Hi everybody, this is Mattias - one of the directors of the film. A lot of people are asking about the biological mother in the comments, so I thought I'd just answer that here. Unfortunately all the clues about her that we had, like her name and address, lead us nowhere. After exhausting a lot of energy following up on these clues, we had to let it go. We weren't able to find out anything about her in the end. Other comments are asking for an update on what happened after the filming was done. Well, the families stayed in contact, and do so even until today. Emilio ended up moving back to Sweden to be near his family. And he's still a devoted Iron Maiden fan I hear.
@filipino_nomad
@filipino_nomad Год назад
Oh, he moved back. I thought that he changed his name as an indication that he was going to live, marry, have kids and grow old as a Colombian. But having that choice and ability to go back and forth between two “worlds” is such a privilege.

I agree, the uncle was concerned about the land which Emilio would be entitled to from the grandmother. He would get part of his fathers shared, even tho he was adopted. It seems there’s acres of land. If he got 1 acre, he could build a summer house at least and live there part of the time to get to know his extended family. Emilio was so happy to know them, and vise versa, but they should give him something if they have a lot of land.

Come on! Put in Lazaro's (Emilio's biological uncle) shoes for a second, he is an old poor farmer and one day on his way back home, he finds a bunch o strangers with cameras standing at his front door with one of them claiming to be his deceased brother's son. It's not unrealistic to think that "nephew" he did not even know that existed until that moment, had suddenly shown up after his brother passed away to claim any material property. Also, notice that people do not explain the situation to Lazaro well until very later in the conversation so the whole time Lazaro is thinking that Emilio was actually raised by his brother and it is not until later when he makes the comment that Emilio's father used to drink a lot and that Emilio must have known that that everybody finally explains to him Emilio's adoption story and that is when finally everything makes sense to him.

Well, that's the same situation that occurs with English: an American speaks different than a British or an Australian even when all of they speak the same language. Same thing occurs in Spanish, each country has its own accent, expressions, slangs and so on but still we all speak the same language so even when a Colombian speaks different than a Spaniard, Mexican or Argentinian, we are still able to understand each other.
@jaycorwin1625
@jaycorwin1625 Год назад
Yes I know. I've been a translator and interpreter and a lecturer and have been around both languages my entire life. My comment was more to do with the particulars of the people in the video who are from highlands Colombia and their expressions, like saying "de pronto" to mean "maybe"
@manuelcorrea2365
@manuelcorrea2365 Год назад
@@jaycorwin1625 Hahahaha, I am Colombian myself from Bogota and I also use _"de pronto"_ a lot in my every day life to mean _"maybe"_ instead of other expressions like _"quizás"_ or _"tal vez"_ as it sounds way more natural to me. It is now with your comment that I realize that _"de pronto"_ may be a particularity from Colombia and not the default in other Spanish speaking countries... 😄
@jaycorwin1625
@jaycorwin1625 Год назад
@@manuelcorrea2365 It's more normal to hear "a lo mejor" in some places. I've heard Uruguayans say "de repente" to mean "maybe" and that also sounds a little unusual to my ear. Of course it's all Spanish and the differences can be amusing and interesting. I think English has become more uniform between English-speaking countries because of the internet, but I don't know if that is the case yet with Spanish. Even the rhythm of highlands Colombian Spanish is a distinctive. I wonder if some of the intonation is a remnant of the Muiska language. It's very different from the paisa accent I've heard from people from Medellín, which has a different sort of rhythm to it, and sounds very beautiful in a particular way.

As an International adoptee to a white adoptive family & community, I understand Emilio's need to find his birth family. Although it might have felt like a rejection to his adoptive parents, they really did try overcome that & tried to support his search. Not knowing who you are & where you come from makes it difficult for some people to feel deeply connected to others. To be able to see family that you are biologically connected to lessens that angsty feeling of not ever feeling "right" in your life. People forget that adoption involves a lot of trauma and just because your new life is better, the effects of trauma remain. It is often overlooked by the adoptive family because they feel a better life equals out the trauma but it doesn't. We lost our identity, our language, culture, history, & the most painful loss, our parents. The loss of our birth mother is another level of loss because we were at one time an integral part of her. I'm so happy that Emilio found his birth family & wish him and both of families the best.

I am rasied in a foster parents home since birth (1972), and I see them as my real family, father and mother, I also have a biological family too (where I am born, they are from Finland but living in Sweden since 1964) , good contact with the siblings from there, and also some years ago found out a new DNA-father from a third family.. The family is only bigger, but still my foster family is 1st..

I think empathy is important for his father , his uncle was right who has been the father here? That is not to say his biological father is denied now does it. We are not all experts hence open adoption seems to work better. I'm glad his found his family connections. God bless him

@@patriciatehaate236 it was the wording by the uncle, first asking if Emilio came for the inheritance (I've been asked that after finding bio family, what a joke) and saying that about his adoptive father so emphatically was just hurtful and not necessary. Emilio's bio family knew nothing about either of them until they showed up at the uncle's door. They have no idea what it was like for Emilio to grow up in that situation. People like to assume that adoption is all wonderful and good, when in fact it's hell for many of my #cribmates and they commit suicide at 4x the rate of the general population. 💔💔

Emilio, your father is a great man. You can see how all this is worrying + affecting him emotionally. To him, you are not his adopted son but HIS SON. He was trying so hard to keep it inside but still, the uncertainty, worry and you changing your surname must have affected him. Like what you uncle said to you. Bengt is your father. Some fathers though biological are not the fathers who shouldered those responsibilities or shaped their childrens' lives. Happy that you have found your roots and now have 2 families. Cherish them.

I was thinking the same. Stress and sorrow can really shorten a person’s life span. I’m sure it’s unintentional, but he’s damaging the only father he is truly going to have.
@daughteroftheking4775
@daughteroftheking4775 Год назад
@@mariaharrington8708 Like Emilio said - he wanted to know who he looked like - it's normal - he looks nothing like his adoptive parents and was probably confronted with that question every day in Europe and to add insult to injury - he couldn't explain because he was denied knowledge of his cultural and familial identity. Emilio's adoptive parents dumped the responsibility on him to discover his cultural and familial roots, hence why he changed his name without explanation and rightfully so. Whatever the story of his natural family - he fitted into Colombia right away - at last he was accepted. Probably for the first time in his life, Emilio wasn't ridiculed. He didn't need to explain who he was or apologise for his existence. Emilio's natural family accepted him and his adoptive father as a precious part of their family - this is what Emilio's adoptive parents should have done many years before - which was to embrace Emilio's natural family - knowing that Emilio suffered racist abuse in Sweden. Emilio may never know the full circumstances of why he was given up for adoption or whether his natural parents lived and died of a broken heart in not having contact with him. Emilio should have been allowed contact with his birth family while he was growing up - this is called an 'open' adoption and healthier for the adoptee. No matter how attached, adoptive parents must understand that adoptive children may be curious about and want to connect with their natural family. Moving Emilio to another continent and removing access to his natural family didn't remove him from his Colombian ancestral heritage or his need to know his natural family - in fact, it embedded it. Latinos are warm and welcoming by nature. So glad he got to see a picture of his Papa 🙏❤

It's quite disgusting how the son is so quick to leave his true family for those strangers who are only related to him by blood of the sperm donor.

Of all of the children I looked exactly like my mom.. some family cried when they saw me. I have to really commend the father for his love and devotion to his son. It appeared very painful for him, but he went to Columbia anyway to support his son. Beautiful story.

Me alegró mucho leer ésta historia!

Pun intended. God Bless every one of them. Also, everyone who helped them go in the right direction. I full expected the search to end in disappointment. For an adoption story to end like this is rare. Congratulations to all.
