*For people commenting about my hands being in the way. Pay close attention to **1:50** that should be clear enough for you to figure out what I'm doing behind my humungous hands. I don't have a toilet tank cutout or transparent tank to show you any better.* It can also be the flapper (rubber piece at the bottom of the tank) that is causing the toilet to run. If you look in the tank and see bubbles coming from that area that means the flapper needs replacing or is improperly set. Make sure to find one that closely matches the original otherwise you could have problems with the new flapper.
You've got the exact same toilet bowl as mine. Why do you pull out the shaft at the bottom instead of unscrewing / screwing with a screwdriver? Does it make a difference? I use a screwdriver to adjust it, but never seem to get it right.
Many thanks! 25 year old woman here. Thanks for showing how the mechanism worked, I could clearly see how lengthening the rod would solve the problem. I was able to fix my constantly running toilet by turning the top of the screw with my fingers. I was a bit worried about breaking it if I tried to pop it out, as I have done that before on plastic parts, much to my chagrin.
See the screw slats at the top of the part he is holding? Just stick a screwdriver in there & turn it. One way is water up, the other way is water down. Don't break your plastic parts by pulling on them.
@@bloodybones63 Absolutely right. The slots in the top of the rod are there for a reason. Plus the circumference of the rod head is grooved to provide a good grip, so you can turn the rod with your fingers if a screwdriver isn’t handy. By the way, rotating the rod counterclockwise raises the water level, and vice versa.
Hi! Just wanting to say i think the toilet varies- i just fixed mine and turning clockwise raised the water level, i kept my eye on it just in case the water did raise to much and quickly rotated it counterclockwise to lower it (:
Thx. I couldn't "pop" mine out (for fear of literally breaking it) but, I was able to do the same thing by unscrewing it a bit (lefty loosey). It's a little better now I think. Fingers crossed. This was my 2nd step after replacing flapper didn't completely stop the running toilet.
Thanks soooo much … after weeks of getting on my knees to shut it off after I used it! But then I found out that Company (a Family of four) would be visiting in a couple of weeks, and that did it - could no longer wait 😅
Best video I have seen for this. Every other video I have seen has ton unscrewing things etc. this one was quick and two the point. I fixed my running toilet issue in 5 seconds. I wasted more time watching the video than it took for the fix. Thanks sir
What if I’ve adjusted the FluidMaster to increase water level in tank(not bowl) and in half an hour, the tank water level has gone down to half. The flapper that closes completely when toilet is flushed , locks into place & water begins to fill tank…it has no obstructions …I cannot see nor hear any water leakage but the tank goes down to half full, like it has leaked. What else can I do please? Thank you kindly!
I'm not a plumber but two things, one it could be the flapper still because these flappers develop bubbles sometimes. There is no quick fix for it either. Two, it could be an exhaust fan causing it too. I've found if I run my exhaust fan(s) quite a bit the water level drops by itself.
@GodlessManitoban - Thanks for answering! The flapper is barely a year old and in good shape! I adjusted the white plastic ring at the bottom of valve assembly. Tank fills up to proper level but an hour later, tank is half full. No sounds of leaking. Then a few hours later, I can hear the water filling up the tank again. I don't have an exhaust fan in my bathroom! I will end up calling a pro 🫤But I appreciate your reply, Sir! Thanks again!
I turned the little screw that that I. Duranceau was talking about, but it reached it point and won't turn clockwise anymore. Am I going to have to take that fill valve out and fix it? Does it raise by turning it (like screwing it to go up)?
@@GodlessManitoban I took what is bright orange on your toilet off (the proper way that I saw in another video b/c I was not taking it off right) and ran water through then put it back together. Worked like a charm after that. Took me some days of trial, error, ad frustration, but I finally figured out the real issue!
Hi there, First, the tank fill control unit looks like a Fluidmaster brand. I have installed and worked with several. I think that you can use a Phillip's screwdriver in the top of the piece that you call the 'rod' to adjust the water level. By the way, large hands mean a generous and kind heart. One of my best Forever Friends has large hands. Don't let them put you down for those hands . .
Yes it is a Fluidmaster and yes a screwdriver works too. But I do not own the toilet, I rent an apartment. So I was trying to avoid snapping that "rod" or whatever it is really called. Oh that's just how RU-vid is. Look for flaws in videos and comment about them. Because they weren't really looking for help to begin with.
@@GodlessManitoban Nope, not a flaw, made a helpful suggestion, because I figured out how to fix the one here, in a rental as well. But that is how RU-vid is, make a helpful suggestion and someone finds a flaw with the suggestion . . .
Question, is it common to have styrafom in the tank ? I just purchased mine and it through me off. Haven't scrapped it off but been told too. Honestly, to me it looks like that's was the Intention.
@@rd69231 I hope you didn't scrape the Styrofoam off, the purpose of it is to help reduce condensation forming on the outside and bottom of the tank in warm humid weather.
Thank you for this. My entire fill valve had to be replaced recently. Every video was saying that I needed to remove the cap and flush the seal of debris... mine was brand new and there was no debris. Thanks so much! It's not wasting water anymore.
ok good video but what if the my water level adjustment screw thing is already at the lowest it could be turned? my water still overflows into the drain pipe does any1 have a clue what could be the issue? is there an easy fix for that or does it require replacing?
You're the man! I just installed a similar AS toilet with dual flush system following your guidance. It's the same idea. Just turn the black water level counter-clock wise a few times to lower the water level or vice versa, cant be more clear.
I kept forgetting what water level my tank needs to be, what thing fixes it etc. Glad to see an easy vid as a refresher, thank you for clear instructions :)
Yes you can use a Phillips head (star) screwdriver (depending on the brand of fill valve). Counter clockwise decreases the level of water and clockwise increases the level of water. Small adjustments can be good to tell which way is which. I'd recommend being gentle with the screwdriver.
You are doing it the hard way. You can break things this way. Just use the screwdriver and turn the top of the plastic rod to the right to rise the water level or to the left to lower it.
But FIRST, make sure that little hose is not disconnected. Took me 2 minutes to realize that was the problem. So, a nice toilet water bath was in order. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much!!! The handle was so hard to press down because there was too much water in the tank, and the pressure was too much. My child was sad....I told the maintenance worker that it was hard to press, but he said that it was how the toilet was. I am glad I looked at it myself and said to myself that I am gonna figure this out....God led me to your video, and you helped me so much!! Thank you again!!
So if you do this but the water slowly creeps back up to the top of the pipe and you can hear it trickling... dora that mean you need a new flap or seal?
I'm not a plumber but if adjusting the water level causes it to flow into the pipe then it might be set to high. If setting it lower doesn't work you may need a new flush valve. If it was the flapper you'd see air bubbles coming from around the flapper.
I'm not sure, it could be the height of the fill valve is too high. I'm not a plumber and I wouldn't want to adjust that myself just in case I broke something :/
Thank you. How do you get water to drain more? in other words I want more water to go into my toilet. When you flush your toilet the water drains really low mine only goes about half way or even less.
I think its the setting on the flapper. Mine is turned to 10 if I remember correctly. Under the flapper is a cup that can be adjusted. Unless there is an aftermarket flapper in there.
Having the opposite problem here. My tank is too low and not flushing properly. I've raised the float to maximum height it'll go, but water still doesn't reach the height I need. It's even engraved in the back of the inside of the tank but I can't get it there.
