There can be poetry in any project; the image, the required work and the process of conservation. This painting of a few poor souls adrift, heavily damaged and worse for wear perfectly mirrors this moment in the studio where motivation is waning, the impetus to focus and dive into complicated projects just isn't there and a general malaise has settled. So how does one find a way to drum up energy and interest, how does one chart a course home... well, you'll just have to watch to find out.

As Julian works, I imagine Heaven, filled with the artists whose paintings he has conserved. I imagine Julian, one day, in the very distant future (after a long and joyful life lived) being greeted by those artists upon his arrival. To happy tears, firm handshakes, gentle pats on his back and good natured laughter - Julian hears a chorus of “Well done. Well done. Well done.”
@Palitato

I paint myself (i wouldn't ever hold myself up against the masters or anything, obvs) and I would absolutely adore it if I knew someone like Julian was taking care of my work in the future. Now, I don't think any of it is really worth enough to ever GET conserved (not many calls for a painting of a Suchomimus' head...) but if it were, I'd be happy to see it treated like this.

I'm probably the only human alive who actually enjoys painting feet. Feet have all kinds of interesting shapes. If you start with a basic construction with a curved box it's not so bad. You just need to know how to turn that box around the place and remember, the bow has a curve because your foot (even flat feet, just to less of an extent) has an arch.

possibly bought by someone who did care, eventually (possibly a few generations later) passed on to someone who didn't care, kept by people who didn't care for a while (again, possibly a few generations) until it is eventually passed on to someone who does care and brings it to Julian. alternatively, the owners all did care but didn't notice the discoloring for such a long time because it happened gradually, eventually the painting was damaged in a move/during an accident/whatever and kept in storage for a while before someone remembered or rediscovered it and decided to bring it to Julian.

A person claiming to be the owner (Grew K) commented on Schooner Girl's comment to say that, "Well I got my notification that there was a new video and lo and behold there was my painting. I sat down and watched with the kids. It was absolutely emotional watching the varnish come off and the sea roar to life. I got the painting for the faces of the two Mariners. Even with the varnish and the terrible condition the canvas was in I had to have it. It just spoke to me. I am shocked and pretty darn excited!" So based on that and their other comments in the thread they didn't know it was done yet. But Covid times aren't really the best to try filming reactions of owners, esp. if they're living well outside of Chicago.
