I like your product-design approach for these reviews, as you leave most of the price tag component out. Don't get me wrong, prices matter and I don't have an unlimited budget for shoes, as neither do most people, specially in Brazil, where imported products are tagged with a 50-100% premium upon release, perhaps because of importing taxes and currency issues, or because the big corporations know they'll sell anyhow. However, most of the other reviews on this shoe (and other models, too) focus on cost-benefit, and sometimes this approach "clouds" viewer's glance into design and usage (and I'm including myself). Interestingly, in other contexts, these prices could be totally rearranged, perhaps rearranging consumer bias towards this or that brand/model as well. Here's a list of daily trainers as they are priced in Brazil at this point, converted to USD: 1. Adidas Supernova Rise - 100 USD (w/ a discount) 2. Nike Vomero 17 - 120 USD (w/ a discount) 3. Adidas SL2 - 145 USD (full price) 4. Puma VN 3 - 160 USD (full price) 5. Nike Pegasus 41 - 180 USD (full price) 6. NB Rebel V4 - 180 USD (full price). As for the SL2, got my pair this morning in the "wannabe-volt" colorway, ahah! Let's see how it does on the road. Keep up the good work, Chris, and happy Sunday for everyone out there.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
This is why I don't often talk about price. I did a video on this a while back actually (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pY2NHyImMns.html). My audience is global and pricing, sales, specials...are all over the place globally. The price I pay, or the price I think is right for the shoe, is irrelevant. I only talk about pricing (in USD) when it's a VERY relevant "feature" of the shoe (like the with Puma Velocity Nitro 3)...even them I'll always put a condition on it for local markets. The "volt" SL2 colorway is my second favorite one. We also don't have it here in Taiwan...

The video the people have been waiting for. I still think it is an absolute crime that Adidas isn't giving the SL2 the promotion that it deserves, the mainline page hasn't mentioned it at all. This makes me want to pick up the TS10 though, I held off for a while but if it's basically a slimmed down, racing version of the SL2 then it's got me interest more than it did, especially now that the Metaspeed hasn't worked out well for me since I was using that for faster stuff due to the weight. Fingers crossed the Pro 4 has a release before Chicago
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
I'm really shocked Adidas has not promoted this shoe, at all. Absolutely nothing anywhere. No global press release, no social media promotion, not even any influencer promotion. Interestingly, the shoe was promoted in Japan but Adidas Japan. They issued a press release and have been doing some social media promotion of it featuring popular Japanese pro Adidas runners. Even Adidas Japan Adidas pros have been promoting the shoe on their social media. Which is odd because Adidas Japan usually follows what the HQ in Herzo does. However, it just all supported my mindset that the SL2 is (design-wise) related to the old Takumi Ren...

Your review is the first I’ve seen where the connection was made to the SL2 being the training partner to the Takumi Sen. Just had my first run in them. Only five miles but wow! I had an easy day on the schedule and I was afraid these would make me want to run faster but I restrained myself and these responded extremely well to easy pace. Can’t wait to throw some tempo at them. I recently got the SNR and I’ve got about 50 miles on them and they’ve been excellent too. After running in the SL2, it’s going to be hard to want to run in anything else though, at least for a couple of weeks.

Night and day differences between the SL and SL2… in my mind it all comes down the flexibility of the Lightstrike foam. The SL2 foam is Nair so much better in that way. I actually don’t find the SL2 too soft…
@olli-perttikojo4424
@olli-perttikojo4424 11 дней назад
I love that the lateral heel bias is made here by lack of medial heel bewel. I applied powertools today and created that medial heel bewel. That forced supination on heel landing made my lower back hurt. Fixed it 😮 so this shoe is my detox for overly soft shoes. To me, the bounce is super shoe level. But my foot is the only plate. Good point that medial forefoot collapse. Is ok.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
Interesting solution. One thing I didn't mention in the review is that this shoe is a good transition shoe for those wanting to ween themselves off of super hight stack shoes. It's a lower mid stack shoe that runs like ti has more foam in it. A great tool to help people transition away from the high stack shoes full time.
@TimGrose
@TimGrose 11 дней назад
Good insight as ever especially the Foot Strike Differences section as strikes an accord about midfoot striking and rolling in a bit. I like this shoe but I think I will need to park it until sort out some issues. My physio thinks I need more arch support and I felt the SL2 basically has none so hence some rolling in! In recent weeks some ankle and Achilles issues which had been troubling me for a while got a lot worse - not due to this shoe (think more general overuse TBH) but I when I tried the SL2 those issues certainly did not go away and actually, in hindsight, made things worse. But hey got to get some miles in a shoe to "review" it. As a result been reaching for the Peg 41s instead and indeed now am trying them with insoles with more arch support. Maybe they might help in the SL2 but then the "SL" would be lost and would need to pull out the glued insoles. So when I hear things like the SL2 is a lot better than the Peg 41s etc etc well yes it is if you want a lightweight "daily" trainer shoe that is fun and snappy but it must suit your gait.
@ucatani
@ucatani 11 дней назад
I found the same, here. I got my pair this morning and haven't run in it, but just by looking at them and trying them on, it's clear that the midsole design looks like a flat 9mm drop angle on both sides. Also, looking at the bevel from behind, I can see a clear supination angle in the midsole, pointing outwards, which is even more accentuated by the extra, upper section of Lighstrike foam encasing the Lightstrike pro section. In fact, I've detected that on the whole Boston and Adizero line, and this has been keeping me from trying them. This time I bought the SL2 to give it a try, but the SL2 is almost certainly not going to work for me. Speaking from an exclusively gait/physio/ride point of view, and leaving aside the whole Adidas x Nike x that or this brand cult behavior aside, I think I've just become so accostumed to that "shark" Pegasus/Vomero shape, that I'll have to stick to that type of arc, for the benefit of my running form.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
Oh man, if you need more arch support...that may limit your use of Adidas shoes in the future as the Adizeo series literally has none often, even those you can put an orthotic in (which is rare). Nike, however, is a good option for you. I noticed an aggressive arch in the Peg41 when i first put them on (which mellowed out now)...but with an orthitic in them they should work well. Even the VF2/3 and AF3 should work for you as they also have aggressive arch support... I'll be talking about all of this in my SL2 vs Peg41 video mid week! You need to heel up so you can get back out there running... we have alot to discuss!

I tested this shoe and agree I could feel where the lightstrike in this shoe ends at the toe. I found the Supernova Prima to give me that extra cushion in the toe I wanted but am loving using the Sl2 and Supernova Prima as my primary daily training shoes and will slot in the Superblast 2. Looks like I found my next dedicated treadmill shoe, once I retire my 1st pair of Novablast V3, and transition the 2nd pair of NB V3 to outside. Hopefully Adidas continues to utilize the design of the inner heel on the entire Adizero line. Which will allow a wider audience to utilize their shoes. Point of reference, my last adizero shoe I loved was the Adios 6, due to the inner heel.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
Hmmm, the medial heel is an issue though. It allows the door to cave inward for this with even mild pronation. The same issue as in the Takumi Sen. For the heel you are talking about the upper given the heel lift issue you’ve mentioned before? If not the heel upper…What works about it for you? I know Adidas heel bevels can be overly aggressive for some.
@timtrenholm3698
@timtrenholm3698 10 дней назад
@@SagasuRunning Takumi Sen8 works lovely for me, it seems the heel cup design limits heel lift since the cup is so flexible. Unlike the Boston 12, which was a nightmare for heel lift. Having a Nike style inner heel padding strip seems to be the solution to my heel lift issues. Having the heel cup be flexible is just an added bonus. Think TS8 heel padding and the Puma DN Elite V1, both with inner padding strips which should be problematic, but both are very flexible heel cups which allow the lacing lockdown to keep the heel in place, is my theory. While I consider myself a mild pronator, I've been using a standing desk for work for nearly a year and a half now, which built up natural lower leg strength. To the point that I am now able to integrate 1k downhill loops at marathon effort in anticipation of my Boston '25 bib. (BQ minus 8:36min).

Great video, as always. I have a mild fit concern about these, as the Boston 12 doesn’t work for me, whereas the Supernova Rise, Adios 8 and Adios Pro 3 work well. That said, competition is the ultimate delay for me. The Rise is just so comfortable and easy to wear for so many things and I just received the S1 after watching your video (no runs yet)… then add the coming Superblast 2 and the Adios 9 and there’s just so much going on. This doesn’t account for shoes outside of the Adidas family that I have and still use like the Endorphin Speed and first iteration of the Superblast. A very exciting shoe for the brand, but probably something I’ll end up passing on.

@@SagasuRunning Oh before this video came out, I was already waiting for that comparison. I’m confident they’re quite different shoes and could be complimentary, with the Rise for easy and long and the SL for moderate or easy with pickups and ability to stretch into tempo work. Spot on review once again! A fairly interesting point that I saw another reviewer said is that if you look at the insoles of all Adizero shoes, the Pro3, takumi sen 10, and now SL2 are all perforated while the Boston and Adios 8 both have non-perforated ones. It's a somewhat strange design choice however if you think of the separation as intentional, it really feels like the former 3 is designed to complete a "premium" rotation, while the latter 2 are sort of another line of "budget rotation", where Boston 12 covers daily easy, tempo, and longer races with Adios 8 handling threshold, interval (basically faster) and shorter races. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 9 дней назад
It's more different generations. The B12 and A8 are both last generation now. The TS and AP have always had non removable insoles as they are race shoes. What I find interesting is just how performance oriented they went with the SL2 and followed suit of the race models. I fully expect the Adios 9 to have a non-removable insole. Though with a Boston 13, if we even see one, I'm not sure. it would make sense for Adidas to push the Adizero range to all non-removable insoles as it gives a better feel but will limit usability for some runners who need orthotics.

This analysis is SUPERB. Thanks a lot! I loved the intro about SL20 and it's origin SL72, and how product-wise it stripped down to Duramo line... In my heart, since I love my old SL20, I feel more like a fork between Duramo and SL, and I guess the dna of SL20 rhat relates to the SL2 is the creative jump. I'll definitely have one, just not sure if I wait more colors... anyway, I'm sick recovering and having SL2 but not sample running it would be just impossible; better wait a little! So.. is it a good understanding as trainers and racing partners: - SL2 - Takumi Sen - Boston 12 - Adios Pro 3 and Evo (?) I look forward to your review between Supernova Rise and SL2. SN Rise is just too soft to me, but it will be fun having your insights. To me, it could work as a walking shoe (yes, walking is part of my recreational runner training). Cheers! ❤🇧🇷👏👏👏
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
The SL20 was a fun shoe way back when. There will be A TON of colorways for the SL2...you will definitely have some options to pick from. The Adidas rotations I see now are this (I'll eventually do a video on this once we see the rest of the Adizero linup) SNR = Cushioned trainer/long slow runs SL2 = Daily all rounder TS10 = workouts and 5/10k racing, maybe half marathon B12 = longer tempo/threshold running (especially if your race in the Evo 1, you need a durable training option) AP3 = half/full racing and training So you can combine them in many ways depending on what you need. My point on the B12 was more that because it was the default Adizero trainer in 2023, due the the SL not being quite good enough, people used it for much more types of running than it was really intended or good for. They ould be better served doing that in the SL2 now and reserving the B12 as a true tempo trainer.

Similar, but better. The upper is less padded and smoother on the foot. One the midsole starts to break in, around 30k for me it seems, the whole shoe softens up and molds to you foot. Something that the SL1 never did as LS foam always remained fairly rigid.

Ah, so that's where the Duramo SL comes from. Likewise, I had no idea about the Takumi Ren, thanks! The fit with Adidas' shoes has been strange for me. I'm a US 10.5 with Nike Pegasus (same with Puma's VN3), but with the AP3 I went half a size down, then when I tried the SNR I was between 11 and 11.5, and when I tried the SL2 I was 11. Going from your performance matrix alone, I would've imagined the SL2 to be almost interchangeable with the SNR and not that good of a (non-plated) tempo/interval companion shoe (something like the VN3, though that's not a dedicated tempo trainer). I read that your next comparison is gonna be the SL2 v SNR so I'll definitely be looking forward to that one (and SL2 v VN3 after that too!).

I still see the Sortiemagic RP 6 on shoves here in Taiwan in the flagship Asics stores on occasion. If I see them again I’ll pick up a pair for a retro review. There definitely was a shared design language between the Japanese racing flats, cross brand, back in 2016/17.

Done watching. Excellent history background, I assume you gonna mention SL72 as the ancestor of the SL even though I didn’t see that connection😂 My question, how does this compare to Supernova Rise?
@SagasuRunning

The connection is they is where the “SL” product name originates. Researching this video made me curious about the retro SL72…. I’m a big fan of the Samba for casual use but I may check out the SL ‘72 OG. Stay tuned for my next video… it will be the SL2 vs SNR comparison…. I have quite a bit to say…. It should be up in the next 24-48hrs from this comment.

Nice review! New perspective added compared to other reviews I've seen. So, I suspect that if I have Supernova Rise, Boston 12 and Adios 8, the SL2 doesn't have a place in my rotation, right?

If the B12 or A8 are needing of replacement soon, the SL2 is a prime candidate for that. Keep the SNR as is...

@BernhardPlainer-fq5hv 11 дней назад
Thanks for the great stories. Particularly like the use case tempo chart. Makes it obvious to me that the Adios 8 is kind of unnecessary (I like that shoe a lot) if you have the three others. And even more, it totally makes sense to have a full and plateless A9. With that being said, I personally see adidas to rethink the positioning of the Boston model in the future (if they keep all other models for 2025 and beyond).
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
I agree with you. The A8 was great, but is rather useless at the moment. The SL2 and TS10 eclipse it in all ways right now. So the move from Adidas to make the A9 just LSP (no plate, but it's unclear if it has a midfoot shank) makes more sense now. Having the option between a TS10 and the A9 will be great. I may do a video on the future of the Boston series...it's the ONLY 2024 Adizero shoe we have seen zero leaks on...which makes me thing there may not be one. Also with all the new models and revised legacy models Adidas has done this year there is more overlap in Adidas running than ever before... Let me do some digging on this....but keep your eyes out for a video possibly in late July or early august on this.

“super leicht” is all relative. But they do appear light for a daily trainer which is generally what I’m looking for. A lot of daily trainers suck at size 13. I used to just use the Streak and Streak LT for everything. The relationship that you observed with the TS10 is really interesting. They do look like they share a design language. Actually it looks more like the TS8 if I’m honest because the heel collar and “blinker” in the TS8 and Pro 2 were more like this. I’m still eking out a few speed sessions in my TS8 as we are having epic rain in Abidjan and I am still babying my white TS10. I’ll give it a go especially with the $30 summer discount it is $100 less than another pair of TS Eliot.
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
It IS all relative. SL seems universal language-wise though. I do see TS8 in the SL2, for sure. The "ivory" TS10 upper material is surprisingly resistant to stains and road grime in the wet, I've done quite a bit of wet running in them. The only thing that really affects them is red clay...
@brianreiter5572
@brianreiter5572 10 дней назад
That red clay stain is the problem. West African soils are basically sand mixed with red laterite clay. I’m being a bit twee about it. It just so happens that “super” from Latin is universal in European language. Those Romans got around and were influential. The Latin cognates for levius in Romance languages and the old German līht in Germanic languages both start with L. SL is universal European shorthand. Italian: super leggero Spanish: super ligero French: super léger German: super leicht Dutch: super licht Danish: super let
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
Here in Taiwan there is a lot of iron in the soil, at least up here in Taipei that is mixed with various limestone, sand and volcanic ash that makes a cake that sticks to every shoe outside and stains white uppers and many midsoles. Generally not an issue for road running here…. But trail running definitely. Interesting etymology of the term…. Fascinating. 👏🏻

The Adizero SL left my forefoot sore almost after every time I ran on then. But I still kept running for a total of 250km before donating my pair. I overpronate, but the shoes were stable enough for me. I just did not like that pocket idea for the LiteStrike Pro that was probably not lying correctly under my forefoot and that is why I was extremely sore in the first 5 runs before my feet started to get used to it. Anyways, super close to the ground Adizero Adios 3,4,5 never left my feet sore ... I will give these SL2 a try ! Especially since Adidas is no longer bringing the "normal " Adios to my country. Only selected markets got tge Adios 8 and will get Adios 9 along side tge Adizero SL2.

If you are a mid foot or heel striker and pronate...but careful in these (as I said in the video) otherwise they are much more cushioned than the SL. Way less harsh. It does sound like the upcoming Adios 9 might be your shoe. Hopefully they finally come to your country (Brazil right?).

I have all 3 of those shoes, except takumi Sen 8 instead of 10 and largely agree, except Boston 12 is better for longer efforts. Have used all in 5k parkrun and ts8 got my PB. SL 2 did ok last week and not bad for faster efforts. However I would size up half a size in the SL 2 over other adizero. I'm 11 US in the Prime X strung 1, Boston 12 and takumi Sen 8 and went 11 in the SL 2 and could do with 11.5US. Definitely recommend half size up.

Great insights! Thank You! I am having lateral heel pain around achilles insertion point in Supernova Rise. I don't know why Adidas is making the heel base uneven. Why encourage the foot ro roll in a certain way, it does not make sense to me. I still went ahead and ordered SL2 and the foam feel great, hope I can keep the heel pain at bay by rotating among different shoes. I love what Adidas have been doing with their foams, lightstrike pro is my favorite foam out of all modern foams that I have tried so far but I wish they stop doing these crazy 'innovations' on the geometry of the outsole. I wish there was a Hoka clifton with Lightstrike Pro foam :D
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
The SNR definitely has an extreme lateral heel bevel, much more extreme than the SL2. Though they both have it, moslty due to Adidas engineering trying to capture and channel the lateral side of the heel to move the foot forward into the midfoot. It works beautifully for me when I heel strike, but that is (no longer) my normal foot strike. Ugh, a Hoka Clifton with LSP makes me want to cry just thinking about...🤣
@WiseGuyFTW
@WiseGuyFTW 10 дней назад
@@SagasuRunning Haha! I love the construction of the Hoka shoes, I have run many ultra distances in those shoes and I have never had any overuse injuries or strain in Hokas. Clifton has been my go to shoe because I often run on roads and light trails and clifton has good enough traction for both. What I hate about clifton is the foam and how it sinks and have no energy return, my legs are beaten up for a day after running in Clifton and I think it is becasue of the EVA. Lightstrike pro for me has been a perfect balance of comfort and energy return, it feels amazing and fun to run in SL2. So that is why I would love hoka to move away from their boring EVA to a more modern foam like the lighstrike pro.

bro not pregnant but he delivered everytime! very interesting comparison to TS and looking at it now makes more sense. Questions : 1.I haven't buy the SL2 yet, waiting for nicer colorway, but I went to the store and tried it, infact the LS here is much softer than LS2.0 in Boston12 right of, my question is, I am now liking my Boston12 as more miles gets into them, the foam really fun to run in and its gets softer and fun I would say, the question is , in term of foam softness, Do you see SL2 will even be more soft and softer to the point it become mushy when you put your miles into them? 2.Next is that, since you said that B12 is become the "kinda you dont need" given SL2 exist, how this you anticipate on Adidas line up in future? 3.SL2 is definitely more padded, how does it feels running on hot days? Any hotspots and how you clean them, I bet it might take a while to dry. 4.In term of product design and marketing ,why hasn't this shoe been marketed as much as I would like to see in Adizero line up, maybe not in my country, but I often see other ahoes been pushed by Adidas recently, not sure the reason but maybe you have some interesting idea ? 5.Yes this not the B12, how does the LSPRO insert different from LSPRO stacked in B12? Sometimes I felt like companies now are so in bed with the ideas of dual foam setup but don't really explain to us their decision or logic of it? They be like, whats our idea for next shoes, "dual foam" YES, then they just think of way of making it "different" than the rest and then market it as "this is the way". Just wanna know the logic of this shoe. 6. Last but not least, Long Runs, do you see this shoe able to help witb long progressive run lets say 20kplus? Or perhaps thats why the Boston still relevant. Sorry asking too much as I been waiting this and still has so much to ask! 😅 Best shoe talk so far!
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
1). I'm not sure...need more time into them to see. LS/LS2 is usually pretty stable. The softness I always felt in the B12 was the LSP breaking in, not from the LS2 changing much. 2). The Boston still has a spot as a tempo trainer, especially over longer runs than the Takumi Sen is intended for (i.e. marathon training). My point was more that what people were using it for last year, as a "super trainer" and easy running is no longer needed. They will be better off doing most of that running in the SL2 and reserving the B12 for tempo/threshold running, especially if they don't have/like the TS10. 3). I've noticed no hot spots or over-heating and my last two runs were in 32c and 34c temps with high humidity. All shoes will be hot and fill with sweat in these temps, these are no different but also nothing out of the ordinary. 4). I have no idea why Adidas global isn't promoting this shoe. There has been ZERO from the Herzo HQ on this one in anyway. It is an olympic year, which makes thigns confused usually...but still. Only Adidas Japan is promoting this shoe in Japan. 5). The LSP configuration in the B12 (and A8) is better IMO. It gives you the Adizero toe off feeling and puts more LSP under your foot. However, for a entry level/all around trainer the configuration of the SL2 makes sense and works for what they shoe is intended for...and the midsole update in the SL2 is surprisingly energetic. 6). It can do a 20k run...but a true long run, like over 32k....I'd use the Supernova Rise or my race shoe (Adios pro 3) for that but shorter runs under 20k, this shoe is ideal. 🤙🏻

Takeaway from this video is: SL2 trainer to Takumi Sen 10 ( from 5K races up to a half marathon) The Boston 12 may still be a sensible option for a full marathon training block as a trainer for the Adios Pro 3? How is the fit lengthwise? On Boston 12 and Adios Pro 3 I am a size 9.5US but on Takumi Sen I am a size 10US? I am not allowed to run for six weeks as my physio advised. Also I am going by a wrist based HR monitor (Apple Watch Ultra) which isn’t the most accurate but good enough and consistent for what I need it for. LOE is what I run by more in the summer, with HR as a secondary data point. If it feels too hard I back off immediately as I know the Taipei summer heat and humidity will smack me down fast. Yes, much more versatile. The NB4 is great but it's only really useful for easy running and maybe some tempo running at times. Other than that it's too much shoe and rocker for workouts and anything all out. Keep in mind the SL2 doesn't have a removable insole and is much more performance oriented. The comparison to the NB4 is more apples to oranges.

need to size up with this one, it's so narrow compared to the fit of adios pro 3
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 8 дней назад
I don’t find it narrow at all…. But compared to the AP3 the forefoot is narrower. But the AP3 is fairly wide and generous forefoot fit, especially for a super shoe.

@@SagasuRunning yea little bit narrow in forefoot but more narrow for me on the middle to forefoot area, adios pro 3 fit perfect for me.

How is this compared to Asics NB 4? Im leaning towards this shoe for its weight and versatility
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 10 дней назад
They really don't. As much as I like the NB4, its only really good as a cushioned trainer for easy running and maybe some tempo running, not much more, too much foam and too much rocker. The SL2 is much more versatile across more types of running and far more performance oreinted.

The Rise is an incredible shoe, possibly she of the year for me. Both are good but serve different purposes and runners. Though they can (and should) be used together.

@@SagasuRunning sry, I don't see dreamstrike and rise as success. But I am a fan of 1080 so.... Possibly that's why. Of any Adidas shoe will attack Pegasus and succeed, it will be more Sl2 than rise.

@DHarbajan Oh! In that case I’m going g to stay no. You will crush this shoe nearly instantly. It’s definitely a stripped down performance trainer not made for that type of weight. Of Adidas though… you may want to take a look at the Adistar BYD… that shoe just might hold up for you.

Got it for $80 in Taiwan and broke some PB when I was originally planning an easy or steady run. Could be just adrenaline of a new shoe but I love the way it feels underfeet, it was a huge pleasant surprise. It is like a Boston 12 without the upper and lacing issue. Factor in the price, it is the bargain of the year by far.
