imagine all the mind-blowing skate tricks he did in the early days that weren't even filmed. I bet he's done so many sick tricks that were only seen by the sky above. defo my favourite skater and blows my mind how advanced he was, and even today he's still ahead of the game, just in a different way
Mark Gonzales. Innovative, enthusiastic, talented improv street-skater. Most enticing skate- verve on the planet. Look at him go!! He's the abstract, jazzy (tho he sez 'blues') street- skater. Lives & skates *in the moment*. Works the terrain. Reveals & extracts maximum joy from every plateau, surface & object; moving or stationary. Pure talent & passion. His energy is inspiring & invigorating. Here's a guy who thinks on his feet.
Mark created a style to be copied for as long as he can skate and beyond he's still doing it and nobody can take away any of his great years of entertainment away really has so much skate spirit it's inspiring
LOL! Love the grind at 9:12 where he grinds up onto the higher rail. Another favorite. I don't remember if it's in this video or another one I saw recently where he ollies onto a ledge that looks about 4 feet tall and then off the other side and clips a guy on a bike. Then he say something along the lines of "I tried to go around you" and the guy was cool with it. It's like he's just skating along and a 4 foot wall appears in front of him and the natural reaction is, I'll just ride up and down it. No big deal. Love Gonz's voice also.
haven't heard Sonic Youth in decades Funny the video for 'cool thing' had Mark's proteges jason lee and maybe guy? i'd have to look it up. But they were bit parts. Its cool them using that particular song for a skate video. Now the skaters are the feature attraction and the song gets to compliment the skating.
I’d give anything for The Gonz to have 1 session where his goal is to rip and a love letter to the million+ who he inspired via his style and flow.. Dude had one of the sweetest Tre Flips and dope ass ankles like Dude said...... I think he goofs to avoid being judged on his skill....but he should know that It would similar to a 90 year old Elvis singing..
There are a couple of skate parks around where i live. Man i wish i had those growing up! Most of the kids ride scooters which i find totally ridiculous. None of them are good at all. We would be shredding it back in the day!!!! I wish i had a board and could skate it secretly.
Rodney is the innovator when it came to flatland, flip tricks, etc. Gonz is the innovator when it came to curbs, ledges, handrails, etc. Either him or Natas was the first to boardslide a handrail. When I first got into skating in ‘86, after skating for half a year or so and finding out there were pros and it was like a whole sport, at that time no one had boardslid a handrail. By ‘87 either Gonz or Natas had done it.
A grown man threw his shoe in the air then talked to it,got dressed in a fencing outfit, filmed someone with his laptop, did some roller skating, rode a bike, skated in an art gallery, barked at some dogs, nearly got ran over, what a fuckin genius.Emperors new skater anyone?
This must be the only Mark Gonzalez video you've ever seen then if you think like this. He was a pioneer Street skater in the 80s, 90s & beyond (one of the first people to start skating handrails in the 80s for example). He left Vision and started Blind skateboards (blind being the antithesis of vision). Blind - 'video days' was a milestone in skate vids at the time of its release in '91 (including his section in it). As well as simply being a great skateboarder he often skates outside the box, in interesting ways, which reflects his eccentric personality; like those quirks you listed when you were trying to take the piss out of the guy
