singapore Math, did this 6 week program, and picked back up in Singapore without the frustration. Hope that helps!

So if you’re doing kindergarten math with confidence my kiddo will learn this already? We had to stop TGTB math because it was too fast. So I thought about just getting the kindergarten work book
@LizBlueandHazel

Addition Facts That Stick info/games are incorporated into First Grade Math With Confidence. It’d be much too advanced for kinder. I have a young kinder this year and paused our math because he wasn’t quite getting it or interested. We picked back up using just the teachers guide games and explanations from Level K Math With Confidence (skipped the worksheets this time) and he’s doing much better just a few months later. It’s going much faster with him being a little older and we are zooming through almost a week in one sitting. Just an idea for your kinder if you want a great number base but find other stuff too fast.
