I see these lyrics this way (based on my own experiences): Adelaide is the "other person". Weak. Who surrenders. Adelaide is the result of dissociation experienced by the singer. "They" are abused by boyfriend. The singer is the one who fights and has the strength to leave this abusive guy. And Adelaide can't win this fight 'cause she is slowly fading away. 'Cause she is only a result of dissociation. The dissociation only happens when the guy beats up the singer.
I wouldn't say that someone who is in an abusive relationship is being annoying about it. Frustrating that they may not listen, but definitely not annoying. Shame on those of you who think it's annoying that someone you care about is being hurt like this. This is why I don't care much for people who pretend to have their friends' best interests at heart when in reality they don't.
As Zwamiboy said, this isn't about a friend--it's about a person disassociating from her old self. She has to kill the weak part of herself, the too-gentle person she used to be who has no borders and bows to others' needs, in order to leave. She's not saying he can't hold her friend down, she's saying "YOU CAN'T HOLD *ME* DOWN, BOY." In other words, it's not her friend leaving--SHE is leaving. SHE is done with his shit. That makes it awesome and empowering rather than the negative interpretation caused by misunderstanding the song. This song is about someone taking their power back from their abuser.
This song reminds me of Chara, Frisk and Sans from Undertale.. and possibly Flowey. Chara is the singer, Sans is the " man, " and Frisk is Adelaide. Idk where Flowey comes in-
