Chester Zoo's Bornean Orangutan baby Myrtle is resting on mom and getting
loads of hugs.
They are a truly wonderful Bornean Orangutan family.
Update video from May 2024
Sarikei is an experienced mother orangutan who has had previous offspring including her son Tombol who lives with her and the rest of the Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of this new baby orangutan very special indeed
Congratulations to Chester Zoo on the birth of the new baby orangutan from @apetracker

Yes she was worn out! She is so active during the day on every visit. It is amazing now how high she can climb, there is no stopping her! Her siblings Tombol and Dot are enjoying playing with her more as she is growing up, there are lots of wonderful moments of these interactions coming up on the channel ! Thanks for your continued support and for your wonderful comments, have a lovely day ! 🦧🥰

It's interesting, you can see how Sarikei will turn her baby upside down and 'handle' her a little. I've no doubt she knows how to treat her baby - better than I would know! But people seem to only comment on this when looking with a more critical eye like on the videos of Jingga and Jarang

It would be absolutely heartbreaking if these wonderful primates were lost in the wild. It's always, always humans who are responsible for the near extinction of so many wonderful creatures. When will we learn? 😢

Zoos like Chester are working closely with conservationists around the world, to help restore their habitats and educate people on the species plight, as they face the ever increasing possibility of extinction With this hard work and more people being aware of the problems, hopefully one day all great apes will be safe and thrive in the wild Thank you for your insightful comments and support 🦧🥰

Sarikei seems to have a 'favoured location'. One wonders if, in their native habitats whether they have certain spots where they like to frequent.
@bajscast
@bajscast Месяц назад
Orangutans in the wild are mostly nomadic, but when they can (because of resource prominence) they will stick in an area for as long as possible though I don't know if they specifically like to hang out in a certain tree, hah
@petermoody6147
@petermoody6147 Месяц назад
To: @bajscast - Ha, ha! Yes,, possibly a favourite tree. That is along the lines I am thinking. Something like that may, in part, come from a sense of comfort and security. If so, how endemic could it be in the natural world?
@bajscast
@bajscast Месяц назад
@@petermoody6147 It's an interesting thing to think about, for sure. I believe there have been cases of orangutans from jungle schools with the skills to survive in the wild, escaping sessions and then returning months, or even years later. Obviously an orangutan capable of that has learned their lessons, even if it must be a big fright for their tutors! In these cases, I imagine they do value the comfort of familiarity - in the wild orangutans are so conflict averse presumably because they like to avoid as many difficulties as possible. However, one thing we can observe between both captivity and the wild - orangutans love sacks in zoos, as you can see in this video. This is related to their wild behaviour of collecting leaves that are suitably sized to protect themselves from the rain. And in situations when they can, they'll take sacks or similar things from human settlements to use more permanently. As you see in some videos from chester zoo, most of the orangutans have a favourite blanket/sack they like to take with them - even while climbing!
@ApeTracker1
@ApeTracker1 Месяц назад
Chester zoo give the orangutans sacks as opposed to soft cotton blankets, like at some other zoos, presumably to replicate a more natural feel They certainly love them and carry them everywhere, making beds with them, using them as protection from the elements, and they also make swings and hammocks with them! most of the minor skirmishes are over possession of the sacks

Sarikei does seem to have a preferred spot, she can be seen most often resting here. She has moved to a more central position under a cargo net lately, as Myrtle is actively climbing. She sits under it supervising Myrtle as she climbs up the netting and interacts with her siblings. Leia, Dot, Tombol and Willie don't seem to have obvious preferred locations and move around the enclosure, they kept a greater distance from Sarikei when Myrtle was younger, this seems to have changed as Myrtle has become increasingly active and independent, as now the whole family can often be observed together.
@rosiepena8917
@rosiepena8917 Месяц назад
Mom Sarikei always looks so bored in that concrete enclosure. She also never seems to interact with her older toddler child. 😢
@ApeTracker1
@ApeTracker1 Месяц назад
She does interact with her older son Tombol, but as would be the case in the wild, her priorities are her baby, who is totally reliant on her for food and transport. Orangutans encourage older offspring to be more independent and males are naturally solitary as they mature. The concrete enclosure may not be aesthetically attractive to humans, but it was designed specifically with research and conservationists to meet their needs, in fact it is the largest facility in Europe. They have a larger outdoor area to freely use throughout the day, however they seem to prefer the indoor areas as they choose to be in here most of the time Thanks for watching
@bajscast
@bajscast Месяц назад
@@ApeTracker1 Yep, I can vouch for this - I've been to this zoo and they have a lovely outdoor area and lots of places to hide from humans if they ever feel like it. But while they can "look" bored, they don't express themselves the way humans do. We all know about how chimps see smiling as aggression, the same applies in different ways to most animals. It's good to empathise with these lovely animals but also to understand that you can't gauge their emotions simply from looking at them and connecting their human-like faces to human expressions
