Adjustable, Homemade, DIY Kayak Camera Mount for GoPro or other Camera

This homemade, DIY kayak camera mount gets the mounting pole out of the shot. In addition, I did not want to do the standard DIY kayak camera mount on a rear since it has no flexibility as it is locked into a single perspective. The kayak camera mount for fishing I built from a Scotty Rod holder and PVC is adjustable to any angle and allows for side, rear and front shots depending on where you mount it on the kayak. Here is a link to another video from RedRoofRetriever showing a floating version: • Lady - 9 months old
Parts list:
(Comment: I recommend you cut both PVC pipe sections long and play with how it looks sitting in your yard before going final. Use the GoPro app to see what the shot will look like at different angles. Once happy, cut to length.)
34 inch 1 1/4 PVC pipe for long section
13 inch 1 1/4 PVC for short section
45-degree connector
90-degree adapter reducing 1 1/4 to 1 inch
1-inch plug to mount the camera mount
Camera mount options:
360 Mount (Generic GoPro): amzn.to/2h5VUEN
GoPro Branded 360: amzn.to/2gTp8Zp

It goes without saying that fishing is dangerous as a result of the fast water, slick rocks and other hazards that occur in random, unexpected places. You need to exercise caution, particularly in the spring when the water is high or during rapid changes in tide before you fish anywhere. You should always wear a life vest when fishing. Also, a wading staff will help you keep your balance as you walk on the shoreline or wade.

My favorite shot is with the extension pole behind you on the starboard side. Beautiful view and it would catch all the action. Thank you for sharing!

Great tip and discussion of how to use. I have an inflatable kayak and made a H-mount to hold the cam pole assembly. The H-mount ties down to the D rings on the hull. I have a PVC counter weight(filled with lead fishing weights) to offset the cam pole and aid camera stability and deformation of the inflatable hull. Thanks- this tip added to our kayak adventure trips!

Do you use the 45 connector? When I tried it just using the straight pipe, the pipe was always in the shot. Also, did you figure out a better way to reduce the wiggle?
@redladyfish4201
@redladyfish4201 7 лет назад
Kayak Hacks Fishing I attached a Scotty mount to my kayak and then bought a cheap monopod in Walmart and modified so it would fit nicely in the Scotty mount. I like it because you can extend it really long and with the Scotty mount I can change the angle of the monopod up or down and sideways. You can see me use it in one of my latest videos. There is no wiggle on this set up😁

Great concept, thank you for the video and ideas. My concern for this would be when taking down rivers or any areas of possibly capsizing. A much more stable version would be ideal, but with pvc and hitting river bottoms on rapids, this would be a wrap. Loving the different perspective from the camera though.
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 7 лет назад
My only suggestion would be to remove it from the scotty mount when approaching a risky area and securing it to the kayak along with the other gear. Good point. Thanks.

Looks great, I actually use a telescopic aluminum pole that I got from Wal-Mart, it was for washing your car windows and squeegee. I have yet to try it but I think it will work out ok.
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 7 лет назад
That will work. However, without the 45 degree connector, you will see more of the pole in your videos. Maybe there is something you can attach to the end to create the same offset.

Kayak Hacks Fishing I hear ya! Ridiculously expensive these days. I tried making a few mounts but ended up buying the Railblaza boom and added an extention to it. Does the same thing as your device only it cost 5x as much in sure haha. Multiple pivot points/camera angles. It's still an amazing mount.

Back to the drawing board for me, well, sorta. Out hunting the other day and using my Kodak Playsport camera on a selfie stick, slid into a DIY gearhead pole mount like yours. Everything works great, except I did not hook up the DIY tether to the selfie stick. Goose hunting on the river is a lot of fun, and the excitement level got the kayak a rockin back and forth.... and then it was gone. Selfie stick and camera in 7-8' water, with a strong current. Gone, didn't bother fussing. I bbought a new camera, will be in the mailbox Friday. I like this swing arm idea, and will likely design a version of this using the parts that come with the camera - Garmin Vibe Elite. The difficult part is it swings outside the kayak DIY blind I made, so I'll need to make that work w/o hanging up on stuff. Watch for my build video next week. Thanks for posting your videos, as you can see, I'm a DIY guy myself.

This looks alot like Bayport Park. I like this set up but on narrow (and busy) paddles like the Weeki Wachi this may cause problems. I definitely like the set up. Is the footage shakey because of the length of the poles? I love the composition it gives you.
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 7 лет назад
Once I changed the mount to a regular scotty mount vs the gear head adapter it smoothed out. However, you do need to paddle smoothly to minimize the shake. Ideally, I'll upgrade to a camera that has internal stabilization.

@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 7 лет назад
I use the cameras. On my Hero4, I use a DIY windscreen I sewed around a SONY ECMCS3 mic. I used the furry material you can buy as the screen. On the Session, nothing and the polarizing filter actually makes it worse. You bring up a good point. When pulling the audio using only the Session, I should have used my handheld recorder with a windscreen. Trying to edit the wind sound in post production never works as this video shows. However, in the rest of the video I only used the Hero4 w/windscreen audio track and that turned out pretty well on a pretty windy day. I also use lavalier mics with commercially sold, cheap wind filters - to see how well they work, check out my GoPro playlist.
@TheRealAnthonyLawson

looks great but how often are you cleaning water off your camera?
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 6 лет назад
Actually, not bad at all. Pivot the camera to the rear when not using it to protect it from spray by either turning the long arm to the rear or just spinning the camera. Even then, unless the weather is throwing up spray, I have not had an issue. There may be a spot or two on the lens from paddle splash every once in a while.

Here is a brief synopsis of a build I did you are welcome to use anything here as if not for you I probably wouldn’t have accomplished it. Remove bottom of monopod using a vice grip carefully so to not damage tubing epoxied in a 1/4” -20 x13/16 expansion nut this was same thread at toilet bolt. Took pvc cap sanded down bottom to make it flat drilled hole in it inserted toilet bolt that I but a single layer of Teflon plumbing tape on it to make getting excess epoxy off. Used a 1/4 x20 nut on toilet bolt I left about 1/2” of bolt sticking out bottom of cap the nut I screwed in all the way. Put epoxy in cap just enough to cover nut. I used a threaded cap so the epoxy could have something to hold it in better. After letting epoxy cure for 2 hours it was no longer sticky to the touch I unscrewed everything cleaned off the Teflon tape using a dental pic( I use it for gun cleaning) My total cost for making an approximately 6’+ GoPro camera mount for my Big Rig was code to $50 about 1/2 the price of the ready made units. I may a shorter version also using schedule 40 pipe. A lot of what I built was learned by watching your videos. Yes, you can lock a Scotty down. With this, I let it "float" just above the point where you could push it down into a permanent position. I used these parts - the mount - amzn.to/3eUxBJh and any of the Scotty rod holders will work to hold the PVC - amzn.to/3f1RJJT

With the right angle, the pipe stays out of the side shots. If I think of it, I can push the pole all the way to the rear and it is pretty much hidden by my body/seat. But, you are correct if you are not careful in how you record the video.... something I need to get better at.

Kayak Hacks Fishing As long as we enjoy of our hobbies, nothing else matters :-) Personally, I love shooting photos and videos for my own purposes and roaming in woods, but sometimes it's quite hard to combine these two.
