Many parents have questions about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and are looking for guidance on how to identify it and care for a child with the disorder. We interviewed Dr. Barbara Calkins on Periscope today so she could share what parents need to know about ADHD. This interview was conducted by Korre Johnson, digital engagement manager, at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

My son has ADHD. He's 8 and I always suspected something was different about him but didn't know what it was. When he was first diagnosed I was a bit defensive about it because I had built up a negative stigma about ADHD through things I'd heard from others. Now having researched it extensively I see that he falls into so many of the traits of adhd that he almost definitely has it. Some days are better than others, his personality is amazing and he's extremely smart, but the lack of attention, inability to stay in mainstream school, inability to listen to and follow rules, the hyperactivity and how loud he is really is overwhelming sometimes. Equally some days I just think wow he's so unique and so brave and so confident and so insightful and always sees outside the box and I'm fascinated by him. I try to highlight his strengths, praise him a lot for the things he can do and the good behaviour and try to teach him how to conquer things he finds difficult. I try to encourage him that there's a time and a place to be high energy and times when he needs to be respectful and listen. It's tough going and there's never an easy day but for the most part he is doing well and learning gradually and he has a heart of gold beneath all the drama! If you're another adhd parent then keep going, it's tough sometimes when you feel you're always defending your child and always repeating yourself but they need love, support and guidance not judgement. X

I wish I could send this to my mom cause she works in a hospital but has such a negative stigma around adhd and she won’t research or see that adhd effects everything not just focus, anytime I mention my adhd my mom gets pissed and says I’m normal there is nothing wrong with me, and I need to stop labeling myself or lowering my standards for myself, she told me to not use it as an excuse. It’s not an excuse, it’s an explanation as to why I think, act, behave the way I do, why I talk loud why it’s hard to focus, and I’m not saying I can’t do it I’m just saying it’s a little harder for me so I’m gonna find a different way to do it, and she hates that i “use adhd to label myself, I’m glad their are parents who aren’t like this, and choose to learn about what’s happening with their child to help in the best way they can!!

When I tell my parents about my problem with school and everything because of ADHD, and everyone is like "no you are just lazy" or "you are deaf" which really upsets me, I always fidget things, I can't pay attention, it's really annoying.
@shmexyshrimp6828

Yooooo. I get that ALL THE TIME. People always tell me I’m deaf. I dont pay attention to what’s going on or what they’re saying and I’m like “what” and they’re like “ARE YOU DEAF????” “YOUR SO DEAF” “YOU NEED A HEARING AID”. One of my old friends did that every single day at lunch and kept calling me “deaf head” and saying I was deaf and kept yelling at me. It pissed me off so I told her to shut the fuck up before I make her deaf...

What about support for us, the parents? I’m like an abused partner (used to be called battered wife syndrome) because of my son. He’s always acting out, screaming and carrying on. I’m over it. I’m grieving for the child and life I thought I could have. If I’m totally honest, had I known what he’d be like, I wouldn’t have had children at all.

Siobhán Murphy Hey Siobhán, I can completely understand where you are coming from. The parents are also judged by society without knowing they’re full story. People might make rude comments about how your not a good parent or give you dirty looks. These people don’t know how much stress you go through everyday with your child. Please know that these peoples opinions don’t matter. They would never understand what you go through. Raising a child with ADHD is a full time job. One thing I got used to was not caring what other people think, because they can look at you and your child and think or say whatever they want, but they don’t know your story’s. As a parent there has been countless Extremely tough times. But please know that your child’s behavior that they display, they can’t control. My child was truly out of control. Always getting in trouble and getting yelled at by everyone everyday. As a mom I can tell you that they receive so many negative comments a day and that just piles on to there symptoms which gives them also an insane amount of stress. The most important thing I would like to share with you is that at times I constantly was rethinking parenting and raising my child. But now at the end of the line I can tell you I would never stop raising my child for the world. ALL THESE HARD TIMES PAYED OFF! In elementary-middle school he failed almost every single class and the school kept pushing him on because they knew he had it in him to put up good grades they just weren’t showing. In high school however things changed, he got on the right medicine and succeeded with a 3.9 gpa. And is now a brain surgeon. Please no matter how tough times get, never stop believing in your child. IT ALL PAYS OFF TRUST ME! Please right me back with updates and/or other problems and I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. I will always be here for you Siobhán and your child ❤️!

My son Braelin has this. Hes 9yrs old but Ive noticed something was different from even age 1. Its very stressful and aggrivating. Sometimes i get upset but then i have to remind myself that he can't help it. Its the constant talking and going from room to room making a distaster that have given me many panic attacks. Stick in there parents.

Ashley Seme patience is key. I was diagnosed when I was 6 and have had it ever since. My parents are “old school” and have the philosophy of “tough love”. This worked very well with my older brother and sister (both being very successful at this stage in their lives.) However, while I love my parents resent the way they treated and acted towards me growing up. (I moved out at 18 and never looked back.) Things like, “I don’t understand why you don’t listen” or “you never listen” and “You’re wasting your potential.” All of these really made think I was stupid as kid because I would listen often times I remembered what they said but something else just got my attention. I would suggest little incentive reminders to keep them motivated and focused. Also if your son is on medication don’t say things like “just take your medication” that hurts self esteem greatly. I remember feeling and still feel as though my parents never loved me for me (without the meds).

I have 2 friends Leen and Catharine, Catharine makes fun of me because I have ADHD but I stay friends with her because Leen wants to, one time they got in a fight then Catharine said something bad about me then Leen said “imagine how hard life would be like if you had a disability” then Catharine says “yeah but I don’t” and I think she does just one that makes her really violent because she always hit Leen when they’re arguing, the last fight we had she did something really bad to Leens arm, every time they argue my brain just feels so much pain, like emotionally I doubt you get what I mean, like when you want to cry but you can’t then it’s just your head crying, it makes me really upset how Leen and Catharine just fight every week then the next week or next day they’re friends again, Catharine still bullies me from having ADHD from this day, today I told Leen how I felt about what’s Catharines doing, I then told her to remember all of the arguments they had, but putting this in the comments on RU-vid is starting to make me feel guilty of reminding Leen of all the bad times she had with Catharine... Edit: hey guys, thanks for being there for me Leen stopped being friends with Cathrine over The last few months she officially ended their friendship, again, thank you all for being there for Me I love you all ❤️

You have to protect yourself from people like that. You’re worth it . Never put up with people bringing you down or hang around people who make you feel sad . It’s best to find new friends and avoid them . You don’t have to fight or argue with them just avoid them and try to find new friends . Your friend who is depressed needs to know this to but you have every right to not hang around her when the friend who makes everyone feel bad is around. Someone needs to tell an adult what’s going on. Usually people who hurt others are hurting themselves and it may take a kind adult to help her . Your job though is to protect yourself . I’m glad she’s moved away though . Hopefully you and your friend can have some peace but if you ever find yourself around another person like this just know it’s ok to not interact with them and to find new friends to hang out with if they are allowing such people in their lives. This can damage your heart and spirit more than you know . If you want a happy life , surround yourself with happy kind people . 💜🙏🏼
@tinahalle3575
@tinahalle3575 4 года назад
When I said “ this can damage your heart and spirit ...” i was talking about being around people who say unkind things to you . Cut them out of your life. Your other friend would have to realize if she can’t cut toxic people out if her life and it’s affecting her other friends then she might have to lose you’re company when the toxic person is around . You could still care for your friend and try to get her to see that she should protect herself to but your friend should understand why you don’t want to be around the one who puts you down . Sometimes people just don’t understand until someone else sets boundaries .

It's extremely strange for a child to be easily distracted when something they're not interested in is going on. Probably the strangest is when they don't listen to a teacher's lecture and instead want to play. Your best bet is to get them on drugs to make them pay attention.

It's not fair to me because due to my parents sending me away all the time because I can't live up to their religious standards, and due to that I have 9 credits in school and I'm a Junior in High school and I'm spose to have almost 20... You have to wonder if it's even purposeful depending on their ages. Lots of the time I say things I regret isn't because I premeditated it, but rather because my tongue manufactured the sentence and let it loose before my brain could review it and say "maybe I shouldn't say that...". If they're particularly immature children then I could see fights and arguments starting easily. Luckily both my siblings had already moved out by the time I was three.

I feared my daughter being on medication for adhd but I had to also stop and think I'm setting her up for failure by not atleast trying. I can control the strength and even if she needs to continue to take them so why not give it a try. Why make your child suffer because you can't handle them or get frustrated with them because there behaviors when its as simple as getting the help they need. I am her frustration my attitude towards her is why she get irritated and angry. Your reaction to your child is the reaction you get from your child. Please atleast try it and see if it works.

Hi my son is 6 yrs old and since he started headstart when he was 3 yrs old. And they were concerned that he wouldnt socialize with other kids and would not stay seated or played he would be all over the place interupting the teacher and so on. He was evaluated for begining of autism as the psychologist thought and came normal in the evaluation. Now last yr he was in kindergarten and he would not or could not concentrate, would yell at the teacher and tell her what he was going to do. It came to the point he kicked her and broke her computer. Things kept on escalating. Now to keep this short hes in 1st grade and i took him to get evaluated with a psychologist in the dept of aps for mental health for kids and he was dx adhd with agressive controling to authority. After the evaluation and speaking with therapist for some blood test they wanted to medicate him and i was against it. Him being so young and just didnt agree with it. I found in a natural vitamin store a natural med that is called added attention, at first i noticed he was actually doing hes assignments at school and being more attentive in class. But recently i notice that after 4 months hes at it again. I just want to say that this video help me understand a bit more that is not a solution of the bat. But help parents understand is not theyre fault. And is a condition thats need to be treated and believe me is very stressful not to be able to comprehend it, Thank you.

A question for you all. I am a father of three children, two girls born in February 1974 and September 1978, and a son born in May 1980. I brought them up with my wife to be polite, respectful, well behaved, well mannered, and considerate of other people and to be honest. They haven't brought the police to my door. I am the eldest of five children. I was born on the final day of March 1949. We were brought up the same relatively speaking. Perhaps my kids have brought their kids up less strictly that I did with them. Or I was. But you have to look why my kids haven't behaved in the manner that is classed as ADHD or ODD. Neither have I or my siblings. In fact I have never seen kids with strict or disciplinarian parents who have displayed ADHD or ODD behavior. Or parents who have just been there for their kids Why?
@jcwebb264
@jcwebb264 5 лет назад
Because ADHD is largely genetic. If you don't have it and your partner doesn't have it, it's unlikely that your kids would have it. It's unlikely that you would be associated with people who do have it - ADHDers can't maintain friendships like neurotypical people can. And adults with adhd have either been diagnosed or developed coping mechanisms. And parents who do have undiagnosed adhd will likely fall into your definition of "poor parents" because they have focus and impulse difficulties that make parenting more difficult and unpredictable. Trust me, I JUST got diagnosed at 32 and parenting was a big factor in going for testing.

Russell Barkley claims his twin brother died in a car crash due to having ADHD and drink driving. Barkley claims his brother had a habit of drink driving. As sad as his brothers death was, the facts are statistically if you drink drive you are more likely to die in a car crash! He’d done it before, and got away with it. When he died, Ron Barkley ran out of luck. Shit happens. Barkley contradicts himself. He and many others have said “ADHD” is highly heritable. Besides Barkley has spoke of a sparkling personality and “ADHD”. Perhaps Ron had a sparkling personality. Reading about him he must have. If not. he must have inherited it from his parents. Barkley’s mom was 94 when she died in April 2008. His dad dad was 83 in June 1999. Right. He keeps saying that people with ADHD die in car crashes, die prematurely due to accidents, have teenage pregnancies. Ron was 23 when he married. How many kids did he have?

How do you explain when you have a group of kids and two of them have a ADHD. ONE is scattered minded, but respectful. The other child is disrespectful to other kids and adults and the mother always justifies with ADHD 😠. How do you explain that? Behavior therapy? Obviously the parent is not guilty of the kid having ADHD, but they should be held accountable for not educating or finding the therapies there kids need. They should be advocates but they won't be able to advocate for them forever or justify the child. I'm just tired of hearing about it and the irresponsible parents, but ask them about twitter, facebook, snapchat and they know it all. What about my child he doesn't have ADHD, but he has deal with it? I feel like they treat this ADHD as a disability and it's not. I know what a disability is. And honestly they are disabling and labeling a child and discriminating him, by having him be treated differently.

While over diagnosed and too often medicated, this is a legitimate condition. The child takes in too much environmental information and tends to relieve the overwhelming stimuli by movement (ADHD) or excessive lack of task completion "just sits there"(ADD). Ideas that have helped in my classroom are personal headphones to dampen auditory input, breaking up task into smaller portions (still do entire assignment), less distraction on classroom walls(visual input). We also use task reminders and timers with achievable goals, small rewards.

Your poor child... He doesn't have the same ability to regulate emotions, mood, internalize consequences or control impulses like that of a normal person. He is already not working with a full toolbox and the negativity, shame, judgement, and disappointment you're conveying to him will only exacerbate his symptoms. Try having some empathy. I and my 5 year old daughter both have ADHD. I find when I spend more time with her, remove the shame/judgement around her defecits, and praise her strengths and progress, her symptoms are greatly alleviated and my life is easier as a result. I can enjoy my relationship with her now since viewing her differently and a new approach. You create a self fulfilling prophecy when you talk about your child the way you do. Let him know he has other options. Let him know you love him even when he is making bad choices. Let him know you are there to help. Take him to a doctor. If you don't, you are dooming him to be the person you described and nothing else.

Siobhán Murphy I’m sorry but first of all, ITS A FUCKING KID! You can’t blame the kid. Second of all, it’s a mental disorder and the symptoms are behavioural, their brains work different. It is NOT their fault. They don’t have the same self control as someone without ADHD would have. Please help your kid, and help yourself to understand ADHD more as well.
