Adjusting The Steering Brakes and Removing Blade Valve Spool

It is time to adjust the steering brakes. Pretty straight forward. The operator's manual does a good job of explaining the procedure.
My blade would angle on its own occasionally and I had an angle cylinder leaking. I repaired the leaking cylinder but that did not help. The blade also would drop on its own, slowly, but would drop. I decided to have the valve spool rebuilt, which was leaking anyway, but this did not stop the blade from angle movement, nor did it completely stop the blade from dropping but it helped.

Drum brakes in older vehicles worked the same way. When you applied the brakes in reverse, the shoes shifted against a tensioning dog that turned a cog and lengthened the distance between the shoes. That moved them closer to the drum. The result was that the same brake pedal travel applied more pressure through the shoes onto the drum… I didn’t explain it well but… if you ever do a brake job on one of them it’s simplicity is apparent! My guess is that those Cat brakes were modeled after the automotive brakes if their day… Interesting!

No that was a good explanation. I have a 1964 Ford Galaxy 500 that is like that. I hope you and your family have a happy Thanksgiving. Don’t work your grandson too hard.

I replaced the electronic dash with manual gauges and in doing so I found the hour meter unplugged. It had 5000 hrs on meter. I’m thinking 7-8000 total.

Brakes! Who needs them? I guess you might need them from time to time on that plane though. Enjoyed the video...

Don’t use them much on the dozer. The plane is a must have though! Thanks!!

How good does that 4900 pull that dozer? Pretty hilly where I'm at looking to get a truck

If it’s hilly I would look at other options. 1st thru 3rd pretty strong, 4th thru 6th is weak. The Dt466 can be turned up and that may do the trick. I haven’t done that to mine but considering it.
