Why is sleeping well such a challenge for people with ADHD, and what can we do about it? In this webinar with Prof. Sandra Kooij, we discuss this all important question and:
• What is the late sleep phase in ADHD?
• Is ADHD actually a problem of the biological clock?
• Melatonin and other medications - do or don't?
• What is light therapy and is it useful?

Weird enough I just can seem to try hard enough at life… thank you for helping me know I’m screwed sideways.

I followed the sleep protocol. Used melatonine. Got 8 hours of sleep a night. No cafeine, no alcohol, exercise. And now I feel 1000% better. No more meds for me. Ask if you have questions.

Are you still going strong or have you made any changes? 😊

I disagree, you don't remove the people from the diagnosis because they sleep better, you try and get everyone with ADHD to sleep better. I did the tests first thing in the morning and still ended up in the 5th percentile! That doesn't go away with sleep - you may be able to mask your deficits better, but they are still there.

Awesome webinar! Sandra, thank you so much for that information 🙏 I’ve recently learned about ADHD and I understand that in your talks describe all my life. I always thought that something was wrong with me and these were just my own problems with root-causes from childhood. I always blamed myself for being different in some way , chaotic, dreaming, with low self-esteem, anxious, emotional and others were so calm, focused and practical. Sleeping problems (delayed sleep, insomnia), chronic exhaustion, light sensitivity, problems with thyroid gland have always been my companions throughout all my adult life. Wow, this is eye-opening!

SO IMPORTANT Pity missed this talk ... Sleep has always been a major issue with me i used to sleep with radio on or music etc Regardless of exercise ......since i worked in ski resort, army cadets, full on exercise ALL DAY but stll unable to get to sleep Since bad sleep lack sleep creates all kinds of mental issues hence its the main torture technique ( leaves since no marks, destroys your will, mind etc ) and stress training in military Spec Ops ie exhaustion and lack of sleep and ability to function. After days or weeks lack of sleep will break 99.9% and eventually you WILL die.

Try to meditate a little, it helps with sleeping habits (works for me, I'm ADHD too). Of course is not the magic pill but it will help you a little.

Use 3mg slow melatonine No cafeine no alcohol. Do exercise. Eat healthy. Go to bed at the same time. Get up at the same time. Resolve mental issues.

The diagnosis needs to be based on objective tests of attention such as the ones I did, one for selective attention that meant 3 minutes to go along rows of silhouettes and circle a particular one; or where a letter flashes up on a screen and you press the space bar, except if it is an X; I was able to mask very well, but even though I understood the methodology of these tests, I couldn't game them, they took away all my masking and crutches: not being able to go over things again and correct them, for example.

That's utterly wrong! There's no test that can diagnose ADHD with high sensitivity and specificity. Tests are not of diagnostic value. There are many people with ADHD who score normal or better on those tests. Diagnosis is clinical.

I hope someone does some study that cracks the code on how to invert perverse sleep. That's what I am digging the internet for.

"Melatonin for late sleep" - there 10:00 am and 12:00 am (midnight) should be meant.

A little disappointed to hear Dr. Kooij said it's too complicated to tell audience how to use low dose melatonin. I'm seeking an instruction on low dose melatonin, since I heard a little bit about it in another talk given by her, and really wanted to give it a try.

I'm not sure how much I trust this talk as Sandra Kooij uses the outdated diagnostic term 'ADD' to differentiate between ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive, or combine type. Kooij also compares the diagnostic statistics between the United States and Mexico, claiming that those who reside in sunnier locations are less likely to have ADHD. Comparing the diagnostic capability and availability of two countries with different healthcare standards, systems, and availability to make an absolute claim is absurd. I believe there is truth to this seminar, though I would be hesitant about taking everything to heart.

First argument: Maybe she just wanted to cut it short. Second argument: I agree!

No, the study from Arns et al (2013) is about several states inside and outside of USA. So it is not only compared to Mexico. BUT there is a metastudy of 82 studys which did not find any correlation of sun and adhd prevalence (Hoffmann MS, Polanczyk GV, Kieling C, Dos Santos IP, Willcutt EG, Rohde LA, Salum GA: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and solar irradiance: a cloudy perspective. Biol Psychiatry. 2014 Oct 15;76(8):e19-20. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsych.2013.07.044. PMID: 24267411) This is a strong incidence for me that the one study of Arns et al should be looked at with caution.

I don't know why we still relate sleep apnea with heavier weights when lighter weights also produce apnea. I even struggle more to understand why we recommend weight loss when 85-95% of people who try to lose weight, do gain more weight than they lost in the long term. It's a very bad recommendation for our health to engage in this constant weight loss/gain cycle. When we try to lose weight despite enough sleep and medication, we work against our biology which tends to preserve their most stable weight regardless of how high the weight that is. The skin also informs the body of light around it.

The information on melatonin is not fully accurate. You want to have it prescribed because a lot of the non regulated sources of melatonin have been shown to been far under or over listed dosages
