Guyer-Zeller, who was born on May 1, 1839, in Bäretswil, Switzerland, was the son of a textile exporter in Zürich and the owner of a spinning mill. He became the company's leader after his father passed away. At Zürich's Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, he pursued his education.
Later, he focused on the construction of railroads in Switzerland, which had grown to be a lucrative industry. Among other things, he was elected president of the Northeastern Railway (NOB) in Switzerland. Guyer-Zeller was also the founder of the Uerikon-Bauma Railway (UeBB) and the Jungfrau Railway (JB). His Bank Guyerzeller AG, which HSBC fully acquired in 2004, was established in 1894 in order to fund the JB.
Guyer-Zeller, then 59 years old, passed away due to a cardiac arrest on 3 April 1899.
