And so begins Season 5 of Ancient DOS Games! :D
...with a highly requested game I ended up having mixed feelings with... go figure. :P
Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at The Dig, an inventory-based adventure game created and released by LucasArts in 1995, even though development of the game began all the way back in 1989!
This game's actually serves as a good example as to how nostalgia can taint one's opinion about something. Once you know how to play through this game, many of its flaws can be forgiven, but as someone who never played through it before, its flaws are so incredibly apparent that it made it extraordinarily difficult to make progress and revealed just how poor the story was despite the incredible visuals and music everything is set to.
------------------------------------------
Additional Information and Corrections:
* I actually DID read the manual... eventually... around the 3/4 way through mark not long following starting to use a walkthrough; that's how I found out about the period key for skipping dialogue. I meant to phrase that paragraph in the script to reflect that it's only a major issue IF you don't know about the period key, but for some reason I failed to do that and it only occurred to me a full 20 hours after this video went up. Guess I should start TRIPLE-PROOFING my scripts or something. :B
* Turns out the Steam release does actually work in ScummVM by default now without any extra effort, but my initial testing showed it didn't. The trick is that you have to tell ScummVM where "The Dig.exe" is located, as opposed to the game data as you normally would when setting up a game to run in ScummVM. The hex editing trick to recreate DIG.LA0 still works too. :B
* If you'd like to get the Steam release of the game, navigate your way here: store.steampowe...
* If instead you want the GOG release, follow this link: www.gog.com/ga...
* I wasn't too clear on this in the video as I intended to be, but the main difference between the GOG and Steam releases are that the GOG release is designed specifically to work with ScummVM, whereas the Steam release utilizes its own separate program for processing the game's data files. I don't know if the GOG release includes everything needed to run the game in DOSBox or not.
* For those unfamiliar, "SCUMM" stands for "Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion" and was the scripting system LucasArts originally created and kept updating for their adventure titles.
* For some incredibly bizarre reason, this game's save files are over 100 KB large... How in the world does a game like this require save files THAT big?! o_o
* One oddity in the game I didn't elaborate on is that whenever you engage a conversation with someone using a com system, Boston Low's voice becomes that of someone on the com, even though he's standing right there in front of you without a spacesuit on. This was doubtlessly intentional, but an odd design choice all the same.
* I also failed to elaborate on the game's PDA feature, which is used to communicate with your team members when you're not in the same room, plus it has a Lunar Lander styled mini-game you can play.

Lucasarts: "You'll skip the dialogs the way we want, *_PERIOD_*."

Love the Michael Z Land soundtrack on this one, as Kris mentioned, impossible to picture the game without that music. I have the audio CD remaster of the soundtrack, but while it is good, I prefer the more simplistic version on the game.

@Darkstar2342 7 лет назад
how to skip dialogue is actually in the manual ... you should try reading those from time to time, this is a recurring theme I see in your videos whenever you're ranting about a bad game ;-) You can also set the speed for the text display with the + and - keys... I totally agree with the voice acting and the conflict-inciting characters... although IMHO the latter is actually a Hollywood thing, just look at any recent TV series, chances are you'll notice it there too :)

I completely agree with you. I consider myself at least decent with adventure and puzzle games, usually have to consult a walkthrough once tops. I gave up on the dig because I became so frustrated with the first puzzle, the symbols on the wall. No direction whatsoever.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 7 лет назад
+Anthony Micari That particular puzzle wasn't so much "difficult" or "unfair" as it was "tedious as Hell", since without knowing which of the four possible doors it's used with you can end up having to try the combination you learn on ALL of them if you get unlucky... which was what happened to me. Plus, because you can only cycle the symbols forwards, not backwards, and VERY slowly, if you accidentally skip the right one it's FIFTEEN to scroll back around. :P

Pixelmusement Yeah I usually have a higher tolerance but just got fed up. I had a sense the entire game was going to be like that and checked out early. You have confirmed my suspicions!
@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin 7 лет назад
Hmm, I seem to remember the rods being colour coded with the doors. But yeah, it was tedious all the same - would have been a good time to introduce us to holding down the mouse button to rapidly change the shape, then _maybe_ I would have figured out the light bridges right from the get go, rather then *just before* turning on the opening the EYE. Yeah, I was using the Trams the whole game - good thing the screens are so beautiful and I figured out the double click speed travel. It's amazing I still love the game with all it's issues, but I was really drawn into the story, setting, characters and mystery and many of the puzzles were fun. *Loads* of wandering, but I toughed it out in the days before walkthroughs.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 7 лет назад
+Magus Marquillin That again leads into why I have mixed feelings about this game because I absolutely adore the visuals and music; it's some of the best I've seen and heard in these old DOS titles! :O

That right click delay... this sounds like a dosbox issue as I don't remember that happening at all on vintage hardware.
@Pixelmusement

While I adore this game, I really wish I had an option to fast-forward the game at times, because the tediousness of walking back-and-forth seriously killed the enjoyment of the game for me. That, and some obtuse puzzles.
@UltimatePerfection

WesleyB Crowen Yeah, walk speed in many of the old adventure games is painfully slow. Or new ones, especially these made with ags.

If you double-click an exit, you walk there instantly. This was specifically added to The Dig.
@wesleybcrowen

Except it didn't work..? I clicked the shit out of exits to make the game go faster and I swear it didn't teleport me. It was years ago and maybe I played the crappy windows interpreter version or whatever that didn't allow me to travel quickly.
@rancid83
@rancid83 7 лет назад
Huh, that's weird. I had a few friends of mine play The Dig on ScummVM last year (alcohol was involved) and they made heavy use out of the double-click. Then again, I had no issue getting it to work on ScummVM either like Kris did, so maybe its ports are just that hit-and-miss.

Yep, played the game years ago with ScummVM and double clicking made you teleport to the exit instantly. Just to be sure I checked gamefaqs and it's referenced in a 10 years old FAQ too.
@rodrigosebastianpagano8198
@rodrigosebastianpagano8198 7 лет назад
The Dig requires a lot of lateral thinking. If this isn't your thing then avoid. Is on my list of adventures completed without a walkthrough. I think that the game trolls the player with a couple of puzzles but you quickly learn that you have to try everything. Not Discworld-level of anything, but a very logical anything. The game's is pretty fair. I think that really makes you feel on an alien planet, and that's the most awesome thing to say about the game. Immersion is total. BTW the turtle puzzle is really straightforward. You see something dead, you try to revive it with the life crystal, it dissolves because something is not right, then you logically tries to put together the corpse.

15:32 Using the rod makes perfect sense. It is used to jam the panel down, the weight of the rod doesn't matter.
@GeminiDoesEverything

But the way it's drawn, you wouldn't be able to tell. It looks like it's just sort of haphazardly laying halfway across the panel.
@DarioRuellan

Yes, I was also confused by the graphics, but again, when you start to figure out the puzzle, you are really thinking about weight, since there is no indication you can jam the thing.

+Avabeth McGhee Actually, I was just running out of air by the end. I think I had to do multiple takes with that one. Ah yes The Dig, the one Lucas Arts adventure I still haven't played through. Only got it 10 years ago (for some reason I've had most Lucas Arts adventures back in the the day, but not The Dig, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Monkey Island 4 which I finally got around 2005 or so). And as I played too many adventures with a walkthrough as a kid I wanted to play this without one. But the whole game felt off to me and I did not get very far. I just took a look at the GOG releasse, it seems like it has everything needed to play it in DOSBox, but as with all their releases the use ScummVM you need to copy some files around after the game is installed. Because they put the files needed for DOS but not needed for ScummVM in a seperate directory in the game install directory. But I haven't tried if it works.

As crazy as it sounds.. I actually read the novelization of this game. In fact, I've read the novelization of a few games.. including the first Halo game (since the second book in a three-book set was basically written in a way that followed Master Chief through the entirety of the game), and.. Descent. As in the six-dimensions-of-freedom sci-fi robot shooting thing. Oddly enough, the books for The Dig and Descent were pretty good. The Halo one not so much.
@Pixelmusement

+White Rhino PSO Nothing crazy about that, but it is definitely a limited market as far as novelizations of games and movies are concerned. :B

It honestly sounds like logical puzzles aren't for you - I shudder to think what you think about the Myst series, because boy did they include a lot of alien like logic that only made sense after you figured out a baseline reference. And I like that about these games - Standard human logic doesn't always apply, but you will start to discover patterns, different kinds of logic. (And I say that as someone who never quite managed to complete Myst as a kid, and had to revisit it almost two decades later)
@rancid83
@rancid83 7 лет назад
It's also funny that he mentions the "use rod with loose plate" puzzle. It actually gets even worse: I discovered that you can't even *try* to hold the plate down with an object if you haven't watched the Map Room clip about that particular spire.

Loving the new intro/info box graphics. Really nice use of the headroom for HD video. I've not really played The Dig much - I think I just did the intro at most. Now I can't help but wonder if that was because I was experiencing the issues you highlighted with the puzzle/UI/etc design, but perhaps at a more subconscious level. Truth be told, despite the presentation, it really feels underwhelming, especially with all the classic games Lucasfilm/LucasArts released prior to this.
@MarianoDevourment
@MarianoDevourment 3 года назад
Quite unfair/biased review. 1) I never had any issues with the inventory (also you can press i to bring it up or close it if opened) 2) you can speed up text and if you double click exit spot it would exit the area "instantly" 3) your lack of imagination to solve puzzles is not the game's fault 4) the idea of puzzle solving in an extraterrestrial world is not having easy hints on how to solve things (although talking to other characters might give you some lead) 5) characters are really good, it is what made the interaction with them and story progression interesting (all conflicting with each other), and very regular human behaviour instead of white knight for honor. 6) The story is amazing 7) it has (if I remember correctly) 2 endings. I could beat that game without walkthroughs and I was like 12 years old at most. I can only agree about the game having some annoying backtrack. PD: the panel that lowers when you stand on it... The panel is the ONLY panel that has 2 lines on it, (like double quotes)... it does stand out among the others. the item "holding it down" actually is a rod stuck diagonally to obstruct it to rise. PD2: door panel changing shapes... the rods actually tells you what shapes you need to input in the door panels. You not liking the game doesnt make it bad. Yes I know the video is old but I needed to address wrong statements made in this video.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 3 года назад
This was my first time playing the game, so... how in the world could I be biased? Also, I didn't say the game was "bad", I said it gave me mixed feelings as there's definitely a lot to like here so it's understandable that tons of people will have good memories of this game. What you interpret as "wrong" statements are your own differences in opinion, not factual proof to the contrary, though I will admit I missed the "i" key for the inventory and the double-clicking to advance screens faster, which would definitely have alleviated some of the backtracking. :B
@MarianoDevourment
@MarianoDevourment 3 года назад
@@Pixelmusement you can be biased based on other people reviwes, other lucas arts games, or being a Sierra fan. And I said wrong statements when you said things that were... well actually wrong (like the rod in the panel). And saying puzzles are bad or having no hints therefore it sucks, its also wrong. About characters personalities it is totally subjective there, like it or not doesnt make them bad. As I wrote before... not understanding a game or being bad at a game doesnt make it bad. The Dig is one of the best adventure games ever made. For its story, puzzles, chars and overall quality. Example: I hate minecraft, I dont like how it looks nor how it plays... but it would be wrong if I say the game has bad controls, graphics are awfull and crafting is poorly thought. Thats what you did in this review. The things that were true were the backtracking and voice acting. But hey, im not debating tastes. Other reviews like in strategy games you approach it better than this, aknowledging you werent very good at those games and basing your review on what you managed to achive. Anyway... An interesting thing on the "com/radio" when you are outside the space shuttle... it has a mini game: "lander" :p

Watching someone else play through this game well is more enjoyable then actually playing it, at least that's how it was for me. On the rod puzzle, I think he jammed the rod into the side of the panel, but graphics of the time couldn't convey that clearly. Also, why did you want to run the game in DOSBox as opposed to the Steam program? Are there problems with it?
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 7 лет назад
+Summer Laverdure The Steam version has a scaler applied which IMHO looks absolutely terrible, plus I've heard the music quality isn't as good in it but I didn't test it long enough to figure that out for certain, plus it's important to me to have appropriate DOSBox configuration details in these episodes. That said, this game definitely runs better in ScummVM than in DOSBox. :B

What you said about The Dig is interesting. I don't agree on one aspect about what you said about it. The fact that you had mixed feelings about it. Even if a game looks good and sound good I won't give it special treatment. A game with bad mechanics is a bad game. Modern games done today, even if they look good, if they are badly done, they get no special treatment. Its bad, its just bad and thats it. You may tell me its an old game but that doesn't give it an excuse. If a developer didn't make it correctly then its still a bad game. We can't just give it a free pass because "ohh look, 3d graphics...ok it balances every other negative aspect". Not saying thats what you did of course but still an interesting point you brought...in a weird sense.

Strange that you complain about alien logic, puzzles and UI but give generally favorable opinion about Star Trek: 25th Anniversary where these problems are much worse (in my opinion) :P
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 7 лет назад
+KainXVIII The main difference is Star Trek's characters gave you advice and clues as to what you should be doing. In The Dig, you get almost NO help, combined with the interface not always indicating when you're able to do something in the first place.

Sometimes they give (mainly Spock), most of the time don't =)

Huh, didn't expect this video to be so negative. Personally, I had little difficulty with the puzzles, with a few exceptions. Compared to other point & click titles, this was pretty easy to me.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 3 года назад
The funny thing is that it's nearly impossible for anyone with experience with this game to go back and fairly judge the difficulty; as is the case with any inventory-based adventure, because you're GOING to remember how certain aspects of everything work, even if not the solutions themselves. Going into this for my first time there were some major inconsistencies which made it hard/impossible to know what it was I was even supposed to be doing. If I was to ever replay the game I wouldn't run into ANY of those issues because my brain's been prepped to handle them now. :P
@RoboticMagus
@RoboticMagus 3 года назад
@@Pixelmusement Actually, I played it only once. I played a bunch of point and click titles over the years. Although I'm experienced with the genre now, I wouldn't say I'm very good with them. There are almost always moments where I get stuck and resort to use a guide. Not surprising, with the infamous moon logic of the genre. This game was easier to me. The puzzles are a bit different from regular P&C titles. Maybe that made it easier for me and harder for you?
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 3 года назад
@@RoboticMagus Not impossible. The main issue I had with the puzzle design here was the inconsistency between on-screen prompting and the processing of solutions, plus there was that one puzzle with the floor panel you had to wedge down which just aggravated me from a physics standpoint, like that should NOT have been the solution given the situation demonstrated. :/
@RoboticMagus

@@Pixelmusement Yeah, there is no way to defend that floor tile puzzle! XD

Definitely a game that fails to deliver on its promise. You spend the game feeling everything should feel more epic, more engaging, more je ne sais quoi.

probably the "weakest" release of the lucas arts adventure games, with the problems with the interface, dialogues, and puzzles.. and considering the massive backing behind it from Mr Spielberg! Shame as l was thinking about getting this game, but l'll probably just watch a walkthrough instead!!! Makes me wonder how come they never released a star wars point and click adventure? As they did with lndiana Jones?
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 7 лет назад
+yuvraj01 Steven Spielberg became less and less involved as this game moved forwards, considering how long it was taking. I don't believe he had any input at all on the finalized story, but I could be mistaken on that point. As for why Star Wars never got a point and click, I can think of a few reasons and I think the most prominent one is that Star Wars really is about action, and trying to put action into an inventory adventure rarely works out well. :P
@jointhe6461
@jointhe6461 7 лет назад
The closest they came to that was with Yoda Stories.
@yuvraj01
@yuvraj01 7 лет назад
Yeah but so is lndiana jones, and he got a fate of atlantis, so l can't see why star wars couldn't get the point and click treatment interspersed with some action sections if need be..

Great and indepth video, but I couldn't help but notice the change. I'm not a fan of your new overlays. They look like Double Fine's take on a redesign of a classic title. Sterile and soulless.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 7 лет назад
+Crimson Red The overlay's change every season and I may still tweak these ones when I get a chance. You can tell how happy I am with the overlays I create by looking for the "version" identifier. Season 3 and 4 have only a single digit, but Season 2 and now 5 have a decimal number attached to indicate revisions. ;)

With all due respect i think maybe you shouldn't play adventure games since you always rant about their difficulty. Adventure games are fun and entertaining only for a specific group of gamers which excludes me and clearly you too. It is like you reviewing Unreal games and telling that they are too fast to be fun, and should be slower.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 7 лет назад
+babal1ty Uh... So... Normality, Space Quest, King's Quest, Full Throttle, and Sam & Max count as games I ranted about, hunh? I'm pretty sure my ratio of adventure games I enjoyed vs. not enjoyed on ADG favours the enjoyed side. I'd've been more forgiving on The Dig if the story was better or the characters were more likable, though I do understand that those aspects are more a matter of opinion than fact though.

We are all here to listen Kris rant about everything :D Turned out this game give him plenty of material, and I agree about almost everything he pointed out: back in the day, this game really felt sub-par in comparison to other LA releases in terms of game design.
