Great vehicles!! I had a bit to do with this program and I can tell you for certain that these vehicles had to meet a stack of requirements that a LandCruiser or Defender just couldn't meet and that could be why Toyota and Land Rover never put in bids for the Land 121 Project!!! Here's some examples off the top of my head: - GVM of the wagon is 4,600 kg, the 4x4 cab chassis is 4,800 kg, and the 6x6 is 6,500 kg (from the factory) - Centre, Rear, and Front difflocks and high/low range transfer case (from factory) - They can all be underslung from a helicopter (2 x lift eyes on the front and 2 on the sides/rear - from factory) - Can ford up to 750 mm fresh water (which is not a huge number) but they can have engine turned off and restarted while at this depth (at 4:33 you can see the bend in the exhaust to stop water going back in the engine) - 24 V electrical system (from factory) to power military radios and comms equipment - Manual Tyre Inflation System (from factory) with compressor/tank behind the seats and a coily air hose at each wheel for inflation/deflation to set values - Tiedown provisions to allow for transport in military aircraft (from factory) - Life of Type of 30 years Don't get me wrong, I like Defenders (the older ones) and Cruisers (would love a 79 series myself) but these G-Wagons were built to meet the Australian requirement set and are pretty bloody good!!!
@@gbangerau not in the civilian production configuration that ur probably used to seeing, but they definitely use them, they literally make an appearance in this video
@@dandesso8926 I agree. The Land Cruiser is bullet proof. Great ride. But, for some reason, whenever the Discoveries hit 100,000 they just seem to implode.
no they are just trying to prove to the people that they didnt waste tonnes of money on a vehicle that should only be driven on someones front lawn or on the road.
@@AJ-qn6gd is that supposed to be impressive now? Im taking a normal g over a normal hilux anywhere offroad and am happy with my 3 diffs Im also taking the unimog above the damn toyota pickups Australia went for both back in the day.
@@kloschuessel773 I’m not trying to say a Hilux is superior to a military spec G Wagen but it will do 90%of what a G Wagen can do at considerably less cost. It’s off the shelf, it’s simple, it’s reliable, it’s robust.
Seems like drivers don't have a lot of offroad experience. Doesn't look like they have reduced tire pressure at all. 2:16 You don't brake at that situation you put in the 1 gear + reduction.
hopefully they don't fall apart like they did when b they tasted them going through the Simpson desert suspension system failed. spear wheel mounts cracked. not bad for one houndred thousand plus dollars
If you read the article, it was the AMG G-Wagens that broke down because they had street suspensions and the spear wheel mount is attached to the doors in those cars, but they also had a military spec G Wagen that did the trip without any problems.
they werent amg spec, they were g350's and all except one failed in some way or another on the trip, ur right the one which didnt fail was the upgraded version but g350's are $120k+ vehicles in aus with no mods, landcruiser 70 series are $70k for base model and can be modified just as much if not more. u could have a fully kitted out milspec landcruiser for the price of the base model g wagon, but hey taxpayer money doesnt matter anyway right?!
Toyota fucked themselves when they produced a commercial ute that couldn't carry a feather pillow without blowing their GMV. hopeless. Cruiser Upgrades still only get you so far.
Thing is billy The cruiser can tow 3500kg These mercedes can only tow 2500kg And at least 400kg heavier at a guess than a cruiser. Yes toyota should have a higher factory GVM. But look at any of the dual cab market. They are all low gvms
Why doesn't Australia just hand over every cent that is to be spent on defense to the Germans and say Fritz we are too stupid as a people now so we need you to think and make and do everything for us , because over the next four years we will be spending 650 billion on welfare and that is more important so we need to keep defense spending to a minimum so we can pork barrel the electorate .
Uk has done the same, we now use MAN trucks when once we had Foden, Scammell and Bedford and of course Land Rover. From what I've read, the ADF don't like the G wagon as much as the Perentie, while the Perentie could break down at least it could nearly always be fixed in the field, no electronics and simple engineering and it was of course built in Australia.
@@andicog you can try the grenadiers soon. Maybe they will start a welsh factory if the government buys some so they can afford building a factory and educating some workers Man trucks are better than those old british manufacturers… They weren’t very good. You do realize that you never had that much good self built equipment to begin with? Especially at the price point… Probably spitfire and hurricane were the last good vehicles. Harrier is yours? Landies were expensive jeeps. Now owned by china and india.
@@kloschuessel773 And they say the Germans have no sense of humour! You have one, you make me laugh! Before talking about educating Welsh workers, please educate yourself, while VW made beetles, NSU prince's and swing axled Mercedes Britain made world beating advanced cars, front wheel drive, Hydrogas and hydroelastic suspension, disc brakes (a British invention) and 4 wheel drive with abs years before the Audi Quattro (Jensen FF), we also had active suspension development at lotus years before anyone else. G wagons here are bought by minor league drug dealers or footballers to drive between home and stadium. I'll avoid the Grenadier, I'll still with my Defender, easy to fix without the main dealer, cheap on parts and appreciates in value. 👍🇬🇧
