Before my epic cross country ride from NYC to Portland I decided to check out my chain. Never too late, right? Adjusting the chain on a 2006 Ducati Monster 620.

Very nice bike, I always lubricate my chain after ride when its still warm, so lubricate sticks better. Let it dry so after next ride I don't have much stuff to clean.

Makes sense. I usually do to. Definitely did not in this savage case.

hi I also have 620 monster I'm pretty sure when adjusting the chain you're meant to sit on the bike off stands and then get someone else if your arms arnt long enough to to check the chain tension when it's under your weight as the chain becomes taught under the bike and rider weight . At that point you're looking for about an inch play in the middle. Anymore its too loose any less is too tight.. and if the chain is old it will be stretched in certain areas so it will be tighter in certain areas and looser in other areas. So by checking it all around you can see if it it needs changing because of being too stretched. This is how I have been told to do it I could be wrong.

That is absolutely correct. I rode the bike a few hours prior to this..... but should have rode around a block a few times right before.

I've seen (on youtube, I should add) cases where those alignment marks on the swingarms aren't square to each other.

Bike must stay on his own side stand for chain adjustment. For little owerweight people like me chain must be little loose ;)

@@ducatinyc For reference: Page 95 Workshop Manual 620. I drive my chain little loose, because I'm 90 kg and when I sit down on bike chain screams over 40 km/h :)))

Just curious - how often do you clean and lube your chain?
@ducatinyc
@ducatinyc 7 лет назад
Every 300 miles or so. It's been snowy/rainy/dirty mess on these winter streets so as often as I remember.
@rudx1963
@rudx1963 7 лет назад
Quick tip: Heat the chain (of course, riding!), Lubricate it every 800 km (do not be a lot of lubricant on the tire!), Ride on a motorcycle immediately after lubricating the chain, and after the first run, remove excess lubricant from the chain.

@@ducatinyc thanks for the reply! In my research to get that answer I’m starting to see there is a special tool you “should” use to not mess up the nut. Fun fun

So, funny thing. I got the 30mm socket and went to tighten my chain. It’s got a nut on the right side only. The left side doesn’t have a nut. It kinda looks like if you were to look into a socket. A hole with the ridges on it. I can see right out the other side through the axle bolt. Also noticing my monster says on the sticker on the swing arm to check the slack on the side stand.
@tonybro70

What's the factory torque setting on those 30mm?
@ducatinyc
@ducatinyc 3 года назад
Hmmm good question, it should say it in the manual :)
@karlssonh3521

It's 83Nm±5% with greased threads on my M695 08, just a M25x1.25 here tho. So, somewhere around there, rather a little more than too little, don't overdo it though... The alignment bracket will rotate with the nut. Also, the markings on the swingarm (at least on my Monster) are trash, way off when measuring from shaft of the swing to the nuts
