Keith and Tyler designed and built our beautiful 2 bed/2bath Adobe home in El Prado, New Mexico in 2017. We had so much fun with this project, fascinated by this method of construction, use of solar with how the home was set on the lot and the step to step operation of Keith and Tyler and their long standing amazing crew!Our house is so comfortable, year round with little to no maintenance. We enjoy cool summers with only fan use, warm winters and views every day of the surrounding mountains. Very grateful we chose Keith and Tyler and Adobe Home Construction.

This is one of the best videos ever on how an Adobe home is made. The double insulation idea of adding foam insulation for improving thermal quality is the proper way to do it. I've watched this video many times!!!!

New Mexico is still my favorite state. We lived in SF as kids. When our family moved to Phoenix my dad eventually bought a big older home that needed a full renovation. It was an old home built of masonry blocks. My dad hire three brothers fro SF to come up and remodel the home. The interior walls were finished with diamond plaster. They added some vigas to the home too. Those guys were there on that job for over 6 months. The results were stunning. Anyhow, it was fun watching your fantastic video

The older style ones are mainly built of just adobe with plaster over it on a stone foundation I believe. I think they overcomplicated it a little. You don't really need all that mesh and insulation. The adobe itself is a very good insulator already, and the mesh just adds a bit of strength to the plaster.

I love it all except for the foam. Don't really see the point of adding foam insulation. Adobe is it's own insulation. One of it's huge advantages. Also don't think the mesh is really necessary, and its gonna make it harder to reuse the plaster if it ever needs redoing. Can save a good bit of money not including them as well. Very lovely house though.
@meadmaker4525
@meadmaker4525 2 года назад
The foam isn't insulation, it's a thermal brake, like he said in the video. The adobe itself is the thermal mass, but using the foam slows the temperature fluctuation process, making the adobe more efficient year round. Also, the wire mesh and fiberglass sheeting add significant structural component to the finished stucco, ensuring it will last significantly longer without the need for redo or touching up. These guys know exactly what they're doing.

Adobe has zero insulation property. It has an ability to delay heat transfer. For every inch of earth, heat transfer is delayed by an hour. Mesh is necessary in preventing earthquake damage. It has a dual use in being a good base for applying stucco. However, in this case the inside of the mesh cage was not tied to the outside. Additionally, the stucco they used was concrete based and can not be reused.

I wonder what the cost differential is between building an adobe home like this versus using more modern materials (wood, cinder block, drywall, etc)? Cheaper? More expensive? I've heard horror stories from people in Marfa, Texas whose corrupt politicians have decided to attack owners of homes made with adobe with gross over-valuation and skyrocketing property taxes, making it almost impossible for people to build or live in adobe homes there, even if they've been there for generations. Hope nothing like this is going on in New Mexico.
@b1gbuni
@b1gbuni 3 года назад
I believe the materials themselves.. mostly adobe is more affordable, but the labor makes it more expensive. I heard about Marfa. I hope that doesn't happen in NM. I live in a 100+ year old large, territorial adobe and the taxes would ruin us.

Definitely cheaper overall as a state. Really santa fe is the only place you might find 15 million dollar houses. Otherwise the best houses in albuquerque are more 5 to 10 million at the very high end so I think mainly santa fe commands that 20 million dollar range but still most of santa fe is just like 1 to 2 million. 20 million would be a very nice estate even in santa fe.

Using foam insulation board and a concrete based stucco coating eliminates the natural breathability of adobe. Also reduces the ability of adobe to act as a natural heat sink. For every inch of earth, heat transfer is delayed by an hour. Using foam insulation stops this natural process. Using concrete stucco is a cause of "rising damp". I guess it's fine in the dry southwest. In wetter parts of the world this may cause mold. The water proofing ability of concrete keeps water out, but it also keep water vapor IN. Using chicken wire for stucco coat inside and out while not tying it together for earthquake resistance is just crazy. Taos is not immune to earthquakes. The bond beam prevents wall collapse in earthquakes and is code. But why not go the extra inch and tie the inside to the outside? Using foam board and concrete based stucco on the exterior "saves money" and protects the adobe bricks from water damage. So I see the reasoning. It's wrong. But I see it. Damn this is inauthentic and unnatural.

@efredric87
@efredric87 Год назад
@@JohnCunninghamTeam Richard does not sound like an authority on the matter. I would recommend you (and Richard) familiarize yourself with the New Mexico Earthen Building Code. It will give you a better sense of why the builders in this video built this the way they did. The standard 2" of EPS foam, as prescribed in the code, does not constitute a vapor barrier. While not traditional, adobe absolutely performs better with insulation -- and, obviously, the adobe still acts as a natural heat sink, because presumably you are heating the inside of your house. Especially in cold climates like Taos, an un-insulated north facing adobe wall will get cold and STAY cold all winter long -- not what you want. I really appreciated this video. Every builder does things a little differently, and has to weigh a thousand considerations -- what is best for the building, what is possible on the site, the homeowners' wants and needs, the budget, the building crew's skills, equipment, and time, etc. etc. etc., while also abiding local building codes. Most of all, I'm just happy that the clients chose to build a real adobe house, and not a frame construction counterfeit.
@richardleau
@richardleau Год назад
@@efredric87 I've read the New Mexico code. Thanks. As well as US building code. As well as half a dozen international building codes that apply to earthen construction. So you can fuck right off with your snide comment. Two inches of foam is absolutely a vapor barrier. You're a moron if you think two inches of foam isn't a vapor barrier. I didn't say it wasn't allowed by code. I said that it is inauthentic looking and stopped the natural breathability of earthen construction. Which it absolutely does.
