Adidas Adios Pro 3 - An outstanding race shoe nearly ruined by a dreadful upper

This was a video that I didn't intend to make, especially given the Adidas Adios Pro 4 will be launching soon. This is actually my second pair of Adidas Adios Pro 3s. I originally bought a pair around the launch in 2022, put a bit over 72km (45miles) into them and absolutely hated them, mostly due to the upper but also the feel of Lightstrike Pro. So they went straight into the donation bin.
However, I have been running in the Adidas Takumi Sen 9 for about 5 months now, which made me appreciate Lightstrike Pro finally. Additionally, during my testing of the Nike Vaporfly 3 I got curious to run in this shoe again, and I couldn't resist the "Non-dyed" colorway. I put another 56km (35miles) into the pair featured in this video and really grew to appreciate Lightstrike Pro and what Adidas is doing with their racing line in 2023. Also, the Adios Pro 3 informed many of my opinions on the Nike Vaporfly 3.
Together, both pairs of of Adios Pro 3s I've run in total: 130.20km (80.9miles)
Which I think qualifies for a 50 mile review.

More people need to know this and talk about this!! The eyelet and upper issue need to be shouted from the rooftop. So many reviewers missed this point, good on you for calling this out!!

I mean… there is alot of discussion on it and it’s been out there for two years now. It is also one of those things that if you are lucky to have the right shaped foot you’ll never experience it… but for the rest of us it’s a bummer because the midsole/outsole of this shoe is outstanding.

Thank you so much for this video! The inside provided again is priceless, since it has cleared up so many issues that I had with this shoe. This is really the shoe I love and hate the most at the same time. No other midsole feels that good to me (zoomx is a bit too soft and asics for example a bit too hard for my taste), but the lockdown in this shoe is just terrible. I had runs, where i literally relaced the shoe ten times in order to find the right balance between not hurting because of the lacing but still having a good enough lockdown. If there was a shoe with the (for me) perfect lockdown of the asics sky + and the feel/midsole of adios pro 3, I would never want to run in another shoe again (apart from the invincible for easy running) ! Again, thank you very much for the video, appreciate it! The attention to detail is exceptional!

I feel like those complaining about the upper are tightening the laces way too tight. I did the same thing at first and had the same issues. I now leave the laces a little looser and it works great. I also run with the heel collar up which eliminated any issues in the heel.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning Год назад
That helps slightly… but still the midfoot lock is in the forefoot… which is a complete mess. I even went and found the socks Adidas recommends to work with this shoe. No lock. The mid foot lock is very poorly positioned so it doesn’t matter how tight or loose you make the shoe… the fit is still wonky.

I’ve actually been running in these again, pain free. Finding the right sock makes a world of difference. One that cushions enough… but more importantly grips the inside of the shoe so your foot doesn’t move at all. I’ll have an update video on it in May.

For me still a great shoe as 6’1 muscular 200 lb runner this midsole works so well for me . I got it for 125 bucks so I am totally ok with a few issues. Finally pulled the trigger on the Adios Pro 3 and I have to say, I'm liking it a lot, it's a shoe I'm excited to pick up for any run! I was wary of all the issues you pointed out with the upper, but (so far), while some are noticeable (that scratchy heel pad), none of them have been a problem for me, perhaps because I'm not really using them for anything close to marathon pace (and time). In fact, I even went down half a size from my normal US 10.5 and they fit quite well. What surprised me, after using them for a variety of runs (base, tempo, threshold), is how good they feel in all of them (they feel awesome when picking up the pace!), even doing a slower base run I feel it takes less effort and it's easier to maintain my pace compared to, say, my Triumph 20s. I suspect the firmer midsole is the reason why. I may have to consider getting myself a daily trainer with a firmer midsole in the future.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 6 месяцев назад
The midsole on the AP3 is absolutely outstanding. If the upper isn’t giving you problems then you are good to go. Sounds like a great shoe for you! The firmer foam with higher resiliency combined with the curve of the carbon rods really works well to both roll you forward and give you some pop off the toe. Especially so if this is your first carbon plated/riddled shoe…. The feeling will be VERY distinct. Another good thing about Lightstrike Pro is it’s very durable and you don’t need to worry about “using it up”… it just gets better and better the more you run in it. The outsole on the AP3 is outstanding as well. In my mind you have the best mix between the AP3 and the Triumph 20s. A stiff and propulsive shoe and a more flexible shoe. Your feet and legs will get the best of both worlds. If you want to add a stiffer trainer the Adidas SL is a good basic daily trainer than is on the firmer side (the SL 2 should be coming out soon though). The Adidas Boston 12 is the stiff faster training counter part to the AP3. Enjoy them though. 🤙🏻

I love this shoe for race day. I have my PR in these shoes, but I know what you mean by the upper. I have experienced pain on the top of my foot after a few miles. Maybe it's because I tighten the laces too tight, but with the stack height that this shoe has, you need to tighten it to get a good lockdown fit.

I have to disagree on the mid foot lockdown, as the Pro 3's seem perfect for me. I did encounter the heal rub from the stitching (only in the left shoe), but a change of socks has cured that. Have the same problem, the Pro 2 was fine for me personally ran a Marathon in it pain free and those bumps up front are pretty high inside the shoe. Makes it unusable for me as a marathon show, I have wider feet but that’s why I loved the previous upper, cut my small toes in trying it out. Many reviews say the upper needs work but it’s those first 2 bonded and stitched eyelets that really are a horrible design. Glad you made a video about it!

The staining only happened once. The good thing is the upper material is basically plastic, so it doesn't stain much. Since I recorded this video I have found socks that protect my feet and allow problem free running in this shoe. The upper is still a poor design but at least I found a solve.

@@SagasuRunning Thanks for sharing the solutions, I've tried the kt tapes taping through the top of all joints of the foot, and loosen up the first three holes tightness, but only tighten up around the mid foot area, it works averagely and reasonably good, for my mid-long run around 15km. Very late reply, but this is the frst video I have seen covering this. I can completly agree to all points. I have a very weird size where the 43 1/3 is actually too long, but gives me better hold in the midfood, so if i ordered one smaller, I get pressure points everywhere, but with the 43 1/2 I'm forced to run with CEP achilles support socks, then this shoe works perfectly, otherwise it is unrunable for me. I still made this as my long distance easy pace trainer, because of the upper. Meanwhile the takumi sen 9 - which has the same problem with the lenght - I don't have any problems at all.

I’m glad I’m not alone, tho the I did go TTS with my pair. The Takumi Sen 9 is much narrower, but has a much cleaner, simpler and better considered upper so not surprised it works better. The AP3 upper really is an unfortunate design choice all-around.

It’s 100% not the best upper, but if you mess about with the lacing a bit it can really improve the lockdown. Loosening up the laces really helped me, but yeah, it’s not the best. Really hope they make a strung version in the future. Can’t groan about the midsole though, it’s amazing.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning Год назад
Sure, you can adjust the lacing to get some type of fit that is moderately acceptable and only mildly damages your foot. However, you shouldn’t have to worry about that and it doesn’t address the overall poor design choices on the upper. The midsole and outsole though… are near perfection for LSP. That makes the horrible upper even more insulating.

Agree about the toe box area. My toe box material is completely puckered up. The tongue is too thin and annoying when getting you feet in. But the worst part is the eyelet chain/mid-foot on the medial side really digs in. I've tried skipping eyelets and laces and still get a dull pain after 5/7km. Got this a couple of weeks ago and I've got bruising slightly on both big toes. Can't quite work out why, not sure if foot is slipping slightly and pushing against the end of the shoe. I bet it has something to do with the upper material, and that has absolutely no give as well. Your foot is likely moving slightly in the shoe, due to the terrible lockdown. Maybe, but. If the pressure from the base of the eyelet chain is due to how tight the shoes is there it could help. However, the upper is fairly generous on the AP3 so going up a half size will likely mean the shoe is now too large and you get foot movement in the upper which will make everything worst. Especially lace bite. The boot solution is to find a mid weight sock that grips the upper material. That is what I’ve done.

I uses band-aids (plasters) on the big toe knuckle and a midnight sock… it’s the only solution I’ve found for me. There are alot of things only on how to cut away the two lower eyelets and their anchors but then the lockdown would be even worst… The heel counter and lockdown overall is also an issue for many (not me thankfully). @cameronthaijohnson
@cameronthaijohnson Год назад
Agreed. The midsole is great. The upper is really bad. I like a snug fit and prefer an 8.5 fit-wise in these to my regular 9, but I absolutely cannot size down to get the more secure fit because of how much pain the lace loops underneath the upper rubbing on the big toe knuckle causes. The heel counter also blistered pretty bad because of how rough it is. Also just the roughness of the material in the toebox folding and rubbing on the top of the forefoot was uncomfortable. The worst part is that the lace loop on top of the big toe knuckle is so bad that it still bothers my foot even with the kinda sloppy fit in my regular 9, so the lockdown is bad and loose and then it still rubs. The upper really is terrible. I agree that the Takumi Sen 9 upper is good though and it fits way better than the 8. It feels like a big improvement from the 8. Here's hoping to a Strung upper on the next Adios Pro that fixes it.

The rods are so flimsy. if the rod acts similarly as the Nike’s carbon plate, I want to question what are these carbon insert’s true function here. May be the energy return is generated from the foam. rod/plate could be more as a stability for the soft unstable super foam
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 9 месяцев назад
Rods/plates are adding stability. In Adidas’s case though, since LSP foam is so dense/firm, they more guide the foot on initial strike and toe off giving a hint of stability for both.

Assuming this means 5-10k races. If so, it’s fine, but there are better choices. The Takumi Sen is Adidas’s short rracer. Also a Vaporfly or Evo 1 will be faster than the AP3. Any racing shorter than the above… this shoe would definitely not be my first choice.

I didnt have any issues with the upper. Maybe becouse of my foot shape or maybe becouse of my socks. I'm using cheapet decathlon kiprun socks for almost everything. Very thin, synthetic, and work pretty well with adios pro3 as well. No blister, no hot poins, no lace pressure issues what so ever. By the way, I ❤ pro 3. Great great long run/race shoe.

I was using very thin socks at the time I recorded this. Since I’ve moved to slightly thicker socks and it has made a huge difference. I have a high arch ans high volume foot… so Adizero uppers take some work for my foot to adapt. That still doesn’t excuse the horrendous design choices made on this upper.

I just got mine and im returning them right away, I thought I could work my way around the upper like it seems others have. I was wrong, it’s so bad. The overlay in the toebox dips right into my big toe, I’ve tried everything in terms of lacing it differently and had no difference. I feel like anytime I have to do that much to try and fix a shoe it’s a no go. I’m amazed the athletes who would’ve tested this said nothing.

The only runners I have seen that don't have top of the foot issues are those with lower arches and a lower volume foot. Everyone else will have an issue somewhere, some worst than others. Ive run 2 marathons (on the Adios Pro 3) and am going on my second pair of Adios Pro 3s and have to say I haven’t had any of the issues mentioned here. I haven’t had any blisters or hot spots around the toe box or heel area. Discussing with other runners i think wider feet are more prone to such issues, while slimmer feet might not have as many. After listening to a couple of reviewers about the laces i swapped the laces with a pair of mizuno laces and did get some pain in the upper part of my foot, so switched back to the original laces. I do feel the laces are somewhat thinner compared to others, but they seem to work fine with my foot shape, as again i haven’t had the qualms many have had with this shoe. I have had issues having to retighten the laces only very occasionally if I don’t make sure the very slim tongue is properly centered, although on the second pair i bought (red) the tongue feels a bit firmer. Although that might be due to less use on the shoe. That being said i think it’s important for viewers to know that as a user of these shoes I’ve run over 900 km in 2 pairs of Adios Pro 3s and haven’t had any of the BIG problems and think its an excellent shoe if your foot shape and/or stride allow you to not have those problems. Its unfortunate you had such a hard time with the upper, while ive had no problems whatsoever. I write note this because if i had seen this review before buying my first pair I wouldn't have bought it and would have really missed out on a GREAT shoe. BTW i also have the takumi zen and agree the fit is great on that shoe also.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning Год назад
I think I agree with you on narrow feet having less issues with the AP3 upper. I rarely have upper issues with shoes, my foot is fairly “normal” (not wide or narrow)… but this shoe really got me. I have a friend who is coach and has access to elite level runners. He also commented to me that many Adidas elites have had problems with blistering and rubbing in the AP3, most just dealing with it due either having to run in the shoe due to contracts or because the shoe, overall is very good. The upper on the Adios 8 is a sign of things to come for the AP4 I hope. Because they midsole on the AP3 is outstanding!

I have the Pro 3 plus 2E wide feet and do not recognize the critique of the upper at all. But it is a very narrow shoe especially across the arch of the foot (as are all the Adizero shoes), so the inside of my arches get sore towards the end of a race. But the same goes for all other brands of racing shoes. That being said, I much prefer the feel of my Adios Pro 1 to the Pro 3.

I don’t think getting only 100 miles out of a top end race shoe is a problem. It’s a race shoe, not a trainer. That being said I’ve seen other reviewers, they are heel strikers, with hundreds of miles on the AP3. Lightstrike Pro and Continental rubber are about as durable as it gets. Though yes, extreme wear will change the way the shoe runs and stress different part of the body. Sorry to hear yours are doing that.

Bought this shoe 7 months ago, only racked up 90km in them since - there is literally nothing about it I like. Super unstable, terrible upper and laces, and everywhere from the knee downwards hurts within a couple of km. Despicable. I picked a pair of clapped out Kayanos to run my first HM over these. They're the only shoes I've ever worn that made me feel like my feet were different sizes. I don't understand how anybody can run in these. They even seem to get dirty faster than other shoes. They aren't even fast - I've run a 10k 45 seconds faster in a pair of Nimbus 25s. Picture yourself running on polystyrene blocks with a cheap, rough, stiff and hard sack glued on top of it. That would be an upgrade over this shoe.

What gets me (non "runner) are the mesh uppers on "race shoes". while I understand the thinking....for max breathability....i think it makes these shoes look and probably feel cheap. Couldn't be too comfortable...a "plasticy see-through mesh"material. I mean if you can find knit uppers that are very breathable in trainers...why not put them on "race shoes"?? Companies culd design a "race shoe" with a "beathable upper" and just put larger holes in the knit... aroudnd th toe area with an rear- "vent"....as some one has done laready...forget who that was with which shoe... intake from the front exhuast out the heel...heh...
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning Год назад
(As a runner) I will say Adidas Celemesh used on this shoe is a fantastic material for a high end race shoe. The upper issue here have to do with the design and engineering, not materials. This material is ultra light weight and allows for more midsole or outsole, stuff needed for a marathon shoe. Also race shoes are very different than trainers in what the expectation is for for. There is something called a “race fit” that most race shoes have, especially Adidas. This means a very secure and conforming (to the foot) upper that has no flex and locks the foot to the shoe. While this shoe isn’t the classic race fit it still fits like a race shoe. Additionally these ultra light weight mesh materials shed water and moisture quickly, not adding weight to the shoe. Form follows function here and we are actually in an eta of running shoes where performance beats cosmetics, especially with race shoes.
