The reason why I think we don't speak up is because we are afraid of what the stylist may do to our hair
@necrotic9433
@necrotic9433 4 месяца назад
Imo If you don't trust the stylist to even have a conversation about whats best for your hair, pick another or do it yourself. Even if you've heard amazing things about them..each hair is different, and you deal with yours daily

You are sitting there the entire time. If they start doing something terrible after speaking up, personally I would leave.

I'm so grateful that you said something and that she was humble and ready to receive it. NO One knows everything. Arrogance and pride is the reason why businesses are struggling now and forcing them to sale everything except the kitchen sink and the baby chair and that's on the way out soon. Black hair is not a cookie cutter situation. I know you and I and so many others are not a stylist but, we love and care and spend a lot of time and money on our hair. Damn!!!! Give us some credit!!!!

I’m so glad you said something! A comfortable partnership that allows candid dialogue is ideal for a stylist-client relationship. I am the same way with my stylist. I realized that she clarifies my hair at each appointment (I go every four months) my last appt in March I told her to go straight with the moisturizing shampoo because I washed my hair the day before yesterday and she listened. I bring in styling products and tools (she uses the Felicia leatherwood but I prefer a paddle brush to detangle) and she uses them! It’s amazing when a stylist listens and tailors to your comfort and preferences🙌🏾

I think the same reason we sometimes don't send incorrect food we order at restaurants back is the same reason we don't speak up in the chair at salons. Will there be repercussions behind speaking up...possibly. Side note: I'd love to hear your thoughts on straight naturals. I'm thinking about jumping down the rabbit hole because it seems some women are able to control split ends, breakage, and retain length a whole lot better than us twist and wash and go girls. My apologies if you've already did a video on it. 💕

Honestly this video came right on time. I went to the salon yesterday for a blow out and trim and i was so disappointed. The last time I went the stylist ATE. But I got a different stylist and... I dont know. The blow out was so tangly, the kind of tangled thats just baked into the hair. I think its because she started at the roots rather than the ends, so by the time she got to the ends they werent stretched and were a bit matted. I had so many single strand knots and Im pretty sure it was from that, because ive done a similar bad job on myself before and I know thats where it comes from. There was a second stylist who did the trim that day, and the way she had to rake a comb through my ends - I have no idea how she found all the damage to cut off. Did I say something though? Nope. Idk. Learned my lesson for next time i guess.

Really appreciate this video Jen. I live in England, UK outside of the big cities. My hair is fragile and thinning mainly due to low doseage chemotherapy meds I take once a week and another Auto immune medication I take twice daily which has as one of its side affects thinning hair. My daughter is bi racial and has thick long lustrous type 3 hair. She also loves colour, she’s a textile artist. Because I live outside london, I can only buy hair online as no stores around me stock quality Black hair products. There are no qualified black hairdressers either in my area. Plenty of braiders and weave stylists. I found a salon online that is owned by a south african white couple who advertised they can wash, cut, condition and silk press Black hair. The wife is a proper colourist and the husband is the cut and style. The wife consulted with me before even putting her hands to my hair. She asked what i wanted and at the time, i just wanted wash, condition & trim. She asked if she could check the condition of my hair and took a couple of strands. She correctly said my hair is normal density and needed a deep moisture condition. She advised that she didn’t know how to do twist out and felt my hair was too fragile for the tension required in a braided weave. She offered to do a colour, ( grey roots), wash, deep condition, silk press and trim on this occasion and next time, she’d arrange for her afro stylist to be there if i wanted the twist out. We had an open honest conversation and she listened. She even wrapped cling film around my hair and put me under their fancy drier. When i say my hair was MOISTURISED for over a week. Her silk press was beautifully done and she did a hair cut in the end because one side of my head was much thinner but longer than the other side. I didn’t even notice that until after the blow dry. One of the best salon experiences I’ve had in my 55 years. And that’s including when I used to live in London and spend BIG money in the fancy central london celebrity salons. The difference is literally because she talked and listened to me. She properly assessed my hair and provided what my hair needed. I’ve got salon appointment on Tuesday and i’m really looking forward to it because I know she looks after me and my daughter as people and does the right things for our hair not just apply the same approach to everyone who walks in.

It probably has something to do with her being White in a traditionally Black field. She will try harder. Many years ago I had my hair blow dried by a white stylist and it was done so gently. I stopped going to Black hairdressers many years ago because I found them too harsh for my sensitive scalp.

Greetings and Happy Sunday Jenn. I love that our Americanized African/ indigenous communities are having conversations about our personal care but if I'm being honest it feels like a weird obsession when it comes to our hair, with all the things happening around us that truly affects our lives SOME of these hair tutorials in my opinion has everything to do with our feelings of powerlessness in certain aspects of our lives so we turn our attention to hair because we can " control " that Right? No we can't even do that correctly. Everyone knows " Healthy " hair starts from within So what are we putting in our bodies and what is it our bodies need and require to function at its maximum. We figure that out then we can begin with what we put on our hair and bodies and really invest time checking out what we are purchasing to use. All curls are not created equally and depending upon what our bodies are doing or depleted from does change how our curls will react. We need moisture and products to assist with hydration, we must know when to clarify our hair from products used, What products helps define our curls without drying them, but also can your hair be cut wet and be even? No one here can tell you that so it's our job to notice what out stylist are doing when we get our haircuts. Learn your own hair language because you are supposed to be the first to know when something isn't going right Then you go to the Dr Well the same thing goes to our hair. Go beyond RU-vid to see whether a stylist is a hairdresser because there's a difference . The stylist may be able to give your locks or tresses beautiful Dos but are your tresses being treated for what it needs? Most important we are in a political election cycle Vote using common sense because what does it mean to have beautiful hair if laws are passed that will not allow us to afford to go to a salon or have access to better quality of food to nourish our bodies or be able to afford products. Support Black Beauty Supply stores if possible and demand distribution companies be black in those stores..We can make everyone else Rich except for one another and there is enough to make everyone finances more.. Let's do better by one another

I'm VERY protective about my 4C Tresses too. I don't allow my Natural stylist to wash my hair or use heat on my coils. That's a job only for me to do because I don't use shampoos with chemicals & I don't ever have to worry about heat damage. Thanks for sharing...

Thanks for sharing! No one tells you to do this or that. You give your options on YOUR HAIR JOURNEY! You never tell anyone this is definitely going to work for you because all hair is different and will react differently with the same products. We are all still trying to figure out are hair. Oh my gosh, I just came to your channel to find a way to take care of my wash and go. I went to a salon on Saturday to have a consultation. Well, we decided to wash condition and cut.I said I am use to having my hair cut dry. She cut it wet because we decided to doing a wash and go. I thought ok, I will try. I said to her I often do a two strand twist. I continue on. I liked some of the curls, but I knew the style would not last. Today, I had to put my hair in a two stand twist. If I ever do go back to her, I will speak my mind.

I went to a stylist for the first time in my 11 years natural. I had to put myself in her hands completely. She did the controversial curly cut and suggested the no oils no butter routine. She suggested a line of products that are expensive as hello. I bought several products at her shop. My hair is now so on point I don’t know what to do with myself. ❤ I do wash and gos ONLY, so this perfect taper is bomb. The regime still feels a bit weird but it’s working. I’m sticking with the pro

I love that for you. I don't want to scare you but many of us started exactly where you are now and ended up with a lot of damage quite rapidly (over a year or so). So word of caution: be very mindful of your hair, in particularly your ends, notice any changes (such as lack of moisture retention) and get the occasional blown out cuts to make sure your ends are in good shape. Good luck with your new journey.

I don't disagree with you speaking up and voicing your concerns regarding your hair. I think the delivery was the issue for some, in the sensationalistic headline of my stylist almost ruined my hair. I think if I were the stylist I would feel hurt by the terminology you used to explain your experience. Also as the stylist I would be hesitant to do your hair again as she may have lost customers based on your review. Once again for me it's not about you explaining your experience and how the clarifying process strip your hair. It's the negative terminology used to deliver the information.

Well you shouldn’t be criticized for sharing your experience at all but I’d like to add I have similar hair to you. A shampoo would drastically affect the feel of my hair and I would think it was damaged when after conditioning it felt oddly dry. Eventually I finally tried olaplex # 3 and now my hair is not as susceptible to drastic changes that can come with clarifying shampoos. It basically behaves now.

It's no shade, but as a cosmetology student, they teach black hair! The problem is that people assume, that the classes are going to focus on a certain demographic! There are a few styling techniques that can be added, but the differences, but I learned about "black" hair! A key issue, is the stylers didn't contain what the hair needed for lubrication after the conditioner! She cleansed your hair, because she didn't know how coated the other products left your hair, and you adjust and move on like you said she did! I will say my hair has been way better since I stopped listening to influencers though. I've been in this space since 2016, and honey the advice truly had me feeling so depressed! I thank yall, for teaching me how to twist, part, braid, Bantu knot, flat twist, and rod set. However, whew the way marketing adjusts to the insecurities and frustrations of the community is truly sad!

I went to a salon for a cut and was extremely disappointed and upset. I consulted with the stylist a few times, even before sitting in the chair for clarification that she completely understood what I wanted. She lied about her technique. I asked did she dry cut. Her dry cutting was an electric razor cutting a whole section of my hair. I knew after that it was a done deal. Also, black natural hair and black permed hair are not equal opportunity treatments! She pulled so much of my hair out during the shampoo session. But what can you do except walk out with wet, unfinished hair? I went in with at least bra strap length hair and came out with hair just barely past my earlobes. I was so hurt and angry. When I showed people the picture I sent her versus what my hair actually looked like, they made light of it by saying she must’ve been on crack that day. It was horrible. But the silver lining of the story is as much as I hate this cut, it really must have been much needed because my hair was so heavy, and weighed down for so long, I absolutely forgot how spirally my curl pattern was. So, as I am intentionally trying to nurture my hair and scalp to promote growth, I’m enjoying the curls.

No I am not trying to grow my hair long but I do focus on health (which ultimately leads to length retention). Even after several haircuts over the past year, my hair has retained a lot of length which can be seen by watching my previous videos (look at last year vs now). It's not always obviously with shrinkage however.

Cut them to try loose natural hair. Stayed loose for 10 years, loved it but too much time and it would not grow past a certain length. Yes, I tried everything under the sun. Got tired of spending so much time on my hair, relaxer was not an option, wigs too uncomfortable for me, braids break off my hair like nothing else. Weaves would be bad for my reputation😜. I had to go back to locs… “what took me so long?” Is all I think of these days. If anything I think your experience was an example of how if this product lineup was used repeatedly it could be damaging. it's also an example of how to recover when mistakes are made. and it is an example that overcleansing ONE time is not irreversible. And quite frankly that is why i didn't watch your last salon visit video in its entirety because the sensationalized title I think was not the best judgment given the heightened distrust, especially with what all has happened recently. You could have easily titled it "How I spoke up because something was off." You and your stylist figured it out together. I agree that stylists need to be open to feedback. However when clients don't speak up and then go full blast online any opportunity to build a harmonious relationship and feedback loop is completely lost. And that's really to our detriment as clients. Stylists will likely go on with the clientele that are happy with them and the one client upset is left reeling without any insightful recourse.
