From the Film Australia Collection. Made by Film Australia 1992. Directed by Alec Morgan. For much of the 20th century, successive Australian governments pursued a policy of deporting and barring entry to any race of people they considered undesirable. This was known as the White Australia policy. Admission Impossible is the true story of the behind-the-scenes political forces and the propaganda campaigns that attempted to populate Australia with “pure white” migrants.

My background is Italian. I have spent my life wondering what was wrong. Now I know. As a child, I wasn't wanted here. My colouring was all wrong. My father was strict because he knew we were not wanted here. I understand. I am 63 years old and I finally understand. It wasn't me, all along.

My great great great grandfather was born in Rome in 1799 and migrated with his son from the Italian speaking canton of Switzerland arriving in Melbourne in 1854. Yet for all this length of time in Australia, an Australian army officer made a derogatory comment to my uncle when he was a child during WW2 about his name ( Fritz) when they visited the family farm at John's River just north of Taree.

It's disappointing to see how much this documentary misrepresents how the White Australia policy came to be dismantled. It states Harold Holt was a fervent supporter of the policy, which is totally false - Holt was allowing Asians into the country as early as 1950, and he was widely recognised as more liberal than Calwell. It states Australia was forced into the Colombo Plan to appease its Asian nations, when in fact Australian foreign minister Percy Spender was the driving force behind the Colombo Plan. It attributes the Holt Government's decision to liberalise the White Australia policy to pressure from students and President Lyndon Johnson. In fact cabinet records show this decision was being contemplated in the early 1960s. The liberalisation occurred in March 1966, two months after Holt took office and several months before Johnson visited Australia. The documentary reverses this timeline. It states the Holt Government faced widespread Vietnam War protests, which is also false. In fact the government won a record majority on a pro-war platform in December 1966. It was not until 1969/1970 that the mass protests began.

We were taught at school that the Colombo plan was to educate Asians for the benefit of their own countries, not Australia. But many of the people who were educated under the Colombo plan, wanted to stay into Australia. Being educated at the expense of the Australian taxpayer wasn't enough, and they didn't want to serve their own countries, as the Colombo plan intended.

@pete smyth Yes, every one of the Indian students in the class that I taught, wanted work rights and permanent residency. University personnel are financing their salaries by selling off work rights and a path to permanent residency to foreigners. Australia's infrastructure and our institutions are our heritage. We must insist that our governments stop giving our birthright away to people from cultures that gave the world FGM. honour killings, foot-binding, the caste system, suttee and child marriage.

Exactly. But instead we choose to increase the working class; Bring up class-warfare with cheap foreign labour. Increase ethnic tensions, and destroy social cohesion amongst communities as a result of increased urbanisation and pure cultural/ethnic divide. As our population growth goes through the roof with 1,000,000 migrants per year. growing up in the 60's , I was torn between the country I was born in (Australia) and the country my parents were born in (Italy). Australians didn’t understand us when we spoke in Italian. Often, even in crowds my I could hear other Italians rubbishing Australians. It used to upset me because I was Australian, and I took it personally. Then when Aussies rubbished Italians, it used to upset me too , because .... well I was kind of Italian too. If we are honest, it went both ways and it still happens even within Italians today. My brother in law is from the North, we are from the south. When they argue, she calls him derogatory northern names and he calls her ‘Terroni' which means peasant southerner. We are racist to each other in italy. The north hate the south and vice versa ! Please stop the self-flagellation and accept that Aussies were actually very good to us. All my mates were Aussies. Sure sometimes they called me a Wog and I called then a convict, but that was generally when we were angry with each other. Otherwise we got along fine. I know of no Italian that didn’t find a job or get ahead in Australia. However I know of many Italian relatives in Italy from the south that cant get jobs in ITALY !!! I’m tired of all this knocking of our great country and great people.

Who says that?!? Australia was founded on racist principles. The colonies couldn’t agree on a union, but they all agreed to form a nation with a single immigration policy to keep the Chinese out (the yellow peril). The very first bill passed by the Australian Federal Parliament was the Immigration Restriction Bill, which was known informally as the “White Australia Policy “. Our first Prime Minister said that the IRB was the “most important piece of legislation that our country would ever create”.

What are you calling racism? How is it worse than discrimination on the basis of gender or age? The only reason that we think that it is bad to discriminate on the basis of race is that none of us can choose our race or change it. Discrimination on the basis of race is unfair, but it is no more evil than discriminating on the basis of gender or age. We have no obligation to share what we have built with any one, and if we choose to share our inheritance, then we have no obligation to be fair when choosing the beneficiaries of our generosity.

The only reason that we think that it is bad to discriminate on the basis of race is that none of us can choose our race or change it. Racism is unfair, but it is no worse than sexism or ageism. Unlike modern migrants, the first British settlers in Australia didn't come to get a share of the wealth built by another country's people. They started from scratch. They introduced the western industrial economy to Australia and built the infrastructure and Australia's institutions: the welfare, education, health care and political systems. The early migrants who did the hard yards of establishing a nation are entitled to have the fruits of their labour go to their own descendants, not to the latecomers who weren't interested in Australia until the British made it rich. Australians have absolutely no obligation to share our country with any foreigner and if we share our inheritance with foreigners, we have no obligation to be fair in choosing which ones.

It's not racism when Israel does it?, Japan?, China?, Gulf States?, Africa? If Australian's from northern Europe built a civilisation and culture based on western values why should they be condemned for protecting it from other cultures that do not wish to assimilate. @Endeavour If another nation with the means to invade Australia camee and enforced their perception of civilisation on to Australia today, would you respect their philosophy for doing so? For example if China colonised the current Australia and brought its culture and heritage over, would you say "this is not an invasion? This is simply the birth of a nation based on another country's perception of civilisation" You certainly wouldn't. You'd feel like you're having not only your country but also your culture and identity robbed from you. I know this because these arguments are ones that are used even today to argue for stronger borders: "We don't want our country to be overrun by Chinese/Indian/Arabs etc. In the same way, the indegenous peoples of Australia well equally robbed of their culture and identity. They did not see the invasion as a cultural renaissance for Australia, they saw it as a forced violent and inhuman overhaul. I think the key to reconciling nationalism or white supremacy in Australia with the suffering of the indigenous and migrants is to stop antagonising one another and discuss a future Australia based on empathy and understanding. The understanding that the fears of nationalists and conservatives may be real and the understanding that refugees and migrants come to Australia not to ruin the country but to contribute to it. I think it's time to stop arguing and resorting to personal or racial insults and actually achieve some social change in this great country.

The Aborigines who were living in Australia in 1788, were the ultimate winners of millennia of low level warfare. They or their ancestors gained their occupancy by killing other Aborigines. Modern Aborigines have a longer life expectancy at birth than did their ancestors, living the hunter gatherer lifestyle. No one has been able to show that, when the whites arrived, there were any more than a million Aborigines spread over the whole continent after having Australia all to themselves for 40, 000 years. Clearly, their children weren't surviving to adulthood, or they were being periodically being decimated by drought, or they were killing each other off. We have eyewitness accounts of the violence of Aborigines against other Aborigines.

I have been studying the White Australian policy, assimilation policy, protectionist policy et cetera in Australia this is the first time I have seen footage the white Australian policy in action seeing its full implications, first time seeing wars impact on immigration and shaping Australian character, it is the first time I realised America was actually less racist than Australia in 1960, it is the first time I realised fully how much Australians were against multiculturalism at the time. This is the first time I have noticed the word Aryan used in Australian policy among many other revelations. This is truly enlightening documentary that should be showed in schools to make students realise just how racist Australia can be, so they realise how much further we need to go in making Australia a truly multicultural nation, with equal representation for all. As an Australian I am ashamed of the past racism and hopeful for the future.

A good thing too, because its main proponent, Isaac Steinberg, was a contemptible human being (I use the term loosely) who presided over the deaths of thousands as People's Commissar of "Justice" under Lenin and who fled Russia when he was personally threatened.
