Nepal lost 1/3 land to British after treaty. But British never directly or indirectly ruled nepal. In those days British desperately wanted route through Nepal to trade with Tibet and China and Nepal had moderate climate as that of Britain and lots of timber but catholics were not allowed to enter Kathmandu. Rana primeministers of Nepal were autocratic but were foresighted. Most of Indians need to learn history of neighbours as well before mentioning them.
India always fails to accept and respect the independent country identity of Nepal in every field, which is the root cause of the problem between the two countries. Nepal opposes all countries that want to keep her in their grip.

NEPAL never offered itself to be part of India. I don't know why so many of my Indian friends believe this. This is not true at all. For most of the time of existence, the major focus for Nepal has been to remain Independent. Infact Nepal has always been cautious of India after it took Sikkim away. India also controls Bhutan. Nepal does not want that. the thing about nepal wanting to be part of India is just nonsense rumor. Infact it was Indira Gandhi who wanted Nepal to be integrated with India since both nations were somuch similar. But the then king Mahendra from Nepal would only agree if the newly formed country would be called Nepal" This led Nepal to construct a New Hinghway that connects China and consequently broke Indian Monopoly in Nepal Just look at all the NAKABANDHIs (economic blockades ) India has imposed on nepal.
